        • Haneda is a much better airport for domestic connections as it is the main domestic airport in Tokyo. Narita does have some domestic flights but its a only a few flights a day and this is the main problem.

If you do not have any domestic connections in Japan, then Narita is still quite good. It has cheaper accommodation nearby, usually with shuttle services to airport and shopping areas. And is less than 40 minutes from Ueno by the Keisei skyliner (Keisei trains are better than JR, unless you've got the JR pass or need to go to West Tokyo).

I just added this comment as some of the advantages of Haneda are a bit overstated and there are quite a few advantages of Narita.

          • @Pcoder: HND is also good for certain international connections particularly for destinations in Asia such as HK or Shanghai. It has a much newer international terminal building too, compared to which the terminal 2 (where JAL operates) at NRT is a bit run down, and I find the ceilings particularly depressing.

In the long run the visions that had been laid for the two airports are HND focusing on business travellers with more convenience and comfort while NRT more for leisure meaning more long haul international connections and probably more affordable options too (hence the LCC terminal). I feel that JAL and ANA are both choosing HND on the Sydney route to appeal their local market particularly people who travel for work, which means higher service standards and less direct competition from cheaper airlines that would drag them into as a price war, as what we have seen with Qantas on China routes.

The verdict is that flights into HND may be generally of more value and will be more of a bargain if you see them on sale with NRT flights in silimiar price range.

  • I think this is a pretty good deal given that the airline is (a+) and the direct flights are spread in the peak season.

I picked up flights to Osaka this March for approx 560ish with a short layover in Phillipines - these flights should still be available if you search around.

I need a flight that gets us into Tokyo late July, needs to be there for the 28th 9am onward. Guess no one else has any deals?

  • +1

Now just need a sale for December :)

  • Noob question:

It appears that the booking needs to be done through some third party sites like AuntBetty, edreams, ifly, etc.

Which one is more reputable? Asking this because I've heard some concerning reviews regarding booking through the mentioned websites.

    • I used AuntBetty and it was straight forward no issues. However later on towards near the flight there was some changes to our flight time that didnt get sorted properly and took awhile to get back to me. Afterwards it was fine.

    • I've used trip.com before with success

    • +1

I used Skiddoo for a couple of times for overseas tickets both were fine, the etickets got issued within an hour. I suppose with these kind of sites most of the time you won't have trouble unless you need to make changes then it become hell !

    • +1

Try the airline directly if you're worried (like I was). I ended up booking directly with JAL for about $50-60 (over 2 guests) more all up than the cheapest one listed.

After having to change a flight through webjet once (absolute hell), for me it's worth the extra $ knowing that I have a booking directly with the airline and that if I have a problem I can just get it sorted with them direct.

  • Do they have specials one way tickets to Japan would be a great way of offloading my PITA wife once and for all

    • +1

      Just get divorced then.

    • Why suffer together when you could have a divorce? Seems you're too passive aggressive to speak with her like an adult lmao

  • What are the chances of a similar sale for Dec departure/Jan return from Perth? Has anyone seen anything similar before?

    • School holidays and new year holidays, probably not. But keep an eye out and maybe you'll find something.

    • For late Dec departure / early Jan return anything less than $1100 return will be a killer deal.

  • Always tempted when seeing these flight deals but never been to japan, are they expensive down there?

    • +1

yeah kinda. food is fine. transport and most other things get expensive

    • +2

Don't go during cherry blossom..everything is at least 1.5* more expensive…accommodation and flights..

Your main transportation tool will be subway and it adds up $$$$…

Beautiful country though, I'm going back again in Dec.

    • +1

Expensive compared to other parts of Asia, but not really compared to Aus. I've found hotels to be cheaper and better than the equivalent here in Aus

  • Hi rep, any good deals for Adelaide to Japan?

  • Just note that these may book into fare class O, which does not give seat selection until 24 hours before departure…

    • Yep, I had this last time. JAL has a 2-4-2 seat layout which is awesome if you can get the sides. On the way there we booked maybe 15 hours before our flight and we had to sit in the middle of the middle section with 2 strangers surrounding us, was shit. On the way home I booked right on 24 hours before (maybe 1 minute after) and there were only 4 seats left on the side, 2 of which we thankfully managed to get.

  • Does this deal work other way around? I'm hoping to buy them for my parents in Japan to come and visit Aus

    • don't think so but why don't you plug in the dates and see haha

  • +2

if anyone who wants an idea what to do in Tokyo, Kyoto and Osaka feel free to pm.

Did an itinerary for my 2 weeks trip :)

  • Can I earn velocity points with this airline?

  • Any idea how long the sale will go for?

    • Book now and worry later. Or you might miss out.

  • Trying to find direct flights from/to Sydney in October (roughly 10 days trip), but Is there a way to mix Kix/Hnd instead of just return trips to either one? Eg syd-kix, hnd-syd or syd-hnd, kix-syd? Tried to do multipart search but can’t seem to get direct flights for both direction. Between qantas and jal, it’s either a stopover on each leg. If only I can mix the direct flights from both airlines in one itinerary.

    • I don't think you can mix both airlines in the same itinerary, you'll end up paying a lot for 2 separate 1 way trips.

qantas allows multicity we did exactly what you want in October 2018 SYD - KIX and then HND - SYD

  • So the actual booking happens on www.travelgo.com ? As IWTF is routing to them.

    • Yes. And many others like aunt Betty.

  • Is it possible to have a longer layover in Tokyo on flights to Osaka without paying too much extra?

E.g. Buy a return ticket from Sydney to Osaka. Arrive in Tokyo, spend a few days there, catch the transfer to Osaka. Do the reverse for the return leg.
Will it become a multi-city trip in that case?

Edit: had some luck checking multi-city flights on the JAL site. Works out to about $715 for dates in October.
