How early should I get to the airport for a domestic transfer flight Jetstar?

I am flying with Jetstar on Thursday, Sydney > Gold Coast (Depart at 0705) Gold coast > Toyko (Depart at 1030)

My questions:

  1. What time do I need to be at the airport to check-in my luggage? (it is a domestic flight first, I am assuming 60 min before flight)

  2. It takes me about an hour to gets to the airport, if I am going to get a Uber at 4am do I need to pre-booking it? Are they easy to get in the morning?

P.S. Any updates on the strike, is it starting on Friday? *fingerscrossed

    1. What does the Jetstar site recommend?
    2. Why not book?
P.S. What does the Jetstar site say?

    Go now….

    • He wouldn't smell very nice by Thursday. Stuff some spare undies down the front of your pants so they don't get checked in

Probably would rely on google as that is where most will get any answers from.

As for uber, I'll leave that to someone else.

Assuming 4am pick up and 1 hour travel time I would guess you are ok with about 2 hours before departure

Today they had a IT glitch which adds to the chaos, plus with friday being start of strike, and Jetstar allowing people to move to earlier flights you may find its congested at the airport, so 2 hours would be minimum.

A hours less sleep will probably help the blood pressure more than missing the flight

Yeah I was thinking 2 hours minimum just to be on the safe side. I would rather be waiting around at the airport than missing a flight

in regards to pre-booking an uber it depends on where you live. i have some friends who have pre-booked uber who have either been waiting much longer than expected for a car (in this case they cancelled and got a taxi) or were picked-up on time. this is also the same as some peoples experiences with booking a taxi though. given this and the above points RockyRaccoon mentioned i would give myself plenty of time. i'm also one of those people who likes to get to an airport super early and wait there instead of at home.

personally i haven't needed to try prebooking an uber from that early but given where i live (north sydney area) i doubt i would have the longest of wait time, could be wrong.

    • I just wasn’t sure if there were many Ubers around at that time of day. I will try and prebook see how I go!

earlier the better, particularly with the incipient strike

In regards to your Jetstar flights on Thursday, your domestic leg should have no issue leaving Sydney. Check-in & bag drop closes 30 minutes before STD, so you should probably check-in online to save some time. Uber shouldn't be an issue as there are heaps of them nowadays - especially at 4am when all the late nighters are heading home after their big night out.

At 4.00am I'd get a taxi. I know from my house the fare is almost the same as Uber when there is no traffic.

60mins before take-off is heaps. It gives you 30 minutes to queue & bag drop as you'll have checked in online the day before (latest check-in is 30mins prior to departure) and 20mins to pass through security, grab a coffee and walk to gate. Boarding is usually 10-15 mins before departure If there's a big queue at check-in they will call you to the front anyway.

If there's a strike then early arrival would be helpful as they will have management scabs doing the check-in etc and the queues might be longer / slower

    • "scabs"? I'm sure travelers will welcome these 'scabs' getting passengers onto their flights instead of thinking 'I'm glad my flight was canceled and rescheduled for next week, as that won't affect my holiday at all. Anything to support the proletariat'

I'm sure the travellers would appreciate management stepping in to do the jobs of the striking workers but the fact remains that the common term for people undertaking these actions is "scabs".

    • 60 minutes is not heaps especially with the christmas season and the strike happening .

I would aim for 90 minutes early at the airport minimum .

      • which is why I said

If there's a strike then early arrival would be helpful

My experience with Qantas (Domestic to Sydney then transfer to International) is that you have to check the bag at the attended counter (can't drop it at the automatic machine). The staff then did additional checking on your passport and visa.
The whole process didn't take long but I wouldn't recommend you to arrive there like 35 min prior boarding.

1 hour is the minimum IMO.

    • Thanks for the heads up !

Jetstar are point to point though. So the OP will need to recheck in on the GC

  • I would have left last week just to be sure.

Your connecting flight is a Jetstar? I see you like to live dangerously.

    Allow 30-40 hours

International…. haw can you possibly think 60min…

It should say on your ticket… check the wb… but these days they expect 2 hours

    60min hahahahaha

    • If you had read the post correctly our first leg is Sydney to gold coast which is a domestic flight presumably 60 minutes would be sufficient however with the strikes we were thinking more like 1.5-2hrs just to be safe.
