PSA: Costco Does NOT Have a "Forever" Warranty

Warning: long post.

TLDR: Note to anyone buying things from Costco expecting to rely on the belief they have some sort of "extended/awesome/second-to-none/forever warranty".

I'm posting this as a public service announcement as there seems to be a lot of misinformation/misunderstanding going around about Costco's "warranty".

Here is my personal experience. I purchased a (large and reasonably expensive-ish/high range at the time) Samsung Plasma TV approximately 7 years ago specifically from Costco with the express reason and understanding (could get the same price from other retailer) that should anything go wrong with the TV Costco would cover it with their "under warranty as long as you keep your membership active". At that time, I didn't do any actual due diligence beyond asking a staff member about it. I was told that as long I keep my membership the TV was under warranty - or at least words to that effect.

The TV died for no apparent reason last night. It has been working fine for many years with no issues. Last night it suddenly died while watching TV. Nothing unusual or interesting was happening at the time.

Costco's website does not list any information regarding any "warranty", but rather a 100% satisfaction guarantee, which says the following at the time of posting (link):

Costco's 100% Satisfaction Guarantee

One of the reasons why a Costco membership gives you incredible value is because we offer you a 100% Satisfaction Guarantee on your membership and purchases.

We promise that if we fail to deliver on quality produce, prices or services, we’ll refund your purchase*. This is in addition to your rights under Australian Consumer Law.

Additionally, if you’re dissatisfied with your membership for any reason, we’ll refund your membership fee in full at any time.

If you have any questions or concerns, visit our membership counter for assistance.

Exceptions*
Diamonds and watches

Members returning a diamond l.00ct or larger must present all original paperwork (IGI and/or GIA certificates), upon which you’ll receive a jewellery credit memo. >Refunds will be approved upon positive verification. This process may require 2–5 business days.

Refunds on all watches will be approved upon positive verification. This process may require 2–5 business days.

Special order kiosk and custom installed programs

Custom product(s) manufactured to our members personal and unique specifications cannot be returned or refunded except for warranty repair/replacement due to failure to meet specifications.

Hearing aid products

Hearing aid products are not covered by the 100% Satisfaction Guarantee policy and are instead covered by the terms of the purchase agreement signed at the time of purchase

In the future, Costco may restrict its return policy regarding other products. Restrictions will be shown at the time of purchase.

I've also read their Member Terms and Conditions (link) which says this about the Guarantee:

RISK-FREE 100% SATISFACTION GUARANTEE
On Membership: We will refund your membership fee in full at any time if you are dissatisfied.
On Merchandise: We guarantee your satisfaction on every product we sell and will refund your purchase price, with the following exceptions:
Diamonds: l.00ct or larger: Members returning a diamond over l.00ct must also present all original paperwork (IGI and/or GIA certificates) at which time they will receive a Jewellery Credit Memo. Refunds will be approved upon positive verification. This process may require 2-5 business days.
Refunds on all watches will be approved upon positive verification. This process may require 2-5 business days.
Special Order Kiosk and Custom Installed Programs: Custom product(s) manufactured to our members personal and unique specifications cannot be returned or refunded, except for warranty repair/replacement due to failure to meet specifications.
Hearing Aid Products: Hearing aid products may not be covered by the 100% Satisfaction Guarantee and are covered by the terms of the purchase agreement signed at the time of purchases.
Costco may in future restrict its return policy regarding other products. Restrictions will be shown at time of purchase.

From doing fairly extensive reading on this on forums (OZB, Whirpool, etc.) it is clear that there is still a general belief that Costco's "Warranty" is forever, etc. This is most certainly not the case. (They don't offer a warranty beyond the manufacturer's warranty. Rather, it is a a satisfaction guarantee which to be fair it may well still be better than many other retailers.) It seems to be pretty much closer to the ACL consumer guarantee in that they MAY allow you to return it for a reasonable period of time - whatever that period of time is, is up to them.

It may be easier to replace an item from Costco than going through an ACL claim with other retailers, but do not expect it to be anything like "forever" or even much (or at all) beyond what the ACL might give you from any other retailer.

Importantly, there are many people promoting the idea that Costco's "amazing warranty" is a reason to consider buying things from them over other retailers. (I myself was in this category until today.)

I accept that a retailer cannot probably profitably exist returning 20-year old expensive items for a full refund but perhaps they could be clearer on the limitations and rules of their guarantee because it could be misunderstood.

I hope that this helps others learning from my actual experience.

[Edit: forgot to explain that the TV died for no apparent reason and it wasn't just that I was trying to return it for a new one after using it for many years]

[Edit2: I have removed parts that described my personal disappointment and seemed to "have a go" at Costco as they were not relevant and undermines my actual intention of trying to help others who might be under the same mistaken impression as I was]

[Edit3: Seems some people want to know the background of what happened after the TV broke so here is the short version if it helps. I contacted Costco and they had a store manager call me back. Regarding my belief that there was a "warranty" as long as I kept my membership valid, he did say "someone may have told you that at the time but it's not right" or words to that effect. He did in the end offer to give me $200 off any TV I bought from them as a replacement. The conversation was pleasant in tone and I never demanded a refund. He was nice about it and I have no specific gripe with how they handled it as such. Yes, I am disappointed and I do think their guarantee is unclear.]

Why anyone would pay to shop at Costco is beyond me. No cheaper than anywhere else as long as you have the ability to shop around

  • What did you pay for the TV OP?

    Hi Mate,
Very serious claims you make. Likely this Costco store manager needs to be fired. Which store was it?

Some time ago I got it in writing that it was a lifetime satisfaction guarantee and have called them confirming on a few occasions. Have tested the theory too by returning a 3 year old brother A3 scanner/printer for a full refund because I was not satisfied with it. Note: for clarity do not ask for warranty ask for a full refund! Warranty is something quite different and they are no good at handling repairs so just ask for money back.

Also ask the manager for proof in writing of his crazy claims. Tell the bugger that the whole community is watching his answer. I am not sure if I still have written proof but will try to hunt around for it as I never take these concepts on face value, at least confirmed this three times with Costco staff over the last few years so there is no assumption here like others are claiming. (Note they can remove it in the future as they can all willingly kill themselves too)

For clarification to all those saying.. can't expect this.. We pay $60 just for the benefit of the assurance/warranty. Its NO different than buying extended warranty except we pay it yearly as a once off fee rather than as a separate policy or part of say credit card insurance. If Costco refuse to honour whats clearly a WRITTEN lifetime refund warranty then they will be subject to not just ACLs but dishonest business practice under fair trading as the membership forms a contract of engagement.

Note, for those that are not members, Costco is not really cheaper that other retailers, it simply sells more bulk items (which can reduce cost due to volume) and offers the lifetime satisfaction guarantee. If the drop the guarantee then the membership is basically worthless as most items can be sourced cheaper elsewhere.

I certainly hope you've just struck an idiotic manager and we can just make sure he's removed from that Costco.

    • Agreed

We pay $60 just for the benefit of the assurance/warranty .

I actually only paid it to get inside their doors . Getting in the door I found a sheety bakery , top roasted chickens , great specials and crappy normal everyday prices . Of course the top product is $1.99 hotdog with unlimited drink refills if you are lucky enough to find a seat to enjoy it .

Thank you OP for sharing your experience and for the PSA. The sensible way you dealt with the situation is also a credit to you. Although, I do have to admit that I am ever so slightly disappointed that you did not have a meltdown and lashed out at everyone like this guy here :

It does make for a more interesting read ;) Perhaps not your style?

  • Here’s what I’ve seen of this warranty in action: link and there’s more on that thread. YMMV, but yeah 7 years and TV maybe not.

This is the misleading part, I just checked out the Refunds and return policy on the Costco website:

    https://www.costco.com.au/member-care/refunds-and-return

    What's Costco's refund policy?
We’ll refund your purchases or membership fee in full at any time if you’re dissatisfied with your products or experience. Click the link for further information.

    It says "at any time"…

  • It's 2020.

Why are you still using a plasma TV?

If you worked at a retailer, would you still want your boss to be paying you the same wage as 7 years ago?

Retailers need to make money, they're private businesses, not charities.

Just saying, just buy a new TV, they're less than $1000 for really good ones.

    WarrantyGate.

    • Your comparison by using economy inflation is pretty silly.

Price of living up 300%, so our wages should be too? I'll give you a hint, they're not.

  • I spoke to them about shoes. They said common sense at least 1 year plus.

At a normal shoe shop, you wouldn't even get 3 months.

So all good. Also no receipt needed.so heads off to that.

    • +1

But what if I'm not satisified my shoes didn't last 15 years and therefore I believe I'm entitled to a refund in 2035?

      /sarcasm

Evidently common sense is not so common as shown by this thread.

      • -2

The thread isn't about warranty, it's about Scamming retailers.
They will F it for everyone else if they push their luck

      • The guarantee is 100% dude, no time limit. Pretty common sense

        • So if you bought shoes from Costco which wear out, would you return them 10 years later, rinse and repeat?

You can't be that much of a dud to say yes right?

          • +1

@OzBrogains: I wouldn’t. I would be 100% satisfied. But it’s not me, it’s the customer. Satisfaction is subjective, not objective reasonable. Costco has this policy as people do not exercise their right. Other shops say satisfied for 3 months. Costco have the same but says 100% and no time limit. Words have to mean something.

  • 7 years is plenty, any TV I buy I'll feel lucky if I get 3 years out if it and that is what most warranty are

  • Bahahahah the people who work there will tell you whatever they like to keep your membership

  • Any updates on costco returns. Thinking of trying it and signing up to get a 5k sofa and return it in 8 years just to see what happens.

    • Why? Why would you deliberately do this?

      • It's a good thing to try.
They have a lifetime satisfaction guarantee.
        Why not test it out.
Also it's not really deliberate as there is a high chance of when you use something it becomes not as comfortable as when it is new so you satisfaction level goes down so in truth I will only be following their instruction and doing my duty to return something that I am no longer satisfied with which is what they told me to do when I spoke to them on the phone.

        • That some weird mental gymnastics hoops you've jumped through to justify getting something for free. If many people had the same mindset to abuse the policy like this then it would eventually stop being offered. Business needs to make money to survive.

          • @Hybroid: They expect around 80% of people buying furniture and products over $1k to return it at some point in their life. They said they don't lose money and encourage it for people to return it.

I only have this mindset because of what other people have posted about this and what costco told me to do otherwise I would not do this.

I believe this is not abusing the policy but just following it.

Please don't buy anything from costco and then return it because, I don't want you to be a hypocrite.

      • I also wanted the sofa for over 3 years but couldn't justify the price until now.

  • Does anyone know if they extend the warranty (at all………..?) I'm considering buying an iPad there. I don't care if it's not forever but a 'free 3 year' wouldn't go astray?

  • I don't see it as taking advantage of anything.
If you are putting out such a open ended policy, then people should definitely use it.

Its like saying "dont go and pricematch at officeworks, you should be supporting them with paying the premium".

Costco have been more strict lately with asking you to call the manufacturer and then provide costco with a RMA or a case number. Before they would accept a return.

Also if they aren't encouraging the "unlimited warranty", then they should educate their staff. I have asked multiple times before to their staff saying "what is the warranty like on thesE?" and they say "It is unlimited warranty unless you cancel the membership."

  • They have definitely changed it now for electronics too
    https://www.costco.com.au/member-care/refunds-and-return/wha…

    They added the exclusion:
Certain Electronic goods (purchased on or after [August 31st 2020])
For electronic goods, Costco Wholesale’s return policy for change of mind only applies for 90 days from the date the member receives the following goods: televisions, projectors, major household appliances (including refrigerators, freezers, rangehoods, cooktops, microwaves, dishwashers, washers and dryers), computers, touchscreen tablets, smart watches, cameras, aerial cameras (including drones) security cameras, camcorders, MP3 players, cellular phones and portable air conditioners.

  • Got a TV in 2013 and just returned it as I did not cancel my membership, got full refund.
So I think the new rules are for if you purchased it after 2020 or something not before

  • To start with, you've got 7 years of use out of the TV, that's more than reasonable, the 200$ is fair and you should be 'satisfied' with this …

if you wanted to be difficult and a little bit unreasonable, you could look at wayback machine, going back to 2013:

    Risk-Free 100% Satisfaction Guarantee
On Membership: We will refund your membership fee in full at any time if you are dissatisfied.
On Merchandise: We guarantee your satisfaction on every product we sell, and will refund your purchase price. This is in addition to your rights under the Australian Consumer Law.

    What is your refund policy?
