  • Hi ADR, should I buy this or XPS15?

    • +1

XPS15 ofc if you have money … It has much bigger battery and local warranty/support.

      • Thanks Fomy!

    • +2

      you're comparing a 13" to a 15". And U processor against H processor. They're pretty different laptops.

You're looking at around $2k for the XPS 15.

If you want to compare it to a 13" laptop, I would get the HP spectre x360 i5 Ice lake FHD which right now is going for about $1400 at HN. Yeah I hate giving money to that old fart, but it's a good 2-in-1 laptop with slim bezels and local warranty for a killer price. Or Pay a little bit extra for an XPS 13, though I think the Spectre is a better deal.

EDIT: It appears that Spectre deal expired. Just wait around I say.

  • For better or worse, Touch Bar included

  • Local warranty?

  • The aspect ratio looks weird, nearly square. 😆

    • 16:9 is square?

Edit: oh, I didn't see the error. Jokes on me 😔

      • How can 1092x1080 be 16:9?

        • Well obviously it's an error, but I already acknowledged that

Only 8GB, it makes this device nearly useless.

    • +2

Yeah, a laptop needs AT LEAST 64gb of ram these days to do all of those things you do.

Chrome jokes aside - don't be a retard

      • No jokes, 8GB is barely enough in 2019, but in a few years this won't be enough because every app will be a browser.

A good laptop must have 16GB to be enough in 2021.
A good laptop for professional use needs (e.g. development, CADs etc.) to have 16GB now.

        • Strongly disagree. Ram Management combined with ssd technology makes excess ram overrated for any application the majority of laptop users use.

This isn't a professional laptop for development or cad use - and would never be chosen for such tasks. This is a great all round laptop that can dance in those things fine, plays games adequately, and perform above average user use with ease.

At this price, it's a great laptop

          • @Salmando: I used this (previous gen) laptop for professional enterprise development and it was mostly sufficient, except for the lack of RAM. As you said, ssd at the time is very capable and CPU is way more powerful than needed.

I don't have much experience in CADs, but MX250 seems to be enough for not too complex work.

As for 8GB of RAM, I have Surface Go with 4GB and it is barely enough for 1 chrome tab, so I guess 8GB should be enough for 10-20 tabs plus a few messengers - in 2019. With all what is happening in the software industry, every 5-10 years an average app requires double amount of RAM to support the same level of functionality. 8GB of RAM was more than enough for general purpose and just enough for development in 2009, so 10 years later you need to double these values.

            • @alenpln: You might be right. 8 seems good to me now, but for the first time in my life I consider it the bare minimum ram too - usually I would claim you need double the lowest for an average computer and double again for high end, so 16 and 32… Which actually looks to be standard today.

Maybe I'm getting old. I currently have a similar laptop with better cpu being the only real difference, and it hasn't hiccuped running Maya and unreal engine at the same time, both use a chunk of ram, and I'm sure they get dumped to the ssd when I switch between them - but I'm not seeing a penalty for it.

Or maybe I just need to experience 32gb to see it

              • +1

@Salmando: You are right, With a fast enough SSD drive the side-effects of a swap file can be invisible in when switching RAM-consuming apps. It becomes really noticeable when having several screens and having these apps running concurrently.

  • Resolution: 1092X1080 ??

  • Doesn't look like there's a Touch Bar?

    • Configure to order? 😆

  • wheres the webcam

    Xiaomi = Chinese Apple ???

  • Charging

    USB 3.1 Gen 2 (up to 5Gb/s)
    3.5 mm headphone jack *1;
    HDMI 1.4 Port *1

You may what to makes changes to this one,

If no local warranty then be aware Xiaomi notebook is very hard to repair via third party due to there is no blue print can be found out side other than Xiaomi itself.

  • Plus customs fees on top since it's over $1000.

No way I'd risk that much money on something with essentially zero warranty beyond the credit card chargeback period.

  • This is a new laptop since it has comet lake, but it has an old chasis. Has only 2 USB ports and both are type A, there's no type C. And it has a full size HDMI port for some reason.

    • Full size hdmi ports are always better. They're stronger and more rigid.

  • +1

These processors are still 14nm, better to wait and buy something in the 10nm range (i-105G*)

You also likely won't need a graphics card like the MX250 when buying one of the above processors as the graphics is much improved, depending on requirements obviously!
