Horrible Reception with Boost Mobile

So I've been with Lebara in the past and 3 weeks ago, ported to Boost, no complaints about the porting, took 20 mins.

The 4 sims that were ported all get horrible reception and call dropouts, I'll just list the 4 mobiles with their respective signal db;

Nokia 8.1 -115db
Samsung Galaxy S7 -108db
Xiaomi MiA1 -115db (no band 28)
Xiaomi MiA2 -115db (no band 28)

I'm about 20kms from the Melbourne CBD, so not remote at all.

Just wondering what phones do people here use with Boost? and what's the signal quality like?

Boost is Telstra.. check telstra coverage

    • Yeah I know, that's why I'm perplexed that I'm getting bad reception. I'm in a 4g area, hell even 5g is available.

      • Is your phone turned on. Stupid question you may think but have to ask.

        • Yes its on.

Owned by Telstra does not mean it's Telstra. It isn't the same network performance as Telstra customers.

      • There's no difference at all for 4GX anymore, in coverage or speed. I get the full Telstra performance and several hundred MB/s downloads, same as Telstra. With another device on Telstra to compare I can say it's the same in any places I go, and when travelling outside the capital there are still heaps of places it drops out where other providers have signal (and vice versa). Telstra (directly) is the only one I've had drop out multiple times including for several hours in the CBD in the past few years though. I don't think they have kept up with their growth.

There's no 5G available on Boost, they've moved that to be the differentiator from 4GX (along with some extra services such as number sharing for smart watches etc). There's a bunch of old (or just plain wrong) info floating about saying Boost doesn't use 4GX (and is capped to 100mb/s), but I've run actual tests and can verify that it does, (and it isn't capped).

Telstra also doesn't own boost, even though they do the billing for them.

  • Turn on WiFi calling

    • Its already on, it works intermittently, it'll work for 3 hrs, then nothing for a while, then 18 hrs, then nothing, Its weird. But what about when there is no wifi?

What other phones do people have?

Isn't this just a Vodafone (Lebara) vs Telstra (Boost) coverage/reception thing for your area OP?

    • +2

Sounds like it, and voda is better in some areas and less so in some others.

I think, generally speaking, Telstra is better if regional coverage is required. If not, Telstra is overrated.

      • Hoping to see a new deal from a Vodafone MVNO that's competitive to Boost $150 ($125) plan for the year, no-way am I paying $180 that Lebara has currently.

        • You mean, $135 boost? I can’t find $125 anywhere

          • @cloudy: Nope $125, it was something like $125.80 but I just rounded down. It was during that ebay 15% off time, and if you bought it in-store, it was 20% off.

Its some obscure store in the city, at the Southern Cross train-station.

That's the reason I went with Boost, it works out to just more than $10 per month.

            • @GTR12: good buy, I haven't seen it on ozbargain for anything less than 135.

I doubt you will find any other deal for 125, nothing on ozbargain I've seen is at that price lately.

We got Boost for sometime now…it has been wonderful !

    • What phone?

  • Did you just port today? For unknown reasons boost has a slight delay before they activate VOLTE when you port in so you'll drop down to 3g for calls for a day or so.

    • 3 weeks ago, the porting went perfect, of all the 4 phones that ported, the longest was 20 mins. All had VOLTE and VOWIFI in 3 hrs of porting.

  • 8km from CBD in Melbourne, I have much better coverage on Voda/Optus than Telstra… I just make sure I have services with all three :D

  • I'm not in Melbourne but have a hybrid note10+ with boost and Telstra, both on band28 atm.

    • Cheers, 1 phone so far, anyone else?

  • I'm on Catch and for the past month the 4g has been pretty crappy as well. Maybe the heatwave is fritzing the towers lol

  • I'm in Syd, about 30km west of CBD which is still metro by Sydney standards. At my house vodafone gets full bars whereas telstra only gets 1-2 bars. Everywhere else I travel it's the opposite situation. That's probably what's happening in your case too.

Time to port out of boost and any other telstra MVNO!

  • Sydney South - boost reception is worse than voda/optus

  • On Boost Mobile here, ported from Vodafone. I find the reception horrible with LOTS of black spots.

  • I reckon my issue is similar to the one mentioned by OP except that it worked well until recently. If anyone has found some solution, please do share. My post: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/534021
