Who's doing the best Price/KG on Smoked Leg Hams this Year

Need to buy a smoked leg Ham for Xmas. Last year Woolworth were selling them @$7.00/kg with $10 off the price. This year looks like prices have gone up to around $9/kg so help me finding a good Ham at a reasonable price around Brisbane.

              • @chrisie: I see, thanks. Does the white vinegar spoil the taste?

@Bad Company: No Just keeps the mold etc away. Don't drown it just give it a rub first off then now and again.

@chrisie: You can use a Ham bag instead if you like. They usually have a slightly thicker material with a draw string. I soak the bag every few days in a weak mix of white vinegar and water and wring it out instead of applying vinegar directly to the ham. I don't want to seem like a know it all but i have just retired as a butcher for 44 years and this is the advice we always give.

                • @gazzathegreat: Yes that also works well.
I find when I first take the plastic rap off if I give it a good wipe down with vinegar it cleans most of the gunk, slime, blood, etc you start with a nice clean ham.

More on this thread about Veganism than there is on the dollar value of ham. I mean some off topic conversation can be interesting, but this is akin to walking into Coles/Woolies and being abused by book thumping religous nutters who insist you'll burn in their version of hell if you don't do what they say.

    • yes agree - maybe its climate change that brings them out.

    • Doesn't matter really, OP got their answer on page 1.
Good thing about the internet is we can just move stop reading and move to another thread/site.

  • What's the best way to prepare/cook a leg of ham if I don't have a smoker or BBQ? Anyone got any good recipes? I've always been a chicken/turkey eater at Xmas and have never bought a leg of ham before.

You would of course steam your ham

Every Monday after 5-6pm you can Google up Coles and Woolworths up coming catalougles commencing on Wednesday,if you are lucky enough to have both stores near you you can then see which store is giving the best deal,as there a lot of different flavoured hams I would have a look at the whole hams then the one you choose go over to the deli and ash for a taste if they have the same ham sliced,if you do not like the taste then you pick another, next Wednesday is Xmas and you can google both store catalouges, later this week all their products should be reduced probably up to the next weekend, cheers and a very SAFE and Merry Xmas
    and New Year,cheers

    • Thanks
Got one at Coles $9.00/kg less $10 worked out at $7.50/kg
