  • Check you service manual. Usually by time / Kms. Call up a few mechanic with your details. Also get water pump and all accessory belts checked and replaced at same time. At a guess $500 plus as its not normally an easy job.

Hasn't the belt replacement come up on previous regular services?

Trick question?? i30 has a timing chain and not a belt.

    any mechanic recommendations

Yeah, don't take it to the guy who said you need a timing belt on a car with a timing chain.

  • How hard can it be to ring a couple of Hyundai dealers to get the costing, and then hunt out a local mechanic?

    • A good mechanic is hard to find, but yes you do have to try them yourself even if you get a recommendation.

      • Finding one is the easier part, once you have found one trying to get a booking can be pretty difficult. We had a great mechanic in the past but he was always booked out a couple of months in advance.

        • I was given a recommendation of a good mechanic, but from my experience it was poor. He wasn't professional, left minor things off the car when they should of been replaced after their inspection. There was even a tool left in the engine bay. Yes,
easy to find a mechanic. Hard to find a good one. I also rang up the day before and got a booking for the next day as he had a cancellation or space. Really a hit and miss is what I am trying to say.

Almost all i30 models use timing chains. Unlike timing belts you don't replace timing chains unless there is a problem with it.

$0 cost as you don't need to service the chain.

How are people so unaware of car basics?

      The younger generation

Shit education from older generations ¯_(ツ)_/¯

  • It’s probably the serpentine belt that needs changing around that time.

But yeah get a mechanic to have a look at the belt and check it for wear. I only paid $80 for the part recently at my mechanics and he just replaced it as part of the service. So no idea how much it should cost but probably shouldn’t cost too much.
