    Vegans

    • +2

100% organic Vegans, to be precise!

    • +1

      That explains the taste.

      • Salty?

        • unwashed with the smell of belly button lint

  • +3

Dead plants that are leftover after making a Whopper.

  • +21

Varies a lot based on the product.

The vast majority of vegan patties would contain primarily soy beans, or the extracted proteins.

Healthier variants might have more whole foods like chickpeas, lentils and rice.

From a structure perspective they almost always have a bean as the base and then some grains. Then maybe nuts for texture and more of the flavour from other vegetables or spices.

Below are the ingredients for the Hungry Jack's Rebel Whopper patty, primarily soy:

Rebel Patty (Water, Soy Protein, Vegetable Oil, Thickeners (461, 1442) Flavours (Including
Glutamic Acid (620)), Dextrose, Caramel Colour (150c), Antioxidants (300, 307), Smoke
    Flavour)

Whereas the Hungry Jack's veggie patty is at least mostly vegetables:

Veggie Patty (Vegetables (58%) (Carrots, Peas, Corn, Potato, Capsicum), Seasoning (Rice
Flour, Dehydrated Vegetables, Wheat Flour, Soy Protein, Salt, Thickeners (415, 464),
Hydrolysed Vegetable Protein (Maize), Yeast Extract, Flavour Enhancer (635), Herb &
Spice Extracts, Colour (100)), Water, Canola Oil)

    • +5

Other interesting facts about the Rebel Whopper are that "vegetable oil" is almost always palm oil, which is 7% saturated fat. The rebel patty is cooked on the same grill as the beef burgers, so it picks up a lot of animal fat and is not really vegan. The Rebel Whopper has slightly more calories than the regular Whopper, and a lot more salt.

      • +1

also, that "vegetable oil" is in most processed food

      • +2

thanks, very informative. More people should know this

      • +5

The grill they use is a rotating conveyor belt, the amount of oil left over from the previous patty would be tiny.

        • Thanks for that info. I read about the grill in a pamphlet in-store. I can't find it online, but from memory they just called it a grill.

      • +3

Yes! It is an interesting fact. But it's not a fact about the rebel whopper. The veggie patty does not contain palm oil, it uses [sunflower + coconut oil] (https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.businessinsider.com.au/v2fo…)

Rebel whopper is not a vegan burger and was never designed to be, it uses regular mayo as well.

The beef patties however, do contain palm oil

        • -1

That's a great link. Though, I would not put it past them to not include palm oil as they talk in generalisations with vague language, (eg. "mostly") and they're not talking about the rebel whopper patty specifically.

Just comparing palm vs coconut oil, palm is 49% saturated fat vs coconut's 87% saturated fat. Scary. (If you're getting on in years like me).

Adding palm oil to a meat patty seems like an unnecessary evil, which is the worst kind of evil.

    • and are normally a whole lot worse for your health…
      https://www.sbs.com.au/news/the-feed/just-because-it-s-plant…

      • +3

        *worse than real vegetables.

Same as any other fast food.

    • -4

The vast majority of vegan patties would contain primarily soy beans,

So primarily xenoestrogens and endocrine disruptors then? Well that's a much healthier alternative than protein and fat /sarcasm.

      • +5

        Yep. It is.
        https://www.hsph.harvard.edu/nutritionsource/soy/
TL;DR "Soy is a nutrient-dense source of protein that can safely be consumed several times a week, and is likely to provide health benefits—especially when eaten as an alternative to red and processed meat."

        • +1

But how does one justify a smugness over someone else's food preference without a bogeyman to prove them all idiots???

        • -2

Soy => estrogen is a no no for men

          • +2

@frewer: I’ll back Harvard over unsourced internet conspiracy theories.

Cardboard from the leftover boxes at bunnings.

  • +3

Processed plant based food. If you want to go healthy focus on Whole Food, Plant Based. Not vegan processed foods.

  • +9

    Vegan cows.

  • +10

saw dust and lots of salt

  • +1

    A cloned animal =)

    • Lab grown meat is an interesting one. If there was no animal harm in the process of making that burger would vegan still eat it?

      • +1

Fake meat require controlled conditions like temperature and humidity conditioning. Space conditioning releases tons and tons of CO2.

        • +2

          That's OK, CO2 doesn't have any feelings

  • +8

I cant wait for the day that scientists confirm that plants feel pain.

    • -1
      • Guess all the “breatharians” are going to get outraged now and get us to convert to consuming only light and air

        • I can't wait for the day that scientists confirm that light and air feel pain.

        • -1

          U alrite, m8? Who hurt u?

          • +1

@jetblack: Probably not a vegan, they don't have the strength to hurt anyone.

    • Obviously it's about reducing the level of cruelty applied to living creatures. Plants feeling pain won't change how messed up the meat industry can be.

    • +2

Can't wait for the day that scientists find no evidence of nerve endings or intelligent life in plants that show they feel pain.

      Oh wait.

    • If you currently don’t feel guilt, what’s the difference?

  • +10

    Soylent green.

  • +8

    Righteousness

  • +2

Lol this just popped up on my youtube homepage

    https://www.youtube.com/post/UgwgCNd0rPFkBptlhMV4AaABCQ

"The impossible whopper has 44 mg of estrogen and the whopper has 2.5 ng of estrogen. Now let me refresh your metric system. There are 1 million nanograms (ng) in one milligram (mg). That means an impossible whopper has 18 million times as much estrogen as a regular whopper."

    • +3

So, eating a lot of these vegan burgers will shrink one's balls? lol

      • +6

        Yes.
        And watch your tits grow.

        Girls love them.

        • +4

I've seen a lot of men with boobs at Hungry Jack's, they were all getting the meat burgers though.

      • +4

You're probably not concerned about health if you eat a lot of any type of burger, let alone enough veggie burgers to start shrinking testes or growing breasts…

        • I'd rather die than have shrunken balls :)

          • @bobbified: No you wouldn’t.

            • @Randolph Duke: It’s a common misconception one can live without limits and then go out in a blaze of glory. Reality, however, is that most of the population go through prolonged debilitating illness before finally succumbing. During those not so great moments, reflection and regret sinks in.

    • Wow. My HRT patch contains 50 micrograms estrogen.

  • +3

The plant based burgers at Grilled are good. Has the right taste and the patty texture is like meat.

    • -1

the patty texture is like meat

      Lol.

      • Its a good alternative if you want a plant based version. I still love the Moroccan Lamb. The plant versions are getting better.

        • +3

Pepsi doesn’t taste like Coca-Cola. Tofu doesn’t taste like red meat no matter how hard they try.

Btw Why are they trying make tofu look and taste like animals?

          • +3

@whooah1979: Because people don't go vegetarian /vegan over the taste and they're a much more environmentally friendly option, so if meat eaters can be convinced they're decent tasting then it's worth trying.. It doesn't even necessarily need to taste exactly like meat, but trying to get meat eaters to try a burger that isn't meant to taste like meat hasn't worked in the past, at least these have a curiosity factor.

            • @jetblack: There are great tasting vegetarian/vegan dishes. Making fake meat is stupid and lazy, and generally just a bunch of crap mixed with salt.

              • @brendanm: I was responding to the person who asked why people are 'trying to make tofu taste like animals'. It's a really common question that a lot of people don't get, and that's fine, but there's perfectly good reasons why.
Whether it's good in taste, health, or good compared to other alternatives is another argument completely.
                Eat whatever you want ¯_(ツ)_/¯

                • @jetblack: It's simply that there are better vegan/vegetarian options that haven't been processed to the nth degree and covered in salt. Sort of negates any health benefits.

          • @whooah1979:

Why are they trying make tofu look and taste like animals?

because they are not necessary aimed at vegans. Population and consumption is increasing, unpolluted resources and grazing earth aren’t. Like it or not, your and your descendants’ future is more plant-based.

    • +1

except that the grilled fake ones aren`t better for you…as they have 3160kj,41.1G fat and 1110mg of sodium (vs 2850kj, 31.3G fat and 1140mg of sodium..

      • +6

Fats aren't inherently bad, and both the energy density and sodium content aren't wildly different (~10% and 3% more). If you're eating burgers in the first place, you're not doing it for health reasons, but the comparison you're making doesn't have any appreciable real-world difference to the average person consuming in moderation.

        • -2

          consuming in moderation.

ha ha ha. eating at fast food places is a reflection of their general eating habits

  • -4

Should not be called burgers what a joke plant based trying to look and taste like meat
Hope the feds bring in a law to stop calling them meat patties(plant based)
what next vegan cows.sheep.butter.bread,vegan motor cars what a laugh.

    • +8

      Who cares?

    • +4

Wow, some people need to stress over stuff less

Especially things like a vegetarian burger patty
How do you even get through a day….

    • +2

x2r9ypbj has seen all the new vegan options increasing in supermarkets. The vegans are coming and we are going to eat you all.

      • -5

Don't tell the looney greens and the vegan activist that the plant based patties feel the pain. Expect a large sit in Melbourne next week to protest why not a weekly protest sorry not all week have to run down to Centrelink to update my interviews and get our payments.

        • +3

          You seem a bit tense.

    • +4

Peanut butter has existed for years. You protesting that one too?

    • -2

      Ok boomer

    • I guess you don’t like almond milk either.

      I suggest revolution.

  • +3

Bucket loads of fat and salt….

  • -6

This is why I've boycotted Hungry Jacks

    • +4

      You find vegetarian alternatives offensive?

Nothing like a boycott that no one cares about to truly stick it to the man…

    • Wow, they are really going to miss you.

    • +2

      Imagine being offended by vegetables

    • +1

While your local may be feeling it if you were eating all of your meals there, they'd still make up for it with the extra sales. Their fries were already vegan, sorry if you accidentally ate vegan food there before the boycott.

All of the supermarkets are significantly increasing their range of deliberately vegetarian and vegan foods, are you boycotting them too? They've always had fruit and veg so maybe you never shopped there.

    • I have no problem eating vegetables, I do however have a problem with meat substitutes that was created to look and taste like meat.

  • Murdered organic plants that need not be disclosed of their species or origin.

  • +1

i wouldn't have thought there would be any meat in a normal whopper to start with. not that i have eaten one in 20 years.

  • +6

It does amuse me that people just come on here to chuck abuse at vegans and vegetarians. Not knowing that climate change is in part due to at least 1/3 of land cleared is to grow food (soy) for beef cattle and the other 1/3 is for cattle grazing (to make it like beef is clean and guilt free).

Even if you drive a Tesla and never fly you'll never offset the amount of green house gases from eating meat.

    IPCC Report

Sorry team meat. As much as I like to go on the "I can't live without my meat" or "it can never replace the taste of meat" like I am so kind of a winner. I'm not going to gloss over the facts. In the long term what you can't live without today is going to be a lot of pain in the near future.

    • +1

How much land will we need to grow enough plant based food to replace the meat?

      • It's impossible to replace red meat with plants.

        • +1

Well someone said that about horses before they invented the car. People are only held back by their lack of imagination.

You know it is impossible to replace donkeys with the a cart with wheels. Maybe you'll be riding a donkey to work on Monday?

Did you short Tesla too? Poor are those who live in the past.

          • @netjock: I've eaten horse meat, but never tried donkey meat. It may or may not taste the same.

There is no plant substitution for red meat.

            • @whooah1979: Okay if you believe that meat is just meat. There is no nutrition value in meat which cannot be substituted by vegetables. Just as fossil fueled cars can be substituted by electric cars.

Eating horse meat is no claim to fame. You're just an also ran. People have eaten a lot of things through history and nobody is remembered for eating great meat.

              • +2

                @netjock:

                remembered for eating great meat.

                Nor a vegetable

              • @netjock: I eat red meat with vegetables. The best of both worlds served on one plate.

                • @whooah1979: Sounds like a desperate attempt at justification.

                  • +1

@netjock: No justification needed when I enjoy eating everything on the plate.

      • -2

1/3 less obviously. Because you don't need the land to grow soy to feed the "meat". You're just being a dumb ass, smart asses google the answer.

Next you'll be telling me that meat grows on trees in the rain forest and we pick cows off the tree by cutting the tail (like fruit), climate change is all made up because satellite maps of deforestation is a lie from the left. Vladimir Putin is Jesus who helped Trump into power to save the world.

        • +4

Err… No I am not. You can't just 1:1 replace crops and yield…a football field of saffron gives you 1 pound. A football field of wheat will give you 5-6 tonnes.

I don't think you actually understand what you typed.

    • +1

people just come on here to chuck abuse at vegans and vegetarians

      Hilarious!
Vegan and vegetarians come here to attack and lecture and blame and humiliate omnivorous.

PS: Omnivorous means eating vegetables and also eating meat … just in case.

      • -1

        Okay omnivorous hero.

By the sounds of most people on this thread people are not claiming to be omnivorous heroes, just meat hero.

        • +1

Yes , only eat meat and nothing else. We probably all eat it raw too lol.
