Who's doing the best Price/KG on Smoked Leg Hams this Year

Need to buy a smoked leg Ham for Xmas. Last year Woolworth were selling them @$7.00/kg with $10 off the price. This year looks like prices have gone up to around $9/kg so help me finding a good Ham at a reasonable price around Brisbane.

Which ever doesn’t have swine flue.

Correct, op probably needs to buy 2. Mmmmm delicious ham.

      • -6

How about you do some due diligence before you keep spreading crap over the internet?

        • Is ham not delicious?

        • +10

How about you keep your condescending rants to yourself? I have no issues with plant based diets but you are the worst kind of advocate for it and while you might win a few internet debates, you will instigate none of the change you hope to.

          • -4

            @spiff:

I have no issues with plant based diets

You have no issues with people not killing innocent animals for no essential reason? How big of you!

Lemme guess, you want me to return the favour and have no issues with people gratuitously killing innocent animals?

            • +2

@afoveht: How's your lack of B12 going? Surely if humans were designed to eat a vegan diet they wouldn't need so much of it. Surely we would have a longer digestive system as well? Or is this one of the cases lately where we ignore biology?

              • @brendanm: Are you sure you aren't Pete Evans?

                • @afoveht: Just gave you some things above. Has nothing to do with Pete Evans, or paleo. Simple biology. How do you get your B12? From supplements? Did you get the supplements off a tree?

Do you not care about the organisms that died to give you b12.?

                  • @brendanm: If you think B12 is only in meat and dairy best not to comment.

                  • @brendanm: Still waiting for the smoking gun. C'mon, destroy me.

Yes, I get my B12 from a sup.

So anyway, yeah, care to show me those links before we move to your other tangents?

                    • +2

@afoveht: So if a pharmaceutical company wasn't grinding up microorganisms (you don't seem to care about killing those?), you would be b12 deficient. Therefore, humans need meat to get the nutrients they need.

                      • @brendanm: Microorganisms are not sentient beings, nor meat.

What other absurdities you wanna throw my way?

                        • +3

@afoveht: Eggs aren't sentient beings last time I checked.

Also not absurd, you cannot get all the nutrients you need naturally.

                          • @brendanm: They come from a sentient beings vagina-arsehole.

Keep em coming. Here, I'll save you some time

                            • +3

@afoveht: Who cares what it comes from? You realise chickens lay eggs right? It isn't hurting them.

Edit - pretty lazy bingo. As I've said to you, I have no issue with veganism, simply with you commenting on ops question pushing your agenda.

                              • @brendanm: You probably don't think young roosters are macerated at a day old and the hens slaughtered at 2 years old, and even though I could show you sources you'd tell me your have your own, so I won't.

                                • +2

@afoveht: No I believe that they are. Not all of them are however. What if I'm eating eggs from my own hens that are living a joyful life in my backyard, with no macerating occuring?

                                  • @brendanm: Yes, your hens were born of hens that defy nature and produce 100% female offspring, hence no young roosters needed to be macerated or otherwise disposed of before you got them. And you only ever eat those eggs, ever. This is from the same source you still refuse to show me that says we need meat to survive.

                                    • @afoveht: Lol, so even people who do the right thing are evil because something bad happened at some point in the past.

I already did, how you getting that b12?

                                      • -1

                                        @brendanm:

I already did, how you getting that b12?

I answer your questions. , would be nice if you answer mine..

C'mon, I will never utter another thing about veganism on this website again, except to tell people how deadly it is - please even just one source…

                                        • @afoveht: I've never said it's deadly. I've never said it's bad. I know great people who are vegans.

I've given a source above that days people need b12, and a vegan diet can't provide this. Ergo, we need to eat meat/dairy/eggs.

                                          • -1

@brendanm: I get B12 from a sup, I don't eat animal products, ergo you still haven't provided a source that insists humans need meat.

How about you come back when you do.

                                            • +3

@afoveht: You are missing the point. If humans were meant to eat a vegan diet, you wouldn't need a supplement. I don't need any supplements, as I have a varied diet.

Being able to do something doesn't mean it's the way it was designed. I can use a claw hammer to eat my cereal in the morning, doesn't mean that's what I should do.

                                              • -1

@brendanm: You can run to work and not use a car, you can give in to illness and not take medication, you can sleep in a cave and not in a warm bed.

You still need to give me a source if you want to remain at all credible - which you currently aren't.

                                                • @afoveht: What does that have to do with the price of bread. The human body is designed to need b12. Vegan diets don't provide B12, ergo a vegan diet is not natural. You have to get your b12 artificially in a pill or as an additive.

                                                  • -1

                                                    @brendanm: Designed by whom?

All your food is not "natural." You think in nature cows produce 8000litres of milk every year? Chickens grow to massive weight in 40 days? Wheat grows in large crops? Apples are big and shiny and without insects infesting them?

You still need to give me a source else you are just a liar.

                      • @brendanm: What bs I havnt eaten meat for 30 years and now 56, health is perfect never been in hospital since tonsillitis as a kid. Did iron man triathlons and still surf most days.

                        • @[Deactivated]: You eat eggs? Drink milk?

                          • @brendanm: Milk in 2 coffees a day, the occasional scramble eggs and if used in a dish. I don’t go looking for them though.

                            • +1

@[Deactivated]: That's where you get your B12. Only small amounts required, but it is required. As I've said, nothing against vegetarians/vegans, if you can do it, good on you.

                              • @brendanm: You sound like my parents in their 70’s, they think iron only comes from red meat.

                                • @[Deactivated]: It's literally a fact. Even thevofa admits it. You know that iron from plants and iron from animals are two different types right? One is absorbed much more readily than the other.

                                  • @brendanm: You know that red meat is a cause of bowel cancer right? Hope you are buying organic.

              • @brendanm: The vegans that I know (not the obnoxious kind) take a supplement for this.

            • @afoveht: Not everyone is vego because of killing animals you know, I havn’t eaten red meat/chicken for 30 years, I don’t like the taste no other reason. As time has gone on though the use of pesticides and added hormones Are a added bonus :)

                @[Deactivated]:

Not everyone is vego because of killing animals you know,

I know, vegetarians love killing particular animals for milk and eggs. Just another form of animal consumption really.

                • @afoveht: How is having milk and eggs killing a a animal, they stay alive right? I once drowned a calf that was injured to save a vet bill, and I eat fish, guess I am a killier vego lol.

                  • -1

@[Deactivated]: Spend 5 minutes on YouTube looking for egg and dairy cruelty if you are actually interested.

                    • @afoveht: Animal cruelty as far as food goes doesn’t worry me, the main reason I can’t go vegan is I need milk for coffee, have tried all the other alternatives and hate them.
I did a month earlier this year and lost 4kg, good way to thin down.

It's bigger than many of the other excuses I've heard, and much less disingenuous, (eg see brendanm's comment I linked above) so congratulations I guess.

@afoveht: Says vegans don’t attack normal people who eat meat.
Says it’s the other way around.
Proceeds to bombard a ham thread with comments about how normal people who eat meat are terrible people for contributing to the death of many animals.

Acts like vegans don’t contribute to the death of animals.
Never brings up the fact that many small rodents, kangaroos, bugs etc are killed due to crop protection of their own food.

                          Says they’re not religious.
Is part of the trendiest religious cult in the western world.

                          Parents must be so proud…

                  • @[Deactivated]: To have milk the cows are pregnant, then they turn the calves into veal. Eggs are a chicken just waiting to be created.

                    • @brendanm: Eggs are a chicken waiting to be created? Lol

                      • @greater mimic: Sorry that was sarcasm if it wasn't obvious.

                        • @brendanm: It's not obvious because your first sentence is true. Now I'm just confused lol

                          • @greater mimic: I was just giving the reasons why vegans won't eat eggs or drink milk. Chicken waiting to be created was the best I could come up with sorry

                            • @brendanm: Hahaha just fyi the chicken eggs people buy at supermarkets don't hatch into chicks if you don't eat them

                              • @greater mimic: Read my other posts for context mate. I don't think they are going to, certain other people do, it's tongue in cheek

                                • @brendanm: Uhh no one thinks this… you're quite clueless so I'm going to stop replying…

                                  • @greater mimic: You're quite clueless. Try reading thevofas posts mate. It's exactly what he thinks and was directed at him. I'll give you a gold star today for trying though. ⭐

                                    • @brendanm: Omg thevofa doesn't eat eggs in order to not eat baby chickens? Hahaha damn dude

                    • +2

@brendanm: Eggs are more like a period wrapped up in its own neat little package.
                      Mighty tasty though.

            • +3

@afoveht: I don't care what you do or don't have issues with. You're the type of person that gives vegans a bad reputation. The kind of person that gets made fun of. The reason why many people will refuse to try to go plant based. The kind of person that thinks they're so morally superior because of a choice of diet. But you keep blabbing on and assume anyone that doesn't already agree with you, will actually take note.

The reason why many people will refuse to try to go plant based.

"I'ma go kill some extra animals because some random dude on the internet said I shouldn't and other things I don't like."

                • +3

@afoveht: That’s the only accurate statement you’ve ever made here. I do kill extra animals because of your presence here. I’m doing it as a personal favour to you, as I know how much you get off on thinking about animal abuse, so I keep up the demand for it.
Example: my cat owns a collection of rabbit fur toys because of the ridiculous comments you make here. When you show up on a meat thread to deliberately get triggered, I click that buy it now button on eBay for cheap Chinese rabbit fur toys.

I’m sure if my cat could talk, he would thank you.

    • +1

You don't actually need to be Vegan either.

    • Slightly random question but I read your discussion thread below:

Do you take issue with people keeping like 4-5 chickens in their back yard (mostly as pets), with a big cage (just to keep them safe from cats, etc) and also let out to roam the entire yard daily while supervised, but also collecting and eating eggs which the chickens lay?

(This is also assuming that other than eating these eggs, they are effectively vegans).

      • +2

See above, roosters were killed in the past so you could have these hens, therefore you are an evil murderer simply for having them.

  • +2

If you want Australian leg ham.. IGA $8kg.
Got one last week, all good.

    • Thanks will have a look.
The ham I inject it with flavour etc and then smoke it in my smoker for 3-4 hrs. Its easier than curing it from scratch.

      • +1

Pickled pork, soak in jam, pineapple juice ect over night then smoke.

        • Butter , Maple Syrup , Bundy Rum heated up then injected into ham and resmoked.

          • @chrisie: Does the bundy still have that punchy flavor? Also what chip as you using :)

            • @Slippery Fish: Bundy rum gives it a nice caramely type mellow flavour. I use chunks of wood in the pan not chips as they last longer . Use any good hardwood or fruit wood . Rosewood that I get from the Tafe College they use in wood working is good . Just make sure it has not been treated just kiln dried.

          • +2

@chrisie: Did someone say rum ham?

    • +4

If you live in Sydney just leave it out overnight and it'll be naturally smoked by morning.

  • +2

Bought Aldi one for mum at $8 a kg less $10 from Aldi.

Will be trying christies method and doing a pickled pork one :)

    • I'll have a look at Aldi Thanks

    • +1

Also do a nice Pastrami in the smoker using Corned Beef. I find the Woolworth corned beef has got a better corned flavour than the Aldi.

      • Nice tip. What's your method I've never done pastrami

      • I second you on the WoolWorth's Corned Beef. Typically excellent flavour and quality.

  • +2

Free at Costco. You just need several disguises and some skillful maneuvering when (re)raiding the samples.

    • I'm into taste testing.

  • -1

    Best price? Dunno.

    Best ham? Bertocchi.

    • Lol

  • I highly recommend getting this at $8 per kg.

    https://www.woolworths.com.au/shop/productdetails/66904/wool…

    • Thanks but I was after a Leg Ham while this one is a Shoulder Ham

      • Shoulder ham is just the front leg ham………I got this because I wanted something small yet has what you want in a traditional ham. So muscle, fat, skin etc. Without the bones!

        • Shoulder Hams have a different taste and texture . They tend to be priced a lot lower than leg hams although I am not saying they don't taste great.

          • @chrisie: I know rear legs are the best but there's no way our family can consume one before it goes bad.

By the way, we just put the ham in the fridge. Are we doing it wrong?

            • +2

@Bad Company: We just take it out of the plastic rap wipe it down with a cloth dipped in white vinager then put into a pillow case into the fridge. Find it keeps a lot longer. You can repeat the wipe with white vinager every now and then.
