Is this a good price? Looking for a cheap PC.

hey guys, just looking for a cheap PC for my sister. she won't be doing much other than firefox, word, reading pdfs and watching the occasional HD bluray movie.

i came across this for $400:

http://www.officeworks.com.au/retail/products/Technology/Com…

i was in store today and i must say it looks good.

it already has Win7 and Office built in and those two alone are $250 even at student rates. the only problem is this PC only contains Office 'starter' and it has limited functionality in Word. she'll need to include bibliographies/tables etc and this version won't allow it. is it possible to buy Word by itself?

is there anything else out there?

thanks

  • but yah, she just needs word, really. otherwise this one would be perfect.

Officeworks sells Office 2010 (Home and Student) for relatively cheap.

It's $98 for the key card version (you download from the Microsoft site, and use the key card to activate it.

    Officeworks link

If you or your sister has gone to university before, and have access to a .edu email address, then you are also eligible for a $99 Office Professional Academic license.

Or if you are cheap, just use Libre Office.. It's not as fully featured as Office, and the menus may take getting used to but at least it's free.

Also that computer won't take Blu-Rays, it doesn't have BD drive. You should also stick in a Radeon 5450 if you want it to be able to handle 1080p video smoothly.

    • ok rhanks scrimshaw.

at first i thought i'd build her one, but when you throw all the hardware together it works out cheaper to get something like this.

i wouldn't mind even just getting her a tower. anyone know of a cheaper deal?

  • is there anything else out there?

    Whereabouts do you live?

I'm sure there are some PC stores that can build a PC for you

However for $400 that's pretty good

It's relatively pedestrian. Don't know a good mate (like myself) who can build you one?

  • There's been better spec'd i3 laptops on here of late for that kind of money (after cashbacks) which would represent much better value for money IMHO! :)

  • yah, i was thinking of getting a laptop, but then i'd still need to connect a screen up.

    that's why this was appealing.

I would get a Dell desktop instead with one of the 24" monitor deals posted here recently.

    http://www.dell.com/au/business/p/vostro-desktops

There should also be some coupon code floatig around for Dell desktops.

    • this looks good, thanks.

are there any monitor deals going atm? is there a forum here for dell coupon codes?

  • Try this build from IT Estate.

You can also take advantage of the ISIC card student deal for very cheap Windows 7 and Office 2010 licenses. You must be a registerd University or TAFE student for this deal.

So in total, it will cost between $480 to $448, depending on whether you applied for student discounts.

    • ok thanks mate.

i don't think my uni is linked with them. do you have a list of uni's that are linked with ISIC?

i know MS offer a copy of Win7 Pro for $120 on their site for students. it was $50 a little while ago…
