Bowers & Wilkins ASW608 Active 8-inch Sealed Subwoofer (Matte Black Only) $599 Delivered @ KlappAV

130

Price is currently $749 everywhere.

I also considered this subwoofer with the KEF Kube 8b as a musical subwoofer for 2.1 duties, due to both having basic DSP corrections built-in & reported performance with music.
The B&W ASW608 actually out-does the Kube 8b with DSP options, as it has one more extra adjustment switch.

The ASW608 has 2x DSP-switches, “Bass-extension” & “EQ”.

From Manual:
The BASS EXTENSION switch offers three options of subwoofer bass extension. Position A gives the greatest extension and position C gives the least extension. Position B provides a compromise setting. If the system is to be used at very high volume levels or in a large listening room, restricting the bass extension by selecting either B or C may help ensure that the subwoofer is not asked to exceed its performance limits. In most situations the BASS EXTENSION switch should be left in position A.
The EQ switch alters the subwoofer bass roll-off alignment. The bass you hear is a combination of the subwoofer plus the effects of the room and you should choose the position that best complements your room and the location of the subwoofer.
Position A gives a “drier” alignment, more suited to placing the subwoofer in a corner or compensating for a resonant room. Position B is suited to a less resonant room acoustic and use away from a corner.

Notes: The manual is very detailed in setup information and will help to best integrate the subwoofer to main speakers.

  • Good only for music, would avoid for movies because SVS would have something better at a similar price.

    • +1

Cheapest brand-new SVS seems to be around the $1000 range.

      • Wow, I remember picking up a pair of sb12s for about 750$ each, I guess they were on runout a few year back though

        • Strong AU dollar back-then apparently.

Slightly OT, any recommendations for a complete 2.1 setup good for music around the $1000 - 1500?

    • 2 speakers, 1 sub and an amp? Or do you already have an amp?

    • +1

I know you specified your budget and this is about half to a third of that at around $600 but have you auditioned a Voll 2.1 setup? Voll Bookshelf Speakers ($130) + Voll 8" Sub ($220) + SMSL AD18 Amplifier ($210) makes for an excellent sounding little system! Sure there's better stuff around but based on your simple question I thought it was worth mentioning. If you shopped around you should be able to grab the SMSL AD18 for less as they can easily be had for $175 but sometimes as low as $150.

So many questions before you can properly answer a question like that.
What do you listen to? What sort of space? Just music?

  • What do you think about the Paradigm - DSP-3100v2 @ lifestyle Hi-Fi for $599

    • That one is probably better for movies than the ASW608.
My advice is to do plenty of research first. Buying blind may turn-into a mistake.

  • Good match for the B&W M1 speakers? Currently running an old Sony sub but have been thinking of an alternative.

    • Looking at the price of the M1 speakers, this seems like over-kill (price / ability).

    • B&W bundle the ASW608 with the 685 and 684 speaker HT bundles. That said, there was also a M1 HT bundle with the PV1D which is a much better sub.
I had two ASW610 with the 683 HT bundle and they were great but when I upgraded to dual SVS SB12 I realised for movies I had been missing out but I actually preferred the natural roll-off of the ASW610 for music vs SVS flat DSP response curve.
If you have M1 surround setup I think the ASW608 will be a good pairing, 2 is always better though.

  • Any idea whether one should get this or the Dali zensor e-12f subwoofer which is sold for similar price ?

    • Previous Dali E-12F deal was $575.20 @ Grays eBay last year. I have only seen it at around $1000+ since then for brand-new.

      • If the used or new versions of both were the same price which one would you prefer?
