Officeworks Refusing in Store Price Match Boost $240/240GB SIM

Just wondering if anyone has had trouble with their local Officeworks in regards to price matching. Today I went in to price match the Boost $240/240GB Sim. There appears only one lady in the whole store (the manager) that can price match. I had to wait to speak to her. As soon as I mentioned 'Price Match' and attempted to show her the deal on my phone I was met with a grunt and a sigh.

She straight out said "We don't price match sims". I stated "Where does it say this in your policy". She didn't appear to have an answer then proceeded to tell me that it was signing up to a plan/contract with them and that Officeworks don't offer contracts (therfore no price match). I continued to reiterate that it was a prepaid service… da de da… She then brings it up on her computer, mumbling away. After 15 mins scouring through the fine print she says "this is an online offer, not something you can get from a store so no we will not be matching. Once again, I pointed out the fact Officeworks does price match online stores.

Her next point was "This is not in stock" to which I replied but it is available for click and collect at this store. She said well I need a barcode to scan and I don't have one but you can go home and order from our website. Of course I'm going to go home and pay an extra $72 by not getting the pricematch and still buying from your store aren't I? Due to a disability I do not use the phone so I cannot call the 1300 Office Number. I don't have anyone around that can so I'm just going to cut my losses and buy directly from boost.

A couple of years ago the management team at my Officeworks were great but the new manager is an absolute pain to deal with. Every time I go to price match this woman always tries to make out that it is such a hassle and try to find or make up any excuse under the sun to not price match. Last time it was because the competitor charges $15 to re-print a receipt if you lose it and OW doesn't so they can't price match. Keen to hear other peoples experiences. Has anyone got the Boost Sim Price Matched?

  • Yes.my local office works did it for me yesterday. Lovely people, i gave them a box of cadbury roses for their trouble.
It helps to be nice to them.

    • I tried to be as nice as I could but my local manager always appears to be in a bad mood or unwilling to help no matter how hard I try. I haven't tried a box of chocolates though!!

I like to be wined and dined before i'm 69'd so i aim to do that to others too.

      • You should try 1300 633 423, they will price match if eligible item. If item not eligible you should ask where is written. Pay on phone then collect from local store. I have done twice itune gift cards. ( not forget you will get additional 5% off competitor's price).
If you get sucess and choose same store tell to manager you might need some training or demotion lol.

OP Literally said in the post:

@jimbobaus: He said he went local store so he will require to arrange pick up from local store too by calling them.

    • I had them price match the 240 deal today and they beat it by 5% as advertised making it 228. Didn't need to bribe them with roses either.

  • Call (or email, fb, tweet etc) head office and complain, then go find the next closest shop and see if they play ball.

    • When I made another inquiry through FB I also let them know of my experience in store.

  • Are you buying an item though? Seems more like a service rather than an item.

    • Yes, a prepaid sim card which they stock. According to their policy it doesn't appear something that is excluded.

I once went to return unopened baby formula the next day after purchase to Woolies. The declined. I pointed out their returns policy made no such exclusion. Staff said manager said to not accept returns.

I complained on woolies Facebook message.

Manager of the store called up saying it must have been a misunderstanding and that I could go and return. Next day wife went and they called a supervisor and accepted the refund.

You have a disability that inhibits your use of a phone..and you're trying to buy a prepaid SIM..

    I kid.

Complain to head office. Im sure you'll get a positive response.

    • making calls probably.

You can do a lot more with a phone these days than ring people. SMS and data come in handy.

LOL- Why do you continue to bother with this store, as you say they have denied you before hand. Just have someone else ring the 1300 number they price match over the phone and you pay over the phone, then you can pick up in store. Or if not use online chat on the web page, explain your disability and hence inability to use phone. Or cant you use govt service for disabled people for calling.

Say hello to your friend while you are there. It already paid for so nothing she can do.

    BTW its posted today https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/509645

So many have done this before

  • I must be dumb as cos I just buy from whoever sells whatever it is I want for the cheapest.
There’s no way I would spend hours wandering the streets and shopping malls, challenging evil corporations price match policy to save 10%

    • Are you not a true Ozbargainer? The savings add up especially for large purchases. But in this instance I'm going straight for the original deal now. I did not expect it to be such a hassle to price match. I was aware of their policy and the current deal, nearby the store so thought it would be more convenient.

You're just wasting your time OP. Just buy it from the retailer who gives you the best price and be happy.

  • Nothing is going to happen if you complain. Price match is just a trick to get you into store. Might make you feel better though, so highly recommended.

  • I always call their HO to price beat over the phone. Have never had a bad experience. I was told they don't price match prepaid recharge but since this is a new sim they will price beat. You can either get it delivered for free if over $55 or click and collect at your nearest store.

With the utmost respect, and with full acknowledgement that I don't know any details of your disability (and don't require you to further discuss), may I suggest that by far the easiest solution is to find some way to contact the phone line?

Whether it be by a support service, or by speaker phone, payphone, voice to text services etc I am almost certain that they will quickly and professionally allow your pricematch if you are only able to get in contact somehow.

I had the exact same rhetoric thrown at me by OW staff about a boost sim 2 days ago, and after 5 minutes with them in person it became immediately evident that they would FIND a reason to say no. The support staff via phone were rational, professional and easy to engage. I picked up my sims from that same officeworks this morning.

It was an infuriating process for me up until the phone call, so you have my utmost sympathy - if I felt that phoning was not an option I would have been left livid as well.

    • Cheers for the thorough reply. Being on here, like everyone, I do enjoy saving a bit here and there. I tried what I could. I thought it was within my rights to request a pricematch.

As stated by others, it obviously varies by store whether they accept it. There policy appears to be one of the most open with least exclusions so I thought there shouldnt be too much drama. At the end of the day I am not desperate for the $12 saving ($240 vs $228).

If I'd have known that they werent accepting anyones request I wouldnt have tried. However, I'd seen enough posts on here to think it was worth the simple process. Thanks for sharing your experience. Happy Bargain Hunting!
