    • Your Dali's require 40-150W @ 6 ohm (I assume per channel).

      The Yamaha amp specifies

      —- 80 W per channel (6 ohms, 20 Hz-20 kHz, 0.09% THD, 2-ch driven)
      —- 115 W per channel (6 ohms, 1 kHz, 0.9% THD, 1-ch driven)
      —- 145 W per channel (6 ohms, 1 kHz, 10% THD, 1-ch driven)

So you should be fine with something like this amp.

      • IMO, these are fudged figures. More realistic figures subtract another 10W Per channel.

No. However it will still sound decent until you crank it right up. Hence for moderate loudness it is OK.
Please note, that this is an entry level receiver.
The problem is that many ppl look at the big reduction off RRP and they think its best thing since sliced bread.

Tbh, you need at least a $1500+ receiver to have a "decent" setup.
An overpowered receiver is better to drive speakers than an underpowered one as the underpowered unit is likely to blow speakers due to its lack of power (or distortion when cranked up)

      Cheers

      • Thanks for that.

What throws me off is: 20 Hz-20 kHz, 0.09% THD, 2-ch driven, 1 kHz, 0.9% THD, 1-ch driven, 1 kHz, 10% THD… I have no idea which one i should be looking at

        • +3

Your speakers have an input sensitivity of 90dB and need a powerful unit to drive it comfortably. Basically, the lower dB to drive requires a more powerful amp to power.
This Yammy will conk out when cranked.
For a $350 receiver, you can't expect it to drive a more expensive speaker setup.
I have the Klipsch Rf82ii and it states it has an input sensitivity of 98dB and I still require an additional dedicated amp to drive them well. (Rotel RB1590)

I haven noticed that some posters here want to buy this unit and then spend extra $$ for speakers as they think they've got a bargain of the century. But then the combined cost of speakers and this unit, you can get a better HT package for a little more form AV joints such as Eastwood Hifi and the like.
          Cheers

    • You will not get the best out of the Dali Zensor 7 with this amp.
Why use this level amp for Dali Zensor 7?

      • I have no idea how much power I need to drive them. Thanks for the feedback fellas, in no rush as media room still work in progress so will hold out for a higher end unit

        • Power is one thing.
But with those speakers remember: garbage in, garbage out .
What ever issues the amp has the Dalis will play it for you, they won't mask the issues. This amp does have some issues.

This is about this amp's bigger sibling (https://www.whathifi.com/yamaha/rx-v585/review) :
"The amp lets itself down with seriously hard edges to the overall sound. Leaving the amp playing for another couple of days does little to relieve the issue and, though it’s by no means excruciating, our ears tire quickly because of this tough edge to notes. Simply put, the sonic balance is not conducive to longer periods of listening.

To some ears it may be less of an issue, especially considering the RX-V585’s wealth of talents and features, but even if that's the case for you, this product undoubtedly requires careful partnering. This means source, speakers and cables: anything with a marginally coarse presentation could tip the overall performance over the edge."

In this case it would be better to pair the amp with cheaper, and warmer, speakers. That way you could get the best of the amp, and no roughness.

I am not saying this is a bad amp. The amp gets great reviews, on most aspects. I am saying Dali Zensor 7s may not be the best match for this amp. Or.. you may not hear the roughness, in which case all is good.

          • @g1: That review is for the RX-V585. Do these receivers use the same internals?

            • @Little veg: I don't have a confirmation from anywhere that they share the same components. What I have is specification comparison: https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/compare/Yamaha_RX-V485_vs_Yam…

From the specifications it looks like 585 and 485 share common architecture, which would make engineering and financial sense.

The main point is that with speakers as good as Dali Zensor 7 one would get the most out of them with a good receiver. Listening in person would be less of a gamble then buying blindly online.

I've heard the same speakers with different receivers in setting up my home system. My home system is nothing fancy, and I bought an amp that I didn't expect to buy because it worked so well with my speakers. At least I saved some money :) overall I found that as the speakers get better the amp really needs to get better too, otherwise the money spent on speakers was a waste. The analogy really is buying a sports car and driving it at 30km/h on a racetrack.

Maybe this receiver would work well with those speakers, or maybe not. If there is ruggedness in the output of the receiver, it may ruin all of the investment put in to the speakers.

What's Amazon’s return policy? Would it be possible to set up the system, listen, and return the receiver if not satisfied?

              • @g1: Looking at the comparison there is a 300gram difference in weight between the RX-V485 to the RX-V585. So there may be enough of an internal difference in components that the downsides of the RX-V585 are less apparent in the RX-V485 (or they could be worse).

Shame Whathifi had not reviewed the entire RX-V*85 series to compare.

And as for Amazon returns, looks like for change of mind returns items need to be unopened.

  • It's now $310

    • That's the v385 right? Pretty sure the v485 is worth the extra $35?

      • Whoops

      • Yes. For $35 extra is a steal

  • Ordered one at HN but just received an email it’s back ordered. So much for the 1 hour click and collect

  • Can anyone suggest how and where can i get the required speakers to use with this amplifier…the Yamaha YHT-1840B 5.1ch Home Theatre Pack came with speakers and Subwoofer. Will need to buy speakers to use here. Can anyone help/guide.

  • +3

Thank you kindly. I had no idea I was replacing my AV receiver today!

  • Another newb here! Could I use a top of the line Logitech 5.1 speaker setup that has Optical input? Ie does this receiver support pass through of Dolby Digital 5.1 via optical output to my logitech speaker setup? Or would I have to buy seperate speakers? cheers

    • +1

Your logitechs are powered? If so then no as this will require passive speakers attached, or it can cast to powered speakers not connected to the amp.

      • +1

Yep powered unfortunately. I ended up buying this anyway haha, but cheers for the reply mate!

        • +1

You can always sell the Logitechs and get a set of Volls at the budget end, or the Elacs, or perhaps look at the Q Acoustics that get posted here by the audio guys every now and then.

  • I have a dated amp, Marantz Sr5004, not sure if this is a an upgrade soundwise though, video pass through must be better.. Can anyone comment?

    • +2

Judging from your 50s series Marantz, the answer is No. It's not an upgrade in terms of amp power. Your comparable amp would be Marantz SR5013 or the newest iteration SR5014. And for Denon brand its the X3500H or the newest iteration X3600H. Those are an upgrade for sure. For yamaha i think a comparable model would be RX-V2085.

      • Thanks mate

Harvey Norman is really hardly normal. I put online order at 8am hopefully it will be faster because they are not opened till 9am. So I've been waiting for email until 12.30pm said order is ready for pick up by email. As soon as the email arrived, the guy in store called me that a customer just beat him to it! Like the guy pick up the item and paid in cash. What is the chance someone do that faster than the email he sent me?

Long story short, online customer is treated less important than walk in customer. Suit the name hardly normal!

    • What Harvey norman was it lol might have been me got the last boxed one at my local

      • Malaga, so was it you?

  • Anyone know of a decently priced subwoofer to get? My old one blew up :(

  • Another newb question, would something like this YHT1840B $350 be better value because you get the 5 speakers?
    https://www.amazon.com.au/Yamaha-Channel-Home-Theater-YHT184…

    • I suspect the receiver that comes with that set has far less features.

  • Managed to get one this morning from HN. Seems like a pretty good unit. No idea why I presumed it was a DAB model. Came with a dab antenna but the unit is not DAB. Seems to be 499 now on HN website.

  • Hmmm… how long did this deal last? Is it still flash sale time or was it pulled once Amazon matched it?

  • Don't feel so bad taking my (faulty) RX-V2700 to e-recycling now.

    • I have an old Marantz amp that went unused for a decade. It now turns off after a few minutes, and its likely something that will cost too much to fix.

      • I actually put mine in for repair and paid $240 I think which was mostly labour - the guy said it was really hard to diagnose. Because I had a spare I was using it was about 6 months before I got around to testing it, and it still had an audio fault which was frustrating. I would have felt pretty low trying to take it back to the repairer after 6 months, but also I didn't want to throw more money into it despite how much it originally cost.

Luckily, a few months ago I went to a garage sale and there was a boxed "untested" Yamaha amp that the guy swore worked and I bought it for $40. It worked perfectly and I felt like the universe was telling me to let the old one go :)
