Storing a Jump Starter inside CAR

Just got a new Gooloo 800A from Amazon and tried to search whether its safe to keep jump starter inside a car but unable get anything out of the thread which I found, so thought of asking from our fellow ozbargainers.

I live in Sydney and have Toyota Corolla(Sedan), so could anyone please suggest whether you are storing it inside car? If so, whats the best practice to keep it or its not advisable to keep it.

Thanks.

Is there like a storage space under the boot cover where the wheel or a side compartment in the boot. Wouldn't think there is an issue. Probably the main thing is to ensure the battery is charged as required for when you need it.

    • Thanks, I'll check the space in boot. Planning to keep it charged for every 3 months as advised by the seller.

I stored mine under the seat and still inside original box. As long as its not directly under the sun, it should be fine.

    • Thanks, I do the the original storage case and have a check if it can be placed under the seat.

Keep it anywhere you want. It's battery like the one under your bonnet with the engine.

      No it's not.
Car batteries are lead-acid, this device contains Lithium Polymer batteries, a different and potentially far more dangerous technology.
I read that the U.S. Fire Administration declared lithium batteries the “root cause” of at least 195 separate fires and explosions from 2009 to 2017. The Federal Aviation Administration has reported a few hundred incidents of smoke, fire, extreme heat, or explosions involving lithium-ion or unknown batteries in flight cargo or passenger baggage.
So OP is right to be concerned about safely storing these items.
And the instructions for the device say "Don't use the product at a high temperature or place it for a long time under a high temperature environment".

      • Thanks for the details. I will not keep it on glove box for sure and now thinking about whether to keep it inside the vehicle or not.

      • Lead acid batteries also explode and set fire to cars.

        Source: it happened to me!

Personally I have no issues with leaving the Gooloo unit (I have one) in the car. I don't think the cabin gets to temperatures that are high enough for long enough to cause an issue.

        Is an interesting question though.

Mine is stored in the boot under "floor cover". Right next to a dry chemical fire extinguisher. My car is usually parked out of direct sunlight, but if either of them explode, my car is screwed!

I have choosen to keep under the spare tyre in boot same as you. Looks like tats the option if I want to keep inside.

    From the above site.

It can be easily placed in the glovebox.

It's compact enough to fit in a glove box and carry on an airplane.

Don't use the product at a high temperature or place it for a long time under a high temperature environment.

I guess the glovebox won't get hot when you are parked at the railway station for ten hours on a 40 degree day.

  • If you leave it out of direct sunlight it should be fine.
Here's what happens when you leave it in direct sunlight

I remember seeing that news story, whichever morning news show it was kept teasing it at every ad break making it seem like the Mazda put this mother and her children in danger. Eventually gets to the actual story and it's just some crappy battery.

So yeah I wouldn't want to keep one in the car which is annoying as that's where you'd want it to be.

    • Thanks for the suggestion.

  • I have ten makita 18v cordless tool lithium ion batteries that sit in the back of a station wagon in the sun every day. Never had a problem.

    • Thanks, this gives me the confidence to keep it inside :-)

  • The devices are absolutely fantastic but if your particular one does not have leads for your cigarette lighter socket, and only those for direct battery contact, then I am afraid that is all you have available.
There is nothing wrong with popping the bonnet and placing the leads on the battery.
