Picked this prime lens up from Harvey Norman today, they price matched Ted's (although they were a bit reluctant).
Regular price at Ted's seems to be $249, Regular price at HN's is $348.

  I had to pay $170 used few months back (had to travel same evening so took the hit).

  Not usually cheap, only seen around $200 few times. Past few years.

    I've got both, I bought the Nikon new a few years ago for around $250 online which was pretty good at the time. They are both great lenses for the money, the Nikon feels better built where-as the Canon's feel a little dinky. The latest Canon STM version which I bought is an improvement but still not the same quality as the Nikon imo.

  It’s a terrific lens. Mine rarely, if ever, gets used nowadays though. If I don’t have the Nikon 24-70 f2.8 on to cover this focal range then it’s the Sigma 35 f1.4 ART, which is just an amazing lens (but heavy).

  Bit of a photography noob here,

  I have a D3400 with a 18-55mm kit lens. What benefits would this 50mm have over the 18-55mm?

  From my little reading, I've heard that it lets a lot more light in which is much better for not so well lit areas.

    Sharper image. Faster focus <<< these are what you cannot see from the specs.
    From the specs, your lens has f ~5.4 at 50mm, comparing to f1.8, that's 9 times less amount of light can get into your sensor (9 = (5.4/1.8)^2) (provided that you are using the same shutter speed)

    It's all about the bokeh. Lower f stops… More blurry backgrounds

    this is a fx lens, which means it's used for full frame camera. If you were to use this in your d3400, you'll have a focal length equivalent of 75mm (50*1.5 crop factor).

    that said apart from being a very sharp lens, the 1.8 aperture is very quick and will yield better bokeh then the 18-55 kits.

    However unless you're planning to leave crop sensor size, there's plenty DX lenses which can perform similar for better price.

    Good lens for people with AF motors built in to their cameras.
