  • How much is the batteries? Any idea

    • It runs on AAA batteries. Price depends on normal or rechargable.

    • I takes 3 AAA batteries per handheld. I used the cheaper Kmart ones ($5 for 24). These worked for little more than 2 half days. Rechargeable batteries can be used to charge within it and to avoid opening to replace the batteries.

  • Can I use these legally in the USA?

    • Apparently not from what I heard.

  • Are these actually any good?

    • Fairly good, it worked well at least for 800 meters in residential area accross 2 streets

The last 'good' portable i had from Uniden was the UH-042XR.
It seems they get worse as every new model comes along.

Simple things like AA instead of AAA batteries and not having the silly 'roger' beeps etc.. were a nice touch.
It would cost them nothing to go back that way.

Age old question ppl ask, range.

The truly honest answer (rather than the '3km' or whatever the box says).
Range will be 50m - 100Km depending on location and environment.
Inside one house to inside another house the range will be fairly limited, even as little as 50-100m.
Outdoors with hilly terrain you'll probably get over short near hills, but fail to get over larger/farther hills, let's say 1km roughly
Outdoors with mildly undulating terrain, ~ 3-5Km
    Line of site, 10-20Km
Line of site at moderate to high elevation in summer evening ~ 50 - 100Km or possibly more (due to phenomena known as tropospheric ducting).

Not legal anywhere except for Aus and NZ.
Read the manual, learn how repeaters work!
Avoid using channels 31-38 and 71-78 (repeater inputs for chans 1-8 and 41-48) you may inadvertently be transmitting into the input of a repeater without realising it.

  • I'd be curious to know how much more "noise" the sale of these handhelds brings to the airwaves for those that use them for trucking etc..

Obviously their transmission range is very limited but im sure it has some impact

Fairly minimal given the range. They really are designed as cool kids toys and most parents will move their kids off the trucking channels fairly quickly once they hear the language commonly used on there

  • My one stopped working for some reason.
    Didn’t even used them much.
