Here are the bands stated on their website Which ones are missing (disabled)?

    3G Network
    3G Network 850, 900, 1900, 2100

    4G Network
    4G Network FDD: B1(2100), B3(1800), B5(850), B7(2600), B8(900), B17(700), B20(800), B28(700) TDD: B38(2600), B40(2300), B41(2500)

    • +2

      definitely the 2G Network…. LoL

      Missing:

      2G GSM
      GSM850, GSM900, DCS1800, PCS1900

      • +1

There no 2G networks in Australia, no point in listing them.

        • +2

          Whoosh!

        • +2

          straight to the keeper……….

    • +3

Looks like they are all there (unless someone proves me wrong).

Optus will lockdown bands on phones that use cheap Mediatek processors, but there is a work around:
      https://www.ozbargain.com.au/comment/5778169/redir

Maybe they can't lockdown bands on Exynos-powered phones

      • +7

Purchased one 3 months ago from Target $249 (which I thought was a bargain) and being an Optus customer, on the $120 365day PP plan got the Unlock code free via Live chat (took about 10 days for it to be emailed). Put in a Telstra SIM and worked perfectly on 3G 850 and 4G was also perfect on 700. Also tried a Belong SIM with the same result.

  • On the Optus website, they state that the handset has been optimised for the Optus network and performance on other networks is not guaranteed. Not clear what they exactly do, but I remember reading other members' posts that some bands were disabled. YMMV.

    • +2

Still no solid evidence any bands have been disabled, although I'm not exactly sure what bands the other networks use.
Maybe they are just saying that to put people off buying & unlocking them to use on other networks.

      • +3

Well, if everything works after unlocking, then I think this is an even better deal than the recent Vodafone A20 deals.

        • Yes it does. See above.

  • +2

Crazy price, thought 159 for the A20 was good

  • Can anyone please help me in finding, will it be working if I put dodo (Optus reseller) sim?

    • +1

Just tried a Catch Connect sim and it works.

  • -2

Will pull trigger once I understand which bands are disabled/ability to unlock

  • +2

    Unlocking Cost $40 on ebay.

Can the phone be returned for any reason

  • What does it mean with prepaid phone?
Is it I can only use prepaid sim card from Optus or can I use my current postpaid optus sim?
    or it doesn't matter?

    • You can use postpaid or prepaid SIM without unlocking as long as it Optus

      • Cool. Thanks.

  • +1

    Wow that's crazy cheap. 1080p.
Likely has the same GPS issues tho.

  • +1

Does this have same GPS probs as A20?

  • What is the rom and ram?

    • 3GB

    • 3GB ram kills the deal. There is a 4gb 64gb rom version which is superior.

  • +11

A30 has one other big benefit over the A20 - 802.11ac wifi and 5ghz 802.11n support. you don't know you're missing it until you are trying to use a phone without it. This is a great deal.

  • +2

Will the A20 unlock method work with this?

    • What is the A20 unlock method? Unlocking cost $30 on ebay

    • +1

i don't think anyone has tried but the a30 is listed. i just unlocked a vodafone a20 with the u2 bootloader with about 10min total work using it so the tool and shop seem legit. only thing would be if the australian optus a30 wasn't supported though they have a list and you could check against that.

  • Thanks OP. Bought it. Hopefully it doesn't have the same issue with batter as A20 that I purchased last on Australia Post deal.

    • +1

What battery issue did you have with your A20?

      • +2

It was a batter issue, the phone didn't deep fry very well.

        • +2

Thought I got an answer then, but got a laugh instead.

  • +1

    Is this 64gb?

  • -1

is this a better deal than the commonly $159 A20 deal?

    • +1

      Yes.
This A30 is $120 off the Optus website price $299.
Voda A20 is $199 at BigW, so $159 deal is only $40 off

      • -2

shame that this is only good to use for Optus network .. and none of the Optus network satisfy my need of PAYG 365; i would've thought Amaysim be good to use but at 15.5c/MB vs Aldi 5c/MB … it's no brainer

        • +1

Ages ago I was looking at the "999" plan for a low-cost PAYG plan on the Optus network: https://www.etel.com.au/duration 1c/MB albeit with 98c/month access fee - only a few megabytes makes etel better value than amaysim. $50 credit with no expiry. I was thinking about putting my second SIM onto this so that I can keep my primary on Telstra and have a backup when Telstra goes down.

          • @Zemm: do you know if this eTel charge per KB block or MB block?

            • +1

@tempura: According to the plan table they charge per KB. I last looked at this plan about half a year ago, but back then it was a $30 recharge instead of $50, with a few other features changed. So hopefully they'll be profitable enough to keep going and keep these cheap plans - allaying the fears of https://whrl.pl/RflJTK - I have no experience with eTel: I'm just a curious shopper

  • +1

I know this is a long show question to be answered. But does anyone know (once unlocked) will this phone work in Malaysia (with a Malaysian sim / telco) ?

    • +1

Yes it will work, just update to the local APNs

      • Ty.

  • Can I use on an optus post paid sim?

    • +2

anything that uses optus towers including other companies like amaysim.

  • +2

    Will this work with amaysim?

    • I would also be interested to know this if anyone has any thoughts

    • +2

I have never had an issue using optus prepaid with optus supplied companies like amaysim.

  • Thanks, Bought 5 OP

  • How easy is it to unlock this? Any good deals for the A50?

    • +2

      $80 via Optus
Or recharge $80 with of credit then it’s free

      Or $40 on eBay

      • How do you do it with eBay?

        • +1

You can buy unlock codes from what I’m assuming phone retailers who do it “shiftly”

      • +1

or try the a20 unlock method - they say a30 is supported, i just dont know the exact a30 model this optus one is to check against their list and i dont think anyone here has tried it yet. if it worked though $6.

  • hey guys. i want change phone from S7 to a30

    do you think good idea?

which one is better (i dont play game)

and hows camera? i believe A30 has no OIS. so no good at dark. isnt it?

  • -1

why A30s are associated to Optus whilst A20s are Vodafone?

  • I price match at OW

    • +2

OW version is unlocked, I don't think it's possible to match

      • I did

        • +1

wow lucky you, maybe I will try tomorrow to see if I can get it

  • Can I use this on amaysim or catch (both using optus network)?

    • +2

I just tried a Catch Connect sim and it works.

      • thanks

  • -1

    so A30 > A20 ?

  • has anyone attempted Voda Live Chat and see whether they price-match ?

  • Now on backorder until December 10th.

    • I ordered it anyway just after it sold out. They took the money from my card yesterday but still haven't provided tracking details…

  • Is this a grey import? No mention of two year warranty. Optus is selling the Australian two year warranty version for $299
    https://offer.optus.com.au/shop/prepaidmobile/samsung-a30

    • +8

Optus branded phones are never grey import

  • Does anyone know if this one is dual sim?

    • +2

      No not dual sim.

      I have this exact model.

      • thank you, much appreciated

      • You have this Optus prepaid version?

Could you tell us the model number?

Is it the same as the unlocked version: SM-A305YN ?

  • +4

Only +53 votes, seems like better deal than many of flagships for much more.

    • Yes, I was surprised too. The A20 deals (which were only slightly cheaper) were much more popular for the model below this one.
I wonder if the A20/A30 are being phased out? The A50 seems to be the cheapest models in some shops now.

    • +3

It's probably due to the baseless Optus claim that the unlocked phone won't work well with other networks.

      • +1

Yes, plus there seemed to be a few very cheap options for unlocking the Vodafone A20.

  • +1

Did anyone managed to unlock this A30?

    • Sounds like someone above got lucky via Optus Live Chat but YMMV.

      • Looking at the above previous messages, wasn't that someone who had an Optus 12 months prepaid SIM?

  • +6

Just got the phone today (it's model: SM-A305YN) and successfully unlocked it with the fonefunshop method.

Tested with both Telstra and Vodafone sims.

A real steal as I was able to purchase for $146.78 with Shopback 20% amazon flash cashback,

    • +2

Thanks, unlocked mine as well (SM-A305YN). Here is the link to unlock for 3 pounds (AU $5.74 using 28degrees mastercard)
      https://www.fonefunshop.com/phone-unlocking-services/Unlock-…

This deal was one of the standout bargains of the year for me, it should have got a lot more votes.
      Thanks for posting OP.

      • +2

I agree standout deal especially when combined with Shopback's 20% Amazon flash cashback.

I think what scared a lot of people off were fears re Optus "crippling" handsets for use with other providers via firmware and that there was very little evidence of cheap unlock methods like fonefunshop.

For $146.78 i was willing to take a punt though as could always use the handset on Amaysim if cheap unlock methods failed.
