Help Fix Faulty Panasonic LED TV

I have a 42” Panasonic LED TV that has recently gone faulty. See details:

Fault: On power on the TV flashes three times then black outs and begins a slow continuous red light flashing on indicator.
Model: TH-42AS700A
Purchased: 4 years ago so out of warranty.

Contacted Panasonic and they want to send a tech guy out to access the fault and discuss options. If manufacturer fault they will pay for assessment otherwise I will have to pay.

My thoughts is to sell the faulty TV and move on, but would like to try to fix it myself if possible. Any advice or help is appreciated

If that doesn't work, count the number of times that the red light flashes. This is the diagnostic code. If it flashes 11 times, open up the TV and clean the fan.

    • I’ve tried resetting the tv using various methods to no avail. I’ve updated post to note continuous red blinking so don’t know what that means.

Might be worth trying a local repair who might be willing to diagnose the issue for you?

But, it sounds like it would be a manufacturer fault unless it’s been physically damaged?

    • It hasn’t been physically damaged. Just wondering what they even mean by manufacturing defect? I figured it’s not that as it worked for 4 years…

  • Not worth it, buy a new one !

    • Probably not worth it if they charge me for assessment and repair. Wait and see.

  • I'd put my money on blown capacitors. They're quite simple to replace but you need some tech knowledge. And… you aren't legally allowed to work on them etc…….. but i do anyway

    • Capacitors look and tested ok using multimeter

      • You can't test capacitors with most multimeters. You need a capacitance tester and an ESR meter. And there's a lot of capacitors in a TV - did you look at them all?

Also, are you sure that the red light is flashing continuously? Could it be flashing a bunch of times and then repeating the sequence?

    • Who says you are not allowed to work on ANYTHING that you own?

  • I had a Panasonic 55”. Was 2yrs 9mths old I think when it just didn’t turn on one day. Can’t remember the red light sequence. Technician came to look - not repairable. Panasonic sent me a new current model tv. I was happy with that.

    • Makes me wonder if you had 3 years warranty …

      • Panasonic said it was 1 year, but on this occasion they’d like to replace the tv. We do have statutory warranty in Australia. An expensive tv should last a reasonable timeframe.

        • Is 4 years reasonable? I don’t think so

  • I have a Panasonic TH-L37G10A, its over 10 years old, it started turning off then back on by itself. Now it hasnt done that for ages, but does occasionally make a click, click noise. So im happy with the age and usage.

but if it was 4 years old i would be super unhappy…

    • Do you think it's fair I might have to pay for assessment of the TV if it's not a manufacturing fault?

      • No i dont.. its not fair.. unless there is missuse/damage, then yes its ok.
i feel a tv should last way more than 4 years, product failure of a componant doesnt mean Manufacturing fault though.. though reagardless, i feel they should fix it. But what i feel means nothing.

Used to work for authorised Panasonic and Sony repairer here in VIC

Can tell you 9 times out of 10 it will be warranty and you wont have to pay for the tech

the reason they advise you to pay for the tech if its non warranty is because people think they can get away with physical damage etc as warranty and Panasonic wants to be sure you understand it will cost if its not. If they find user interference has cause the fault they will charge you an assessment fee.

Do you thinks its reasonable to send a tech to your home for free?
    Would you work for free?
If Panasonic finds its a fault they will fix it for free and cover the tech, quite often they just replace the unit with the newer version of the one you have.

If you haven't damaged it or cause the issue then just get the tech out to fix it.

For the record… My working for the company i did is the reason to this day i will only ever own a Sony TV.
The way they go to bat for their customers even ones with 10+ year old TV's vs the other manufacturers always impressed me.

    • Good to hear. How are the Panasonic bunch?

Seems it’s a long wait to get the tech to even call me for assessment

      • Panasonic are good also, only issue we faced with them was they would cut off support for older products the literal minute they could.
They are only legally forced to support a model for 9 years after they stop manufacturing it, we encountered a LOT of plasma customers back in the day with faulty TV's they were happy to pay for repairs but Panasonic simply didn't make/supply parts anymore as their legal requirement too had ended.
Sony would offer a replacement tv with a HUGE discount when they couldn't fix a tv or it was super older etc .. and i mean HUGE discount

        • The technician said Sony wasn’t good for warranties. They try to get out of it as best and as soon as they can. He reckons Samsung are the best for all types of warranties.

          • @MuddyClear: Well not sure which tech Panasonic used but he is 10000% wrong.
Sounds like they don’t have a contract with Sony (they are selective)
            Sony go above and beyond.
Samsung are terrible it’s why they keep getting sued by the accc.

Anyways my experience is at the repair level.
Dealing with each brand Sony is def the best overall.

To conclude the tv was accessed and found it had a faulty screen. I was offered around $150 cash as it was not economical for them to fix it. Better than nothing but i am disappointed in Panasonic.

    • FYI, it took over a month to issue a cheque and they also requested to collect the faulty tv, which they didn’t tell me until I questioned why I hadn’t received the cheque yet. I won’t be buying a Panasonic TV again!
