Drama When Claiming Coupons or Discounts - ie Hidden Conditions or Person Serving Has Never Heard of The Deal

Has anyone had issues with stores refusing coupons or never even hearing of a certain deal?

My experience:

Lately I tried to use a coupon for 10% off cakes but was refused because I had to bring the entire coupon page and not just the cut out dotted little square. No where on the page does it say the entire sheet/ page must be presented. Plus, the discount only applied to large cakes and not small cakes (again not mentioned anywhere). I told them they need to change the coupon then to include these important information and only reply was the typical “sorry, I’m only doing what my boss told me to do”.

Next time I will bring the entire coupon sheet but it’s frustrating when there seems to be so many hidden catches; nek minute I’ll be told I need to be wearing a blue suit in order to claim a discount; drama is almost not worth the saving.

Have also had instances where I can get a discounts at certain stores due to membership to local community club but the retailer has never heard of the promo (potentially due to it not being mentioned in staff training?). Again, time consuming and frustrating when a retailer themselves creates or promotes a deal but claiming it is so difficult.

Happens all the time due to lack of staff training or systems. I gave up doing the good rewards system at 711 as stores couldn't work out hou to process it at checkout. You can try asking for manager, but even they are probably not informed from head office as to what to do. Not much you can do about it other than be prepared.I normally bring membership cards, print out of voucher etc.

That’s what you channel your inner Karen and go all “I want to speak to your manager” on them.

  • Price matches/beats/discounts are mostly marketing ploys, because the same store at different locations can have different policies and at the end of the day it's up to the discretion of the manager.

Mods must be asleep. Not a single capital letter in your title.

Stores offer discounts to get your business.

When I get a staff person/manager who won’t honour a discount, I just walk. They don’t want your business so why give it to them.

Unless of course they refuse because there is some valid reason. In the OP’s case It doesn’t appear to be valid.

Or the deal is good without the bonus discount. 😎

Yes, that's the simple and spot-on answer. If you spend twenty minutes arguing with them, the stress you're put under is worth more than the discount anyway. Just walk away and don't go back there… and tell them that you won't be back. In the long run, you win!

      • That's the key, you've got to make sure Head Office know, you won't be back. More so if the franchisee denies any knowledge of the offer.

I found a coupon for a massage shop once. It was for new customers only. When I went to use it the lady was adamant I'd been there before.

    • Doppelgänger?

  • Don’t go back (unless the cakes are out of this world).
If they are be careful not to get in an argument as there might be NO CAKES FOR YOU!

  • Sounds like a franchise issue. Eg, the store owner does not want to take part in the groups promotion. So they made up the weird excuse. I would send your issue to head office and they might give you a credit.

Had this trying to buy a motorcycle once. Yamaha website had a promotion that was $13,990 inc. ORC. Dealer said that they couldn't do it for under $15k. I showed them the site and the price and they just said "well, go and buy It at head office if that's the price they are offering."

Called head office while I was in the dealership. Yamaha head office called the dealership to confirm the deal and the sales manager came out and told me they had no stock of that model and that the 6 they had on display were all sold…

Maybe you should have asked if they had any stock or if the display units were sold before trying to bargain and deal….

        • Think you missed the point. I was trying to get the price advertised on Yamaha's website. I wasn't trying to "bargain and deal".

The salesman also let me know that they had "plenty in stock" before I even asked about a price.

It wasn't until after the phone call from Yamaha that they suddenly had "no stock". And I didn't even get to a pint where I was negotiating a deal.

I simply asked about the price disparity between what their price tags said and what Yamaha's website said.

I remember working at Dominos as a teen there were people who tried to claim a discount code after placing the order. Nope, can't do that, you can tell us over the phone/in person or put it in directly online, there's no excuse. They would get pissed of course, but people become such entitled little punks at Dominos so it's a drop in the ocean. One guy had to wait 5 minutes for a pizza to be remade and thought it entitled him to half his order free. Just told him not a chance, does he make over $100 per hour at his day job? Your nobody loser time isn't worth that, guy who's pathetically trying to impress his girlfriend at Dominos.

    • I'm curious, why did the pizza have to be remade?

  • lost business …

  • This has happened to me so many times over the years, and it really pisses me off. A few examples off the top of my head: Eagle Boys Pizza: "you can only get a free SMALL pizza" on a bogof voucher buying a LARGE pizza. KFC: charging me for extra bacon and cheese on BOTH burgers when using a bogof ANY burger voucher. Montezuma's: Not allowing to use 2 entertainment bogof vouchers per table (4 people). The worst was at a lolly shop when a voucher said: '25% off items at RRP only' and I spent ages getting 5 things that were all full price, and she slyly charged me full price on 4 and didn't offer a receipt. I quickly did the maths in my head and called her out and to my disgust she made up some BS that they were not RRP but already discounted because they were bulk sized bags of chocolate. A lot of the time they just shout "Conditions Apply, Conditions Apply!"…

Used to happen quite often, heck even with Hungry Jacks and their regular monthly vouchers that I would have though all their staff would be familiar with. These days if its not an online voucher that I can check myself then I just don't bother. Got so many better things to do with my life than be disappointed by tightarsed stores.

  • Domino's last effort… local store does not accept this voucher.
Domino's constant effort… click the link in the email & the code isn't valid or has expired. Compare the code that is entered to the one shown in the email & it's different.

Swapped to Pizza Hut, their garlic bread was surprisingly much more garlic tasting that Domino's & the pizza had a much more generous supply of toppings.

    • I usually find pizza hut specials are better too.

  • Next time I will bring the entire coupon sheet…

Next time I will take my business elsewhere. FTFY.

Recently I posted about Velocity not acknowledging a purchase via their own eStore.
Told they would do it manually… received message telling me they will not honour my claim.

I then noticed my post expressed on Google, so took a snap shot and sent it to Virgin Face Book, with the simple caption: Social Media.

Possibly coincidence, or maybe not, I received an email notifying they are re-viewing my claim.

This morning I receive a response informing me that about 6k of points will be applied to my Acc.

    • That's a good ending to your original thread OzHunter. Glad they pulled their finger out.
