Passport Fee as Part of $500 Minimum Payment to Get Credit Card Travel Insurance?

Hi OB Forum

Does anyone know if the passport fee (I had to renew) can be counted towards the $500 min payment to automatically get the travel insurance from credit card? What about the cost of visa to that country?

Thanks!

  • What company is the credit card from?

citibank Qantas rewards card. I think the last time i read the PDS it says flights, tours, etc… but i'm looking for legitimate loopholes hence going to OB to see if anyone has done it before lol. I used points for the flights so only spent $230 on Qantas taxes

What did your credit card provider say when you asked them??

    • +2

They said ask OzBargain of course.

      • Well they have certainly taken the correct course of action

What does your PDS say you need to do to 'activate' the insurance?

Last time i checked my PDS it's only costs attributed to the itinerary, flights, hotels tours etc.

  • I really doubt it, but only your Insurer can say for certain.

  • Op needs to be clearer.

Credit card is the Qantas credit card (not citibank Qantas signature card)

The minimum 500 is clearly for the ticket. Not for anything else.

The citibank signature however, has no minimum (and it has higher medical benefits too)

No, the CC is with citibank, it's earning me Qantas points. This is not the same as the Signature one that earns flexible points. I know because i have both. But thanks for the last note, I should now go and check the PDS for real

          • @macr0hard: Yap that one just asks you to charge the full ticket price to your signature card. No minimum.

I remember comparing and citi bank cc has one of the better insurance benefits.

Just out of interest, citi has unlimited medical benefit, the amex explorer has 2.5 mil.

Tbh I'd imagine the insurance would pay to get you out asap and back in Aust

Yes you should have done this to begin with.

  • If you're relying on this $500 to be eligible for the insurance, you're taking a gamble if you don't ask the insurance directly and only rely on what strangers say here.

I had a similar situation a couple of years ago. I rang up the insurance company who said passport and visa fees do not count. The money had to be spent on plane tickets (taxes on ff booking were ok), hotels, etc.
