Having just spent the last three weeks piano hunting, I can give a bit of help here:

At this price point you have a few options:

Casio PX-770 - its a great choice at this price (won't be lower than $1200ish anywhere else in Aus), it essentially has everything you need for home use. all the nice bells and whistles. there is an 870 version which is slightly better (however never really goes below $1500 and is hard to find in Australia).

Roland FP-30 $1099 (this is the one I picked in the end and I do not have one regret) - beautiful sound and feel

Yamaha p125 $1100~ I also tried this one instore and its every bit of the equal to the FP30. I think it is the most popular around the $1k mark.

All come with the ability to use apps. PX-770 and Roland FP-30 have MIDI to connect your computer up for recording and feedback etc. p125 has something similar but it is called USB to HOST. Roland has bluetooth which I have found to be very handy with app use.

This forum should help if you're deciding between any: https://forums.whirlpool.net.au/thread/348mqxq3

    • Great write up but the price on the Yamaha is wrong? I was looking at pianos earlier in the year and the cheapest price was $850 approx then.

Today the same place has it for $789 - https://www.australianpianowarehouse.com.au/product/digital-…

      • oh sorry, all that above applies to full sets (ie with stand and pedals). But yes, you're right - you can get the individual keyboards at a lower price point (roughly 200-300 cheaper).

        • Ah that makes more sense. The full set is $1000 odd.

          • @jlogic: So is this Casio full set?

            • @dan o: Have to ask. The picture has it but the text talks about ability to plug in a 3 pedal unit.

Piano warehouse has the same text and picture.

    • Where did you buy the Roland?

    • Hi Deair,

will this be good enough for kid learning piano? or the standard (traditional, non-digital) piano is a better option?

      Cheers

        Hi Alex,

I am no expert - however it has 88 keys just like traditional pianos. It has the sound engine of a grand piano, so each note sounds as close to a grand piano as you could get. You can use apps that provide realtime feedback and teaching. The piano comes with preloaded songs. Plus you can record and upload songs to the computer.

        • Deair, Thanks for your reply.

I'm a bit confused after reading others' comments regarding digital vs traditional piano. I have no idea, please forgive my ignorance.

Will the kid be able to play on traditional piano after learning on digital one? Will it be suffice for kid to learn the basic and technique before investing on the traditional one?

          Thank you so much.

@alexGoodwin: Yes that is correct. I'm learning from a youtuber who uses a traditional piano and we are playing along at the same speed, with the same techniques and similar sound. Unless I am missing something that someone can pick me up on, it is a great way to learn the correct techniques for playing. You still read the same music sheets. You still use the same fingers to play a major or minor chord.

            • @Dealr: Thank you so much! I'm going to take the plunge :)

  • I'm always amazed at the tech inside these but for me, none of them really quite match the feeling of playing on a real piano. I can't quite quantify exactly why but it just feels different - but on the other hand, having the ability to plug headphones in definitely has it's benefits.

Has anyone actually got one of these and used it to go through the AMEB/etc and still done well? (i.e. do you need a real piano to learn it properly or are modern digital pianos sufficient?)

    • You can learn a lot using an electric piano, but a real piano will be needed to learn the finer details and build hand strength.

Not sure about AMEB but all ABRSM exams use real pianos and you don't get to use them before the assessment. Each piano responds differently. Recommend putting in many hours on a real piano before exams.

There are regular community competitions and they typically use grand pianos.
ABRSM exams typically use upright pianos - depends on the examination venue.

    • I have been learning/developing/playing piano since I was in year 2 or 3 and now I'm a year out of uni. I have never played a digital piano and have always had my own real piano. Am I missing out on anything? I'm pretty damn techy but never looked into digital pianos!

      • I also grew up on a standard upright piano and whilst different to the ones used in AMEB exams, I can’t help but think the digital ones must feel very different. I have tried a few digital ones when I see them in stores, and it feels close enough to what I remember as being real in terms of key press but it still feels different. I could never get my chromatics to feel as fluid. Even using the pedal which should feel the same felt different in terms of tactile response. Shrug. Maybe I’m just old school, but I’m also horrendously out of practice.

Yeah digital pianos when I played them in stores always feels slightly too mechanical/fixed… IDK how to explain. BUt yeah you should get back onto playing, it's fantastic and fun!
