What Features Do You Consider Important When Choosing a Gaming Monitor?

I've been considering purchasing a gaming monitor for some time but I'm having trouble deciding which to buy.
I've been researching features but I would like to hear the opinions and insights from ozbargainers.
What features do you consider a must? Common mistakes when choosing a monitor? Good brands? Recommended models? Etc.

My considerations

  • Size: Not too big, around 28"
  • Refresh rate: I think 100Hz+ is preferable
  • Latency: I'm not sure if 5ms is too slow or not
  • Type (IPS/TN/VA): I'm leaning towards IPS because better colour reproduction and viewing angles
  • Resolution: 1080p to QHD, not really into anything higher
  • Curved or flat: Probably flat, not sure if curved is worth it
  • Ultrawidesceen: Sounds cool but not sure if particularly good for gaming
  • G-Sync/Free-Sync: Nvidia user so maybe G-Sync, seems to be expensive and not sure if worth it

Hope to get a good deal this Black Friday/Cyber Monday

It comes down to what sort of games you play and what other things you do apart from gaming.

If you have aspirations of being a competitive CS:GO or fighting game player and you're at a level where you're starting to lower your reaction times, then yes, refresh rate and latency are the most important things. I would also suggest going for a smaller monitor (it's easier to focus over a smaller area). Basically BenQ's Zowie line are the only real choice in this field.

If you care more about cinematics, then I'd rather go with something that's higher resolution and IPS. The more details you're able to see and the better colour reproduction will make your games look much better, but make sure you have the graphics power to be able to push those pixels. If you're doing anything apart from gaming, then colour gamut and colour accuracy are also extremely important. I find that IPS panels tend to be the best (in general), but high-end VA panels can be better than cheap IPS panels.

    • I've heard TN are good for competitive FPS but I generally play a variety of games so not really looking into this.
I prefer clear, high quality images hence why I'm leaning to IPS. I'm trying to stay away from ultra high resolution because I won't be able to maintain high resolution and high refresh rates.

What's your thoughts on G-Sync? They seem to be notably more expensive to normal (and Free-sync) monitors.

Unless you're a progamer, TN refresh rate is probably lost on you. I'd pick IPS because it has real life benefits outside of gaming, e.g. photo editing. The problem is that combing IPS with 100Hz, and especially G-sync bumps up the price a LOT.

If you already have GTX card, then G-sync is a no brainer.

IMO, 1440 at 27" is the sweet spot.

Unfortunately, adding each of those specs you've listed keeps adding to cost. Only a few monitors like Asus PG279Q or AOC AG271QG do them all, and you're looking at $800+.

    • I was hoping to spend $500 or less. So far I've only found ViewSonic VX2758-2KP-MHD to be in this price range with 2k res, 144hz, free-sync (g-sync compatible) and 27". Reviews seem to be quite positive

The ViewSonic is a decent monitor. Tomorrow being blackfriday you might be able to get some deals. The Acer Nitro VG271UP might go down to around $500 which I'd also recommend.

        • Looks decent, thanks for the recommendation

  • Just found this post. Seems to have similar requirements to me

I have had a few gaming monitors & I like the Viewsonic
IPS is not as fast as TN monitors, but if you want a fast one, you must pay for it

    https://www.newegg.com/black-viewsonic-xg03-series-xg2703-gs…

the above is a g-sync monitor with 165Hz refresh rate
it is a 2K IPS monitor
here is one for just over $900
