its either this or the Magnavox-Phillips dvd player for 50 bucks at woolies, I say spend the extra fifty :D

    • Frequently asked questions on the Phillips website

      Question:
What kind of USB flash drive or HDD is supported?

      Answer:
If there is a USB connector in the front of the device, USB flash drive or HDD is supported.

Requirements of the USB flash drive / HDD are as follows: see link >
      http://www.p4c.philips.com/cgi-bin/dcbint/cpindex.pl?scy=AU&…

  • Seems like a decent deal, considering the brand and retailer. Thanks for the post.

USB flash drive.. but will it power a USB 2.5" hard drive thats the key selling point, if it does then what a bargain!

    • all usb 2.0 certified ports should be able to use the 2.5 HDD easily

      • +2

        usb 2.0 certified maybe

Ive seen allot of usb 2.0 that do not power usb hard drives but work fine with usb thumb drives

        • +1

I have one and my portable HD does not work on it, flashdrive yes but not my Portable HD

        • Engage more

USB 2.0 plays video/music from USB flash/hard disk drive

It states that it works .. fingers crossed

i have one and can confirm it plays from 2.5HDD + NTFS support..
playback DIVX AVI + HIGH DEFINITION MKV (1080P) very good… cheaper den WD TV or those HD Players…

      • Is this the same model or the earlier BDP3000 that was being sold for $99 at the end of last year?

  • good find !!!!

  • can anyone confirm if this supports mp4 formats? Cant see that being listed in the product spec?

Been this price since before, around November last year?

Anyway great unit, it reads almost anything from my multi-partitioned 750gb portable HDD.

EDIT: Hmm, must be a newer model. Don't know if my comments still stand.

    • Gotta give you a + for the multi partioned hard drive, let me guess, you have a FAT32 partion for your PS3 and and NTFS partition for files over 4GB. Did you use Swissknife?

      • Haha, exactly, except I use it more on my Xbox than my PS3. And, I can't remember what I used.

      • PS3 Media server is the way to go for watching files with PS3 :)

Is this any good(other than playing BD&DVD) compares to WD TV?

  • can this product work in the same fashion as the WD TV? i.e. I would like to connect it by wireless to my home network and play files from my computer? thanks

    • Id like to know this as well. It says "Network Wi-Fi Ready (802.11 g/n)*". Hopefully that means we can play media over WiFi from a Media Server/other PC, as the WD device does. Would love confirmation though :)

I have a similar Phillips model that I also payed $99 for. I've had it for several months, use it almost every night, and have had no problems with it.

    Great purchase.

  • No offence, but what makes the WD TV so good compared to other media players at a similar price? It's just everywhere I go, it's WD this, WD that, but what makes them so much better from other media players?

    • they were probably the first to hit the mass market and the name has just stuck….until they make a few bad products it will probably stay that way

  • Shouldn't it be DVD region code 4? (Probably just a cut and past error)

Anyone know if the DVD side can be made region free?

    • I'm a bit confused too - what does "Region BD Region Code: B - DVD Region Code: 2" mean?
I thought Australia was region 4!

      • see below… for Australia DVD is Region 4 and BluRay is Region B. No way a reputable Aussie retailer is selling a dvd player that wont play aussie discs- most likely a typo. Otherwise just return it.

      • Dick Smiths would be just copying and pasting specs designed for the UK i.e. region 2

      • I remember a loooong time ago in the DVD wars - that Region #2 UK and #4 sometimes blurred also….some devices were made for both at once somehow….but the guys here are prob right - just wrong info and they wouldn't sell a dedicated OS region unit.

  • Great deal!!!

    edit: $278!

  • Hi, I'm don't really understand all the technical speak, Just need to know if anyone knows if this player plays Dvds/ Blu rays bought from outside Australia.
    Many Thanks

  • How does this one compare to the Soniq B100 that goes for ~$100 at JBHiFi?

    • +1

This one is better then the Soniq

    • I have the soniq that I bought for $95. I have no problems with it :) can't comment on this one though.
The soniq I set it to region free for DVD, and I can change the region back and forth for the Blu-ray depending on what region I'm going to watch.

      • The soniq is good, i didnt say it wasnt i only said this is better.

        • I wasn't replying to you.

copy and paste from wiki (with a few edits for simplicity)

    Blu-Ray Region Codes:

Region A- Most of the Americas, Southeast Asia, Japan, Hong Kong, Macau and Korea.
Region B- Most of Europe, Africa, Southwest Asia, Australia and New Zealand.
Region C- Remaining central and south Asian countries, as well as Russia some parts of China.

    DVD Region Codes

    0- Informal term meaning "worldwide".
1- United States, Canada, Bermuda, U.S. territories
2- Most of Europe, Middle East, Egypt, Japan, South Africa, and other smaller countries
3- Southeast Asia, South Korea, Republic of China (Taiwan), Hong Kong, Macau
4- Mexico, Central America, Caribbean, South America, Australia, Oceania
5- India, Afghanistan, Ukraine, Belarus, Russia, Africa, Central and South Asia, Mongolia, North Korea
    6- People's Republic of China
    7- Reserved for future use
8- International venues such as aircraft, cruise ships, etc.
9/ALL- Discs with this code can be played in any locale on any player.

  • Awesome just snaped up two of these will work well as media players

  • Be awesome if it did (pass-thru) DTS-MA from a .MKV on a 2.5" NTFS drive. It would indeed then be better than a WD media player.

  • no playback of .ts and .iso files via usb ?

  • +2

Thanks OP! Any idea how much the wireless adapter (WUB1110) might cost? I tried to find information online but doesn't seem like a popular product.

Also on the Australian website it seems like this is the only Blu-Ray player currently supported.

  • Interesting it has listed also:
    "Aspect Ratio 21:9, 16:9, 4:3"

…..anyone got a 21:9 TV and care to comment???

    • 21:9 is more relevant for home theatre projectors, not so much for TV.

  • So is it possible to region-unlock this for Bluray? I've found the DVD region unlock code, but I have a few US BDs that won't work on the PS3.

    • wana share the link to region unlock?

      • ugoagogo posted it above already.

    • No, cannot region unlock this for Bluray by entering unlock code, you would need to chip it, which would cost more than the player. The only cheap BD player that can be region unlocked for both DVD and Bluray is the Soniq B100, and even then you have to re-enter the "code" each time you want to swap from one region to another (only takes a few seconds though).

    • i think the new model Toshiba is multi region blu ray and that is probably about $130

      • +2

Model number for multi region Toshiba?

  • Just got mine today :) yey

    • yeah me too. quick delivery

    • Got mine today. On the box it says that you can Youtube if you connect it to the internet wired or wirelessly. Has anyone tried? How do you connect it, what cable do you use? Ethernet?

  • I've recieved the Blu Ray player, and can definitely say it plays the Australian Region DVDs.

The DVD Region 2 Description on Dick Smith is wrong.

It's pretty good value and plays Divx movies from a HD.
