Need a Big Screen Monitor for Work, Not Gaming

At work I have a 3-screen setup - 2 x 22" and 1 x 43" (Dell P4317Q).

I am trying to mimic my work setup at home. I already have a couple of 22" screens and am trying to pick up a cheap large screen monitor.

I love the Dell P4317Q, it's a great screen, but I'd rather not fork out ~$1200+. Can you suggest any cheaper alternatives?

I think my only requirements are

  • Something large (>40"+)
  • Decent resolution
  • Not doing gaming, so I guess I don't need a super high-end monitor…

Any help would be appreciated. Either some suggested models or parameters (eg minimum refresh rates or resolutions etc).

EDIT: Can I use a TV? Do I need a dedicated PC monitor?

Would consider refurbished, cheaper brands etc.

Thanks!

Note: Running off a laptop dock, and I can't run >3 screens, so I really need one big screen, not multiple smaller ones.

    Something large (>40"+)

    That’s called a TV.

I wouldn't use a TV as a monitor as the DPI is different.

    • Yeah, I was skeptical.

There has to be a reason monitors cost more than TVs.

Otherwise, this would be a simple (and much cheaper) exercise.

      • I used to as monitor for a long time, bigger screen save your eyes. And you don't gaming 60hz is enough

    LG 43UD79-B $699 or $689 @ Scorptech or Kogan

Philips 436M6VBRAB @ $798 + $100 Cashback Officeworks, price beat it with Shopping Express to get $740 possibly.

    • Will look into these two, thanks.

About $500 cheaper than Dell, cheers!

    • HA! I have been scouring ebay and gumtree for a month.

This one on ebay has been teasing me the whole time. I actually have some work trips and holidays in Syd coming up, but think that might be a bit big for my luggage and/or CBF picking it up and posting it interstate myself.

        Road trip!

  • If you can handle HD at 32" then you can pick up a monitor for about $200. I find they are fine but would prefer a widescreen one now.

That should be easy then.. just spend more time on the loo using OzBargain.

    • Ask if you can borrow one from work.

  • Your work must be a flight simulator!

I have a lot of info I need to see at one time.

I used to have six screens, which I was very happy with. If anything, I still had to Alt-Tab a bit.

But then we got switched from desktops to laptops, which saw 6 screens become 3. Laptop sounds nice, but my role is 99.9% based at my desk.

My IT dept has a history of denying us upgrades we ask for but in return picking the only fragments that are running smoothly and then changing those. Pretty sure head of IT has a poster on his wall that says "If it ain't broke, FIX IT!"

I have a philips bdm4350uc and it's great. One large screen is so much better than two smaller ones. It's so good for visualising excel, maps, large file directories, etc. It's quite reflective so I wouldn't recommend for a bright room.

The pixel density is of course better than a full hd 22" so it's very sharp but not too small.

    • Looks like we have a winner. I may or may not have spotted that on my own.

Thanks 1234! Btw, your username is amazing, I have the same combination on my luggage….

      • Lol, you cracked my password.
