    • Julian Assange is currently facing death for publishing

They noted that most of the new charges were related to obtaining the secret document archives, as opposed to publishing them.

    • I too like to use Wikipedia as credible sources of evidence.

Well, you could go and live in China if you are scared of being spied on by our government.

  • Nokia 7.2 is $370 at OW if you want Android One. It meets all your needs.

    • I looked at the 7.2 but some wpool comments seem to indicate its quite flaky

    • I just had another look at this , but OW shows it priced at $547?

      • I just bought one after Xmas. Maybe their sale ended?

What's the reason for staying away from Chinese?

You've got a lot of requirements for someone on a budget.

    • Mostly because friends have had issues with their xiaomi and oneplus phones, so looking for something that is relatively stable.

I dont care about cameras, gaming, oled, curved screens, top processors etc…so was hoping giving up on those would mean i could still get something that meets my needs

My Oneplus 6 has been the best phone ive ever owned.

Same here. After OnePlus 5, my family are converts and we're all using OnePlus. All the 5s are still going strong as well as the 6s and 7s. (None of us have bothered with the pro line they've recently released as the extras haven't been necessary.)

      • Yeh I'm still using Mi Mix2 from almost two years ago. Best phone yet. I was using mostly iPhones and Xperia before this

Probably the Chinese Government Planting Backdoors. But you could always reflash the ROM. Unless the hardware has a backdoor. Like what happened to the Lenovo servers and the recent report of China spying on Australians.

Not sure what you mean by "lag", but if you mean just general responsiveness, then it depends on how you use your phone more than anything else. If you keep multiple apps open, like to have things running in the background, then it's going to be hard to have any modern phone which is responsive. Even my flagships are really not that responsive if I'm reckless.

Of all the phones I've used (which are many - both personal and for work), I find that the Pixel phones have the best "snappiness" on Android, but that's because they have very, very aggressive background app management compared to Samsung. They also tend to come with less bloatware. However, once I removed all the bloatware from my Samsung, got root access and disabled all of Samsung's unnecessary services, it ran much faster. However, I do think the OS is less aggressive with memory management, so I have to kill apps more regularly.

To that end, I might just go for a Pixel 3a (or XL) on sale, which might be just above your $400 budget. I'd steer away from phones below $400.

    • limited to no bezels (so not interested in old flagships)

Old flagships are much, much better than current $400 phones.

    • I do shut apps down after a while generally. Yes responsiveness is what i mean, quickly flickkng between open apps, or quickly laumching the camera, or having youtube playing on multi window whilst using other apps and switching between them. Iv still got an old iphone 5s that from a responsivness point im happy with but doesnt meet my other criteria.

Aside from the bezel issue on old flagships id worry about how long il get updates for.

Might have a hands on look at the Nokias given Andrioid One and go with a local retailer for support issues

      • Aside from the bezel issue on old flagships id worry about how long il get updates for.

I'd have the most faith in an old Google flagship, the Pixel 3/3XL/3a will continue to get updates. I have less faith in Samsung, but they've done reasonably well with their S8/S9.

I actually think you have a better chance of getting updates on these old flagships than you are on something like a budget Nokia. Who even knows if Nokia will still be around and whether they'll even still be making Android phones. At least with Google/Samsung and the other big names, you know they'll be around and making Android phones.

        • Fair call, il look into the pixels too then, thanks!

      • Huawei phones close background apps aggressively. I have a Mate 10 and it still feels fast. Wife has a Poco F1 and it's quite good too but doesn't feel quite as fast as my M10.

Something to consider is also the launcher used can make it seem slow.

  • Out of curiosity, what do (individual) people use 2nd phones for?

Is it like having a second wallet or second car (in a family)?

    • I use my second phone for International calls. Plus it acts as a good backup when your main phone dies.

    • Mostly for OS travel with local SIM and needing access to my usual number at the same time. I wish all phones were dual SIM.

Long story but my main phone (Note 8) that I used for work/personal use broke, and got a S10e from work for free, but new company policy means they monitor the phone use and dont allow paid apps/private toll calls etc.

Im also travelling overseas on holiday and dont want to take the work phone with me.

Hence need for a 2nd personal phone
