Anyone Have Experience with Third Party Switch Docks?

Got a Switch for Xmas and am not a fan of the big bulky stock dock that Nintendo provides - not great for travelling.
I heard about some third party docks bricking Switches and this has scared me off a bit.
I saw that Skull and Co have released a dock which they claim doesn't have any issues.
Alternatively, I could gut the components and put in a different housing.

I'm wondering what ozb experiences with these are.

  • I just bought a smaller housing for like $5 and transferred the components.
It's very easy to do and you can watch a youtube video to help you.

IMO, I don't trust anything that isn't First Party Nintendo for the dock.

Personally I gutted the Official Nintendo Switch Dock and placed it into the Portable Dock Shell (Cheaper on eBay/Aliexpress/3D Printed).

PS: This process is reversible, so you can place the component back into the Official Dock.

  • I've been using the Hyperkin RetroN S64 mini dock and it's been great.

  • I’ve used one of these for over a year for travel use and it’s been great. Much cheaper now than I paid for it too. There was at least one third party dock that bricked Switches if you used it when doing a system update. It wasn’t this one but to be safe I’d disconnect your switch from a third party dock when doing a system update.

  • Can't speak for the Skull and Co one, but there's one called the Genki Dock on Kickstarter which is still being produced and orders fulfilled. It's essentially a travel dock for the Switch.

  • I bought a USB C hub in Japan which works well enough the half dozen times I have used it.
