I Am Phd Student in Analytics, Let's Do Something

Hi everyone,

I am a PhD student in IT (Analytics). I love to play with data and generate new insights. In future, I want to see myself as an entrepreneur. That's why I am always looking for problems that can be solved using data. Most of the time, I come up with crazy ideas.

Ask me about your problems that can be solved using data! I will try to tell you an approach! Then maybe we can work for a startup!!

    How to achieve World Peace?

    • +2

That's bloody obvious mate. Everyone knows this.

      Get rid of all hoomans.

      • +1

Imagine if you could click your fingers and make half the world disappear?

        • +7

The world would be pretty crowded then, with a lot less resources. I'm not sure peace would ensue.

          • +2

@GG57: Depends which half is destroyed. If it's the northern hemisphere, that's about 90% of the human population with it. It's also the larger part of land mass and resource too.
Edit: It does remove all the most well armed countries though

            • @FireRunner: It would also put out our current orbit around the sun. We'd either be pulled into the sun or pushed into deep space. dust was correct on their support of tshow's theory of getting rid of all humans.

Perhaps datascientist007 can assist with the analytics to let us know which way, or maybe even collide with the Moon?

              • +1

@rompastompa: We'd likely loose the moon, having only half the mass. It might become a planet but it might also hit us.
The earth might form a new orbit around the sun, unlikely in a region suitable for life.
I guess with all life gone, world peace is ensured.

                • @FireRunner: the moon is loose! do we need to keep it on a tether so that we dont lose the moon?

or maybe we can keep the moon loose. we need a Bruce Willis to be the hero in Armageddon if the moon decides to come crashing into us.

      • Or get the existing ones to be nice to each other? Yeah…I know…..

    • +1

Don't need data for this one.
If we get rid of 'countries' and all the associated controls, with people able to roam the world and gather with like-minded others, all should by hunky-dory.

      • I theorize that such a society cannot be sustained and during the short intersection of time that it does, it will breed a group that identifies with long hair, funky dyed hemo clothing and increased demand for acid.

        • +1

          Peace out man!

      • -1

I think we should get rid of 'countries' and 'religions' first. It will solve half of the problems.

        • You are the data scientist; on what basis do you make this statement?

I am only a theorist; my statements can be unfounded.

          • @GG57: Intuition!

        • Isn't that the end goal of communism? Remove all gods and government and earth will become a utopia?

          • +2

@FireRunner: Kinda, Marxism based communism was all about creating a humanist utopia on Earth so eliminating anyone with different beliefs was only a matter of course for them. I've never heard that they wanted to get rid of government though? In fact I thought it was the opposite, make government so big and intrusive that it becomes a 'God replacement'. Almost there now and the globalists have long touted China as their ideal social construct to inflict on the rest of the world. Not long now, another couple hundred years or less. And in the end it's all just cycles and another one will start (if there's anything left). As Kipling wrote in 'Gods of the copybook headings"

'In the Carboniferous Epoch we were promised abundance for all,
            By robbing selected Peter to pay for collective Paul;
But, though we had plenty of money, there was nothing our money could buy,
And the Gods of the Copybook Headings said: "If you don't work you die."

Then the Gods of the Market tumbled, and their smooth-tongued wizards withdrew
And the hearts of the meanest were humbled and began to believe it was true
That All is not Gold that Glitters, and Two and Two make Four
And the Gods of the Copybook Headings limped up to explain it once more.

As it will be in the future, it was at the birth of Man
There are only four things certain since Social Progress began.
That the Dog returns to his Vomit and the Sow returns to her Mire,
            And the burnt Fool's bandaged finger goes wabbling back to the Fire;

And that after this is accomplished, and the brave new world begins
When all men are paid for existing and no man must pay for his sins,
As surely as Water will wet us, as surely as Fire will burn,
The Gods of the Copybook Headings with terror and slaughter return! '

            • @EightImmortals: I remember reading in a history book that the idea of communism was to create a perfectly equal society.
The government was supposed to be a temporary authority which was to work towards this goal and dissolve once reached.
Perhaps it's the most idealistic form of communism or perhaps it was what people were told under the communist regime.

              • +1

@FireRunner: Yeah that sounds more like it. I've NEVER known government to give back power or money once they have it, regardless of that government's ideology. The problem is that society can never be 'equal' without force, even in utilitarian ways. Consider 2 people, both are 'equal' in terms of their intrinsic humanity but once is junky dole bludger who doesn't WANT to do anything and the other is a brain surgeon who saves the lives of many people. In that second sense they are unequal. IIRC the Marxist ideal was to have everyone economically equal but of course even then some were more equal than most, namely the political class. ALL social theories, regardless of how good they sound on paper all fall down at the same point….human nature. There is always someone or some gang that wants to rule the world in some way and it's always at the expense of others. The only way any utopian society can work is when all the members of that society just want to get on with lives without negatively impinging on anyone else. That is why, after millions of years of evolution we have not evolved morally in any way.

                • @EightImmortals: Utopia is and always will be an impossibility due to human nature and just the way circumstances work out. The only way you will never negatively impinge on someone else is if you cannot interact with anyone.

            • @EightImmortals:

Marxism based communism was all about creating a humanist utopia on Earth so eliminating anyone with different beliefs was only a matter of course for them

I do not support eliminating people with different beliefs. This is supported by the Chinese and Soviet communism.

              • @[Deactivated]: I never meant to say you did. Though when you spoke about eliminating 'religion' I'm not sure how you intended to go about that? What do you mean when you said you want to get rid of Buddhism, Christianity, Judaism, Hinduism, Islam, Jainism, Sikhism etc etc? And what worldviews would be left? Just yours? And what makes your worldview superior to all the others? As I mentioned previously the problem is not with 'religion' the problem is with human nature and if you doubt that then you only have to look at the centuries human atrocities to see that they were caused mostly by greed, lies and non-religious ideologies (i.e. Marxism/communism) The only religious exception would be Islamic Jihad but that's been going no-stop for 1400 years. Even the religious violence in places like Ireland cannot be reconciled to the teaching of the religion those people claimed to a part of so for this conversation I haven't included them.

I think we should teach MORE religion, and have it taught by people from those beliefs, no point in having atheists teach about Islam for e.g. That was the youngsters could at least understand what each one was about and be able to reconcile their friendships to people around them with different beliefs if you know what I mean? The more we keep things verbotten the more separation and fear-borne ignorance permeates the world.

                • @EightImmortals: You are right. Even if we get rid of countries and religion, then people would start fighting over skin colour, height, beauty, money, food etc. Can I say fighting is inborn to human like other animals?

The only religious exception would be Islamic Jihad but that's been going no-stop for 1400 years
Islam does not support Jihad. Those who are doing, they are just using it.

          • @FireRunner: I do not believe in communism. However, if you observe the events around the world, it should be clear why there is no peace.

            1. Israel- Palestine: Country, Religion
            2. China, USA: Country
            3. Iraq, Seria, Yemen: Country, Religion
            4. Afganistan, Pakistan: Country, Religion
            5. Africa: Money, food
            • @[Deactivated]: You can't exactly remove borders and religions. Nationality and belief and ingrained into people.

              • @FireRunner: That's why there will be always wars

                • @[Deactivated]: I think even if we were to dissolve all countries and everyone turned to atheism, human nature will always stir up trouble.
World peace is an unobtainable fantasy.

        • you can call it countries, or religions, or anything. But it all comes down to human.
So I agree with tshow, get rid of human.
As long as human exist, they will create something to segregate and separate.

      • Why would you need to get rid of 'countries'?

        and all the associated controls

        You mean laws?

with people able to roam the world and gather with like-minded others, all should by hunky-dory.

Couldn't people do that already within their country?

        • A lot of laws could go and we would only be better off, we only need a few. People are not free to roam their own country, you need a 'drivers license' for one thing, and other forms of 'identifying' yourself to the state if one of their agents demands it (even if you have done nothing wrong). The freedom to travel and run your life free of government oversight and interference disappeared long ago. I heard that in the U.S. they now have to have internal passports to fly within the country itself?

          • @EightImmortals: I mean why do we need to get rid our borders. There's no utopia within any country, so why would there be if there was no borders? Even if you have to have ID, we have the freedom to travel within our country.

        • We are trying to achieve world peace here.

If there are no countries, then countries would not be able to antagonise or declare war on other countries. So-called defence forces would not be required.

Let the people decide where they want to live.

          • @GG57: Trouble is if there are no countries or borders then government would be global and instead of it being the U.S. V Russia V the U.K. V China etc it would be one great political class against the rest of us…..just like government now only there would be one great big one.

      • There is a concept called 80:20 rule. Once someone observed that in Italy 80% of the properties were held by 20% of the people. Later they modified it to: 20% of your issues create the 80% problem. So if you solve the 20%, then 80% of your problems will be gone.

Then in recent years, some one calculated that malaria is the top issues in the global crisis.

Before you can deliver digital insights for subject matter ABC, you need to obtain volumes of data that you legally own.

Are you trying to consume data from free government sources or pay for commercial data sets?

    • +2

Collecting data is obviously a problem. But once you get a great idea, you can always collect money and use that money to collect data.

You forgot to add a poll… OzBargain loves a good poll…

I want to make a gambling prediction app, calculates current form, home & away, weather conditions.
    Lets do it

    • Interesting! How weather conditions are related to gambling?

      • Some teams play better in the rain then others, some teams travel better than others…
It might not make sense but still something to calculate

        • That makes sense. I heard type of tennis courts has an impact on the result.

    • Don't the bookmakers already have that?

      • You can introduce a better one.

      • +1

Before Facebook, there were myspace, hi5 etc.

With all the traffic infringement posts on OzBargain nowadays, how long until OzBargain becomes a traffic infringement forum first, and bargains second?

If we analyze the data, we can determine the optimum time to start up OzFines, and start making money off ads etc.

    • +1

Totally agree with you! Or maybe an AI-based app that will tell you what to to do in case of traffic infringement?

      • +2

You clearly don't understand AI; You're more of a joke than a data scientist.

        • -3

Of course I do not know anything about AI. That's why even though having bachelor and masters in Computer Science, I was waiting for your comment.

          • @[Deactivated]: AI is artificial intelligence where the system can think for itself. Even Tesla is machine learning and not AI; why would we need AI to tell us what to do in case of a traffic infringement?

You can use your mad computer science skills and build an application for that.

        • -3

Why don't you start an institute on AI so that I can learn?

        • -3

World would be a better place only if it didn't have any people like you.

  • You might like this sub: https://old.reddit.com/r/dataisbeautiful

The problem in my profession (teaching) is that many teaching strategies become 'in vogue' and pushed on us (teachers)… but there's not data basis to know if they are good. Why change what I do just because the admin wants me to…

Teaching and student performance is so incredibly multivariant that I think it's actually hard to use data to see if strategies work or not.

    • Good point. I am also a teacher. There is a field called learning analytics.
However, if you can collect enough data, then it is possible to observe which strategies work/suit which type of student and teacher.

When you tell people that, do they yawn before or after you've finished the sentence?

        • I fall asleep after finishing the sentence.

  • Most of the time, I come up with crazy ideas.

Let's start with some of your crazy ideas. Pitch 30 ideas to me, it will give me enough data to know whether you have crazy ideas.

    • I already came to the conclusion that I come up with crazy ideas!
Like, starting a video sharing portal that will pay the viewers!

      • So I could earn around $1000 for 1 million views? Sounds productive.

        • In youtube, you are doing it for free or paying money

    Next week's Lotto numbers?

  • Why can't the NBA run a schedule where there are no back to back games?

    • That's a scheduling problem. There are many algorithms that can do it. I think they do not want back to back games.

      • I think you should get into the 300+ horse racing factors and give Z and his 20 staff a run for their money .

    • impossible to achieve.
back in the 90s Miami had to play Seattle at home, then the next day in Seattle.

  • Data science eh?

How about you gather data on all the previous lotto draws, exclude all combinations where 6 numbers have already occurred, then subtract that from all other possible combinations of 6 numbers and tell us how many are left? (probably heaps….) Though I guess if there was a way of reliably predicting those outcomes someone would have already done it.

    • good suggestion, as lotto is just pseudo random.

    • +1

If they use a computer to generate the number randomly, still it can be predicted. Because most of the random numbers are random! They use specific algorithms that will give you a number depending on the seed value.

  • +1

Do we have enough data to prove climate change?

    • I am confused about that. In most of the articles, they would say the ice is melting due to climate change. But in very few studies, some are claiming ice is increasing in another pole.

Depending on the current trend, it is sure the earth will be warmer in the upcoming days. But sometimes I think, the core of the earth is cooling, so is it possible these will cross each other?
