Pollution Mask - Sydney CBD

Hi
The situation in Sydney CBD has become worse.

Where can I get a PM 2.5 Pollution mask in the CBD area?

Ordering online would be too late. It is barely breathable outside.

Please suggest if there are any sellers specially around Wynyard.

There is a Mitre 10 in Pitt St not far from Wynyard, might be the go - A couple of doors down from Officeworks

i think priceline chemistwarehouse any chemist will sell? maybe not pm2.5 but any thing better than nothing

    • +1

      Why the negs?

      • +2

        Maybe because …

        any thing better than nothing

        … is not true.

Still, I get what ChiMot is trying to say.

Recommend calling ahead to see whether any stock available.

You can also try Officeworks although not showing as available in store online.

    It really bad here.

    • Where is here?

      • +7

        Straya.

  • Yeah it's either markedly worse than it was last week, or my building's A/C has decided to conk it.

  • 3M P2 Masks work well.

I've been amongst bushfires and I use these in emergency situations. Obviously full face P3 masks work best.

  • Buy a mask from bunnings, better than those at pharmacies.

  • I got my mask from Hong Kong - never previously used..

    • +2

Them breathes tear gas. Good quality mask.

  • +3

Whatever you buy I'd ensure you also order something of good quality, even if it takes longer to arrive as it's only just Summer and those fires will not be going away anytime soon - which means the smoke isn't either.

I'm rural up near Coffs Harbour and have been living with conditions like these for well over a month now. :-/

    • That long! Sincere sympathy. Hope you get some relief soon.

    • "Coughs" harbour :( I hope it gets better for you….

  • I was walking around Wynyard at lunch and its pretty bad… can we please have an early mark :)

I was walking around Wynyard at lunch

Thanks for sacrificing yourself to report the conditions, but just stay inside and look after yourself.

    • Gf is at North Sydney and they have given permission for everyone t go home.

The smoke is triggering the alarms.

Some of the railway stations have been evacuated (I'm told).

Unless the mask fits without gaps (impossible for beards, unlikely for most everyone else) then it is unlikely to do much if anything, they're simply not designed for this. full face respirator would work but in reality:

Walk slowly and don't exert when outside, breathe shallowly as much as possible.
Stay indoors in AC, and remember after this is over car and ac filters will need a thorough cleandown!

TLDR: reduce exposure and don't exercise in it! Save your mask money for eneloops!

But I saw people jogging on the beach, they looked so happy

      • +2

@nfr, how can they be happy, they're running! and wasting valuable time when they could be OzBargaining! (reaches for another donut, fruit filled so one of my 5 a day!)

      • Obviously deranged from the lousy air quality. Those are grimaces, not smiles.

  • Do you have any Daiso stores in your area? They sell both normal and carbon coated masks. Both are not N95 rated and are unlikely to make much difference because they don't seal around your face, but it may be a last ditch option if there's nothing else available. If they're not sold out I would be very surprised.

If you're really in distress then try asking at a dentist if they can give you a mask. It won't be N95 but may be better than nothing.

Now is the time to stock up on N95 or even N99 respirators for next time. Because there will be a next time.

    • difference between N95 and P2 ?

      • Appears to be the same. Health NSW has this on one of their pages: "Why use a P2 face mask? (also called N95)"

    • I had trouble getting the Daiso ones to seal around the face, more so than other masks I've tried.

Paint supply places should have them

  • +9

Get a P2 mask and fit it properly. It's not rocket science, folks.
Then demand the government issues them to children and the frail, and vote out this irresponsible government who won't even support the bushfire fighters when they ask for additional funding for the worst fires ever in NSW

    • -7

Don’t blame the government. What we need is to be able to cut down trees without council permits.

      • And burn them?

    • +1

Voting? Government? I don't remember the last time I had faith in either.

  • You guys really need this type of mask instead.

    • The style is fine but the one linked has the wrong filters on it, for smoke

  • We bought some P2 masks for our whole office here this afternoon, free delivery orders over $50

  • If you're in Town Hall, I know of a place which sells these masks. I bought some when I was travelling in Japan earlier this year, finally found the right time to use it.

    • Those surgical type masks won't do much unfortunately. It's recommended to use one that's P2 rated.

  • +2

Just pull your shirt up over your face

    • Or stocking

      • +1

Warning: Pulling your shirt up over your stocking will raise many eyebrows…

  • I am using a 3M P2 mask and its amazing, you can't even smell the smoke!

    • Wow none of the expensive P1/P2 ones I got could block out even cigarette smoke…

  • Unless the mask fully covers the face without any gaps, then they would be completely useless.

    • Agreed - many aren't designed to form a complete seal.

  • I just got a box of disposable P2 masks from Bunning, a pack of 20 for about $30. I'm going to order some re-usable military grade N95 or N99 masks that comes with carbon filter(about $30 for a mask). The problem of disposable ones are they are just one size so might not fit everyone's face. The re-usable ones on internet like Amazon comes with different sizes (xs,s, m, L, xL). Go to Amazon search N95 N99 face masks and they will come up. You can get the 3M ones which is good brand but expensive. There is an American brand called Cambridge mask co. Not sure about those ones that come from China or India.

  • Sydney tools sells 12pcs P2 valve dust masks for $16.

  • Look for the ones rated p2, anything less will pretty much be useless unless you just want to prevent some larger particles from entering your airways. Like the ash and dust you can see, though likely not pm 10, def not pm 2.5 (which are the particle sizes air quality ratings are based on).

    There's some here at officeworks:

If you're in SW Sydney, I bought the roughly $14 20pk p2 Honeywell masks. Have 3 spare packs if anyone wants them.

  • I got some from Bunnings too.

    • The OP is asking for masks you can buy in the CBD area - where is Bunnings in the CBD?

Edit: Moot point; you wouldn’t be able to answer, being a Victorian. For those reading, the nearest Bunnings relative to the city is in Alexandria
