An Expat Possibly Migrating from Sydney to Perth

Life has been good here in Sydney but I got a job offer from Perth. I'm almost two years in Australia now.
Never been to Perth, but my wife has been with her work. She reckons that there are less jobs there, houses are cheaper, life is slower.

My questions are:

1) how are salaries in Perth compared to Sydney? I know I will have a job but I need options in case I don't stick to said job.
2) what are some good/cheap areas to live? I'll drive a car and I don't really care about distance but my wife will rely on buses and trains…
3) How is the weather compared to Sydney? I could go to Melbourne too but the weather there is really bad.

Anyone else moved to Perth or living there to share his opinion?

Thanks guys

    Renting I'm guessing?

If renting, as with any major city I guess, the rents get cheaper the further out you get, but suburbia public transport isn't the best.

Where will you be working? CBD or elsewhere?

Weather would be similar afaik, but can depend on coastal or inland (Fremantle to Mandurah will be cooler than Armadale, for example)

  • salaries are lower than Sydney but so is the cost of living but I think as a general ratio, Perth might come out ahead
areas to live depends on where you work and what priorities you have (close to beach, train station, shopping centre etc)
Sydney is more humid in general but temperature wise it's similar

I have done this move and travel regularly to other Australian cities. Some thoughts:

    1. City is much much smaller and more clique. Harder to get to know people personally as people are in their own little bubble. Perth is less multi cultural and you may find Perth has backward thinking in many regards (if you have lived elsewhere in Australia). Many people view it as a big country town.
    2. Less jobs, mostly focussed around resources (even Big4 and MBB are focussed around serving mostly mining and O&G companies).
    3. I find lower quality of work is acceptable as Perth struggles to attract quality people. We often complain of people leaving to go to Melbourne or Sydney.
    4. Perth is far from Sydney/BNE/MEL. If you live here and travel often to east coast, it's easy to get sick of the travel.

In the flip side, it's a pretty easy city to live in. Cheap houses, good salaries (if in mining or O&G), and close to Asia for quick trips.

    On your questions:

    1. Depends on sector. In mining or oil and gas, better than what I could get in Sydney.
    2. The closer to the ocean, the more expensive and the cooler in summer due to the fremantle doctor (breeze in summer). Do you have kids? What's your budget? Where are you working? Good and cheap doesn't really exist. Cheap areas attract people who you may not want to live next door to. Generally west of the freeway (Mitchell or Kwinnana is a good start)
    3. Great - lots of sunshine. But summers are dry and hot and we have little rain in summer. We have low humidity unlike Syd or BNE.

I do windows and doors manufacturing/installing, but i would gladly change my trade if there's potential

I know what you mean, i just dont know absolutely anything about Perth and want some recommendations where to start looking.
I dont have kids yet, im just looking for a small/cheap apartment for me and my wife in a safe/quiet area that it relatively easy to get to CBD with public transport.

ABSOLUTELY marvellous! Similar weather to my home country greece.

Coming from Greece to Sydney, i think the exact same thing about Sydney. People are way less social and are way more rude. I'm already used to it and plan to live in my own little bubble myself

Dont travel to Australia much for anything other than leisure, mostly interested in overseas trips to Europe

    1) ok, but many of the roles are based around mining and O&G so cyclic
    2) there are pockets of shit areas, but work backwards from public transport and requirements
    3) hotter, dryer.

  • I would take a strongggggggggggg look at Melb over Perth.

by ex-pat you mean UK? I have been out in Aus now for 10 years from the north east and live in canberra, life is good here, chilled, good jobs good housing. Been to melb a bunch of times, and really enjoyed the time there. Great public transport, jobs, sports, entertainment.

I hear Perth is nice, but unless you are a lizard I dont know if i would think the weather is great out there lol

    • How is Melbourne weather better? I saw one day they had 39 in the morning and 9 in the night.

google averages, perth way warmer way drier, might be what you prefer, not my bag :)

        • i thought it was the consensus that drier climate is way better, no?

          • @nikoris: thats just personal choice mate, droughts / fires / dry wastelands.
