Out Holiday 2020, interesting design for Microsoft's next console.

Some details:

The name Xbox is an expression of our deep history in gaming, our team’s unrelenting passion, and our commitment to both our fans and the future of gaming at Microsoft. It also signifies our belief that a gaming console should be for just that – gaming.

Alongside Xbox Series X, we also unveiled the new Xbox Wireless Controller. Its size and shape have been refined to accommodate an even wider range of people, and it also features a new Share button to make capturing screenshots and game clips simple and an advanced d-pad derived from the Xbox Elite Series 2 Wireless Controller. The new Xbox Wireless Controller will be compatible with Xbox One and Windows 10 PCs, and will be included with every Xbox Series X.

One Console, Four Generations of Gaming

One of the things we’re most proud of with Xbox Series X is the promise we’re delivering to our fans who have and continue to invest with Xbox. Thanks to backward compatibility, you can expect your gaming legacy, thousands of your favorite games across four generations of gaming, all your Xbox One gaming accessories, and industry-leading services like Xbox Game Pass to be available when you power on your Xbox Series X in Holiday 2020.

Building on our compatibility promise, with Xbox Series X we’re also investing in consumer-friendly pathways to game ownership across generations. Leading the way with our first-party titles including Halo Infinite in 2020, we’re committed to ensuring that games from Xbox Game Studios support cross-generation entitlements and that your Achievements and game saves are shared across devices. As we branch out and extend gaming to more players around the world, console gaming will remain at the heart of our Xbox offering. Game creators around the globe are already hard at work building content for Xbox Series X and our 15 Xbox Game Studios are developing the largest and most creatively diverse lineup of Xbox exclusive games in our history. On behalf of Team Xbox, we’re excited to enter the future of console gaming with you and can’t wait to share more in 2020.

need a cheap elite bundle with the elite v2 controller if that ever comes about

  • +2

Let the Xbox SeX (Series X) memes start.

    • +3

I'd rather just call it the SeXBox if you were going to go with that.

      • Tom Jones could write a song for it…

        • Tom Jones could sing the user manual…..just sayin'

      • I'm going to get banned for this…
Imagine the mid-gen refresh, the Xbox Series X X, or XXX.
        Please don't ban me.

  • Now it looks really much like a box.

  • +2

    The main bit:

From a technical standpoint, this will manifest as world-class visuals in 4K at 60FPS, with possibility of up to 120FPS, including support for Variable Refresh Rate (VRR), and 8K capability. Powered by our custom-designed processor leveraging the latest Zen 2 and next generation RDNA architecture from our partners at AMD, Xbox Series X will deliver hardware accelerated ray tracing and a new level of performance never before seen in a console. Additionally, our patented Variable Rate Shading (VRS) technology will allow developers to get even more out of the Xbox Series X GPU and our next-generation SSD will virtually eliminate load times and bring players into their gaming worlds faster than ever before.

Nice of them to keep a disc drive in it. The masses will be happy with that!

    • +1

Sarcasm or did I legit miss any mention of a disc drive in the article?

      • Actually legit serious comment, can see the slot on the front of the picture, and they mention it's compatible with cloud-based gaming, but don't say it's purely cloud based

  • The form factor is truly odd…
Maybe it's designed for horizontal orientation too (like the 360 was), otherwise it's simply not going to fit in the Entertainment unit.

    • +2

Says in the article that it can be horizontal or vertical

  • +1

"It also signifies our belief that a gaming console should be for just that – gaming."

Quite interesting considering this is a complete 180 on their whole campaign for the Xbox One which was meant to be an all in one entertainment device. I guess now it is more similar to playstation's "for the players' focus.

    • +1

Since then with the rise of smart TVs the Xbox One's purpose as an 'all in one' unit became redundant.

  • +1

i remember the xbox one had the premise that you could watch tv on your xbox. only worked in america. what a feature

    • +2

Got the digital tuner from the UK few years back, very handy :)
Though internet based TV would be even better!

    • TV tuner works fine to watch TV on Xbox One in Australia. It's the other features like recording etc. that never arrived

  • What does "Holiday 2020" actually mean..?

    • +4

      November/December 2020

      • +1

Thanks - wasn't sure if that meant Summer holidays - so June / July…

        I guess I can wait a year.

        • I guess you will have no choice.

          • @MrBear: I guess you guessed wrong. He could wait longer if he chose to.

    • I think it's late October/November.

Like, just before American Thanks Giving?

      • 100% December

      • I'm going to say late September. They'll want a full three month window for pre-Xmas sales.

        • +3

          Xbox One - Launched 22nd November 2013
          Xbox 360 - Launched 22nd November 2005
          OG Xbox - Launched 15th November 2001

          So umm yeah… December? ;)

Side note, interesting seeing how long each console stuck around for. 4yrs for OG Xbox must've felt like a very short time for a console!

    • Phil (what ever his name is) boss of Xbox was interviewed after the game awards and said Nov 2020

  • Rambling PR waffle dribbling about "passion", "investing", "consumer friendly" and other things that brainwashed people believe in.

  • Love it but I don't understand the name at all.

    • None of the names make sense. Not now, not ever.

And that's because the original console's name was derived from "Direct X Box", which was then shortened to "Xbox".

  • Wow, a "share" button on the controller, truly amazing.

    • Easier to snaptweet the dabs and flosses

Back in my day we were just worried about jumping over the crocodiles in pitfall.

Anyone know if there will be any Trade In deals at EB or somewhere to get the new console? I’m not sure if this is true but apparently previously they did a Xbox One + 1 Controller for Xbox One S + 1 Controller at EB games. Please ellaborate?

    • +10

Settle down, it hasn't even been 24 hours yet!

EB will always have a trade-in deal - it's just a matter of when.

      • Plus it's almost a year from release date..

  • X usually suggests defective. X is your X, with all the baggage. More accidents occur at X-ings than any other place on the road. X is to be tossed out. X is two abandoned sticks toppling over. X in fact is considered being disused in schools bc of its negative connotations.

    • +3

I don't think you know how to solve for x

    • Or X to the Z

    • X marks the spot. As in, where the treasure is.

  • Microsoft have said Scarlett will have backward compatibility with XB, XB360 and XB1 games which is a good thing so I can still play through my backlog of XB360 games (considering the XB1 had limited BC). If Scarlett let me play all those XBLA games and add ons I bought on the XB360 marketplace, I’d definitely buy one.

    • +1

      I wouldn't get too excited:

Project Scarlett will also be backwards compatible with all Xbox One, Xbox 360, and original Xbox games available on Xbox One today

      https://community.amd.com/community/gaming/blog/2019/06/09/a…

It'll only play the OG and 360 titles that are already available to play on the XB1. That said, it's still a massive deal. I'm more excited about the backwards compatible hardware. Won't have to go and buy several new controllers just for the odd occasion you're playing with mates, just pull out the XB1 controllers.

      • Come on Microsoft! :(

  • +1

kinda look like my air purifier

  • Anyone know which Holiday they mean when they said coming out 2020 holiday? I assume Australian and American holidays are different?
