What Is This Bug?

What is this bug that has been infesting my ceiling/outside of my cupboard for the past couple of weeks and how should I get rid of them?

https://photos.app.goo.gl/1APS1ecXLqYkFWBN8

It looks like flies but is much smaller (about half a cm in length). I don't leave food outside except for an uncovered bin in the kitchen (cleared daily) and some fruit (fresh, not rotten).

Any advice is appreciated.

I thought you meant a bug on the OzBargain website for a second…

  • looks just like housefly.

Cover your bins, throw out your fruits (anything sweet). You may want to get some fly traps too in the interim to get rid of these. Or spray the house (with insect spray), go out, then sweep them out.

    • Thanks for the comment. They aren't like the usual flies I have seen… These fly substantially slower and less frequent, and are much less sensitive to disruptions around them (normally I'd have a hard time chasing flies with the insect spray!).

Fruit fly. Put apple cider vinegar in a cup, cut a small hole in a plastic freezer bag corner and push into the cup to form a cone with the cut at bottom in the glass but not touching liquid.secure with rubber band.

They are dumb, will fly in then because the hole isn't at the highest point can't get out.

      • Flies is easier to kill with fly swatter.

Fruit flies - Department of Agriculture (AUS.)

Tephritidae and Drosophilidae are two fly families which include fruit flies.

        • Tephritids are 2.5–10 mm, often colourful with pictured wings.
        • Drosophilidae are 2–4 mm long, typically pale yellow to reddish brown to black, often with red eyes and sometimes with distinct black patterns on the wings.

Flies tend to swarm around food stuffs so as a preventative measure, ensure the kitchen bin is not left uncovered.

A chemical-free option to fly spray is to wipe the kitchen bin using lavender oil which repels flies.

  • array out of bounds.

Make a simple set and forget trap. Get a small dish, put in some cut up fruit or some fruit juice in the dish, cover it with glad wrap. Make sure there is tension and a nice seal with the glad wrap and poke a tiny hole in the middle. The fruit flys will get drawn to the scent and enter through the hole and will find it very difficult to exit.

Best way to get rid of these insects is to use a vacume. Wait until they rest on the wall or ceiling and then vacume up. Repeat process for a few days and as long as you have remove any potential source of nesting (bins, rubbish, old bananas etc) they should disapear.

    Flies means spiders.
    Spiders means rats
    Rats means snakes!!!!

No other way around this but you must nuke your house and rebuild it.

  • Corpse flies, check your crawl space.
