De-orzbargained: Bye Bye Really Cheap Tickets On Air Asia

It has been normal to pay around $250 return to KL on Air Asia in sales over the last few years. But this year the lowest prices in their sales has been quickly rising. It's around double what it was. And then it's not easy to get even those prices (Asian customers with Air Asia credit cardsholders getting priority.)

Now the reason seems clear (see below) and we probably won't be seeing flights as cheap again (or at least not regularly):

  • last call for air asia passengers…..

  • They prices are usually highish unless it's their late may/early june sale. That's when the bargains always are.

    • I've been flying to KL 4 times per year for the last few years and have always paid less than $300 for each return trip.

As I buy the tickets 9 months before flying, I can tell you that june is not the only time their tickets are cheap.

In fact, I looked at the ticket prices this june/july sale and the cheapest return price was about $600

      • if anybody has paid anything like $300 for a Return trip to kL please tell me.

As Airasia has joined their main commercial rivals Malaysian Airways, they now have no need to be competitive hence the doubling of their cheapest prices.

Australian are being taken for suckers once again and being charged way more than asian for air fares

        • anybody?

        • I've paid that

        • zhenjie: paid what?

  • You spoke too soon? There's two sales up now…

I thought Air Asia and Jetstar already have this arrangement, sharing maintenance etc… and they've had it for over a year, no?

  • Yeah. Seems like I was wrong (or my complaints have worked :D )

The maintainance deal was with jetstar/quantas, but this is a share swap deal with Malaysian Airways.

Looked to be a duopoly forcing up prices.

    But apparently not!

  • Prices for the current sale (bargains are completely sold out now) are still a fair bit higher than last yr. I pd $266 MEL-KL rtn in Aug '10, travelled last mth. Yest, my fares came to $375 rtn (incl luggage & meals), and I was in on the dot at opening time, 2pm AEST.

So I reckon you were rite 1st call - the cheapest prices are gone now.

btw I'm a regular AA traveller too. And big diff flying this June compared to past 2 yrs - the flights out of & back to MEL were full this yr. Ex-MEL, couple who sat next to me said they were en route to London Stansted. Seems a lot of people have now "discovered" AA bargain fares - "ozbargained"!

  • Old topic, but no where else to post and not really worth a new topic, I was tooling around on their website.

Currently you can fly Melb - KL for about $300 return (it was about $240 but the way back didn't inc taxes etc so no idea what the final price would actually be).

  • With Scoot, Air Australia, Jetstar and Air Asia X all competing for the same type of passengers flying Aus-Asia, hopefully prices will be kept down.

We might not see $250 return (inc taxes, bags) again, though…..
