Is The i7-9700K a Good Buy? Should I Wait for Boxing Day?

Currently have an i5-8400 but with a z370 board and been itching to get something to OC and bit more power for video editing etc.

Currently the I7-9700KF is $519 at MSY but is it worth waiting for Boxing day sales? I don't remember seeing many CPU discounts at retailers last year. Also is this a decent option or worth it to go the 9700K for about $40 more?

  • If you're running a discrete GPU and on a budget then just get the KF version. Boxing day is only like 4 days away so I suppose you can wait and see if there are sales but don't hold your breath.

Specifically do NOT get the KF version if you want to edit videos.

      • Why's that? I thought only difference was no iGPU

  • Unfortunately the best timing to buy any computer component is over (black friday, cyber monday period). All the good stuff are gone, hopefully you will find what you want at a more reasonable price later on boxing day.

At $519, I'd spend the extra and get a 9900K/KF.

For video editing, depends what you use. If you're using Premiere, then don't go with the KF versions because you can use the iGPU for Quicksync. If you're using something else, likely it won't use the iGPU, so just get the KF.

    • Oh thanks using Premiere didn't know that. Not doing any serious stuff though very amateur haha

  • How much Time does one Lose,
    eg, 'KF vs 'K…?

If one is Very Patient, how
much longer would using an i5-
    based "refurbished" Dell box

…in each case, to edit an
    18-min video, 720p f YouTube?

    Thanks

whats wrong with i5- 8400, still a beast of a processor for it's time/price. 6 cores is decent. I have the same but havn't seen any worthwhile discounts on 9700k given ryzen is out, it's worth like $350

Unfortunately not. It's fine for gaming or general PC use, but it's underpowered for more complex things. I have an 8400 as my gaming system and it chugs on doing real work (statistical analysis for me). CPU utilisation pegged at 100%, can't do anything else whilst it's running. Both my 2700X and 3900X systems are far better, CPU pegged around 70 - 80% and plenty usable when things are running in the background.

  • yeh i think cree is right. if youre doing heaps of editing and u got some cash to spend, maybe its worth getting but if its just short amateur clips im not so sure its worth it. outside of video editing, i dont think the upgrade is gonna produce any noticeable improvements.

If you mainly just wanna overclock do you need it to be an i7? technically u just want a K version right? i'd have a look around at which chip is best at overclocking and even consider some i5's and/or older generations in your shortlist.
