Has Anyone Successfully Got Anything Free Due to Scan Errors?

I have never seen it written somewhere, but keep hearing people saying that scanning error means free product, but just the first one in case of multiple quantities.

Is that true? Has anyone actually benefited from it in the last year or two?

  • gotten heaps of free stuff over the years from coles or safeway.. even had times where it scanned wrong, told them, got it for free, came back later the same week, still scanning wrong, got it for free again.

I’ve had it happen at coles about 3 weeks ago. Gas lighter for BBQ scanned at 10.50 and should have been 7.00. I said the price was wrong. He tried to just give it to me for the lower price but I said it should be free giving their scanning policy.
The cashier walked with me to the far side of the store to eyeball the wrong ticket, which he verified and gave me the lighter for free. So it pays off sometimes to pay attention when scanning. Mind you during a big shop I don’t know how you’d ever know!

  • What if the item's advertised price is wrong but has the correct price online?

    • Depends if you bought it online or not

  • Yes I benefited from it. I got free oysters from woolies once. The tag was half priced and it scanned at full price, I went to the counter and I got it for free.

  • I got free tomatoes from woolies

  • Scanning policy is if the ticketed price is incorrect you get it for free because this was our error. There is a sign near the service desk on the wall the should have full information.

If you have multiple items the first is free and the rest are at the reduced price.

Fresh or free is when the item is not ‘fresh’ or satisfactory you should get a refund AND a replacement. This applies to fruit, veg, meat perishables etc

If in doubt call the store and let them know, then when you come in you can mention someone’s name and say that they said you get a scanning policy on that item.

    • That’s good to know about the fresh and free refund PLUS replacement. I returned some lamb shanks to Coles that we’re clearly ‘off’ by the use by date. Coles happily refunded the purchase price but didn’t offer me a free replacement. I’ll know to ask next time.

      • Yeah there’s usually a sign above the service counter, definitely pays to ask when it’s an expensive meat item

  • I got an umbrella! The person at the self checkout actually walked me over to the service desk so that I could get my refund.

  • Free roast chicken as it scanned at full price despite the discount tag on..

I have had countless items for free from both Woolies and Coles throughout the years. Sometimes you need to point it out to staff as some staff are better than others.

People saying going to the service desk to get something done. They haven't been to my Coles. It is the place of horrors.

  • No, only 3 years ago

  • Has happened to me about twice in my life.

Second time was a few months ago.
Washing powder reduced from $15 down to $7
But there was a $6 special tag on it.
    Scanned at $7

Told the self checkout girl, i asked do i get it for free, she paused for a few seconds, and said yep and waved me through

Just got 750gm cherries for free. Scanned at wrong price and the staff voided the item and gave it to me for free. Thanks Coles

Free peaches and tomatoes today at Margaret River Woolies. Both scanned higher than the advertised price per kilo. I received a combined refund of $12. Yesterday I scored a free 3-pack of Christmas paper which scanned at full price. I check my docket each shop and I would average a free item and refund in roughly one out of every three shops.

  • It does happen regularly, especially at Whoolworths

  • 4 x jocks

  • At least a couple of incorrect price scans a month at Coles. Only got a first item free once last year but for some reason I'm not bothered about it, even though I'll cross a street to pick up a 5c coin 😁
