So the E-M5 Mkiii is still a pre-order, but this is a much more palatable price than the $1899 RRP. There are better value cameras out there at this price (Like the Panasonic G9 deal), but I really value lightweight, compact cameras with great IBIS and weatherproofness, so this ticks all the boxes for me.

This is part of Black Friday / Cyber Monday deals for 2019

With the plastic body, the black looks better.

Olympus better hit it out of the park with a feature packed non-absurdly priced E-M1.3 or I'm jumping ship to Sony

    • $2,500 price tag probably, at the rate their new products are priced :(

      • Yeah just not seeing the value when an A7iii body is 2.1k.. I get that you need to factor in equivalent lens cost/size, but still.

        • agreed. actually in the same boat. I ended up geting a 2nd hand EM1-2 for $1k.

@lawyerz: I'm still rocking the original E-M1. Love it but showing its age. Didn't see anything compelling in E-M1.2

    • At that high price, it's only for people who have already invested heavily in micro 4/3 lens system and couldn't be bother selling their equipment to start a new system. I agree otherwise people should consider investing in the Sony mirrorless full-frame system instead. Personally I'm still using my old E-M5 Mk1 camera because I am only a casual photographer, if I am to start new again I would buy a Sony A7.

      • M4/3 still has it's place. The weight/size advantage is still compelling.

        • Agreed. I briefly went over to g9 which is still m4/3 but sits comfortably in the heavier side of camera and absolutely hated it. It was a drag to bring out to social non-professional events and a pain to carry around.

          Sold it after a month.

Problem is people think price = quality, or bigger sensor is always better. That's not the case, it's always a trade off somehow.

The issue is that the people most concerned weight are also the ones using them to make a living, and why price becomes a factor =/

@lawyerz: Something like the a7 isn't much bigger than the EM-1 though. Lenses will obviously add a bit, especially as you get into the reachier lengths.

            • @wittyusername: The body is usually not the issue, the lenses are. Generally FF lenses are bigger and more expensive. If you prioritise size/weight over maximum light gathering capabilities, then FF is still not the way to go.

They don't make prime f3.6 lenses on FF for equivalent sizes to f1.8 on m4/3.

              • @lawyerz: Well time for an update hah. I bought the Sony A7iii body for $1,899. Guess I'm selling all my M43 gear. If you are after any hit me up

@cyrax83: Hahaha. I considered getting it too. Maybe next time. Thanks for the offer! But I've got way too many lenses ;)

                  Enjoy the new camera!!!

I'm trying to figure out what can compel me to stay with Olympus (other than the outrageous amount I've spent on lenses) and unfortunately I'm starting to struggle with ideas.

      • Same boat here, still enjoy my E-M1 but Olympus seems to be struggling financially and not sure how long the rest of the company can prop up the camera division (although Nikon is in even deeper trouble on that judgement).

Sony on the other hand has had record profits from their camera division and so future roadmap looks a lot brighter.

In reality the E-M1 does everything I need so I'll probably try use it until it breaks (or I get a good price on the MK II which is still too expensive) or there are some more affordable lenses available for Sony FF, but I don't like the thought that in a few more years my Olympus gear could be worth a pittance…

In body stabilisation? no one else does IBIS like them. I also like the old style look of their EM5 series, which Fuji has in their XT line up but does not have IBIS.

The original older prime lenses are really small and relatively cheap - I haven't seen a another system having a lineup of lenses at those prices. Referring to the f1.8 lenses for 17mm, 25mm, 45mm.

For example, I considered going over to sony a few years ago but then I had a look at their lens prices - my gosh was it expensive. So consider not only the body, but also the lenses available.

It most definitely depends on what kind of shooter you are. I'm just a casual, hobbyist, non-pro, non-wildlife/sports/events shooter. Don't need crazy specs camera, just something small and light that I'll actually bring out with me.

It's a shame they're going in a different direction - EM1X, all the massive pro lenses, both in size and price, launch price of $1,999 for the EM5-3, which was a massive letdown. I guess they're going after a more lucrative market than the hobbyist, but there's that.

In terms of them going out of the business - well, they've been around for 100 years. They'll manage. They have more diversification than other companies I reckon, although I'm not too familiar in this area.

For me its also a bit of a sentimental thing, my grandfather used olympus, my dad used olympus, and now I am using Olympus as well. :)

P.s. - just bought a 4k shutter count second hand EM1Mk2 for $1k off gumtree, reckon that was a decent price.

        • Yep. Olympus medical division actually posted a record year for profits, so the company isn't going anywhere and they've specifically mentioned that they are using the income from medical to allow them to improve their camera division.

I took the plunge because as a complete system I really like MFT and I'm way more likely to have an em5 on me than a full frame mirrorless

  • Damn I preordered this (and have already received it) a few weeks ago from Camerastore.com.au for $1700. Great price at $1600

How's the image quality? Did you upgrade from a previous Olympus?

      • +1

I crossgraded from a Sony A6400, I really wanted the IBIS and I previously had a Panasonic GX85 so I knew M43 lenses are lighter and cheaper than the Sony offerings. Images are actually really nice ( heres one of a kooka I took with 17mm lens https://www.instagram.com/p/B5FIZ8fp-ue/ ) Video quality and stabilisation seem pretty good too
