So we were threatened & 'forced' to buy a product

So we went to a Chemist today to buy a water bottle for my son. My wife decided on one bottle but then realised it might be too small so she took the bottle out of the box and tested it by sucking into the draw! As soon as I saw her sucking the bottle, I told her it is too late to change as she already sucked it, in our language (not english).

She continued holding the bottle while I was assessing other bottles, then there was a male staff coming towards us started to rant. "You shouldn't suck the bottle and test it like that …", my wife politely said sorry and told him we will buy it.

He continued ranting for like 2 mins. I calmly waited for him to finish and said: "mate, we had decided to buy the bottle." and he then started threaten us: "I appreciate it but make sure you buy it because I will check the camera up front and I will make you buy it" We were speechless for like 10 seconds did not believe what we've been told from a store staff, so I decided to tell him: "you don't have to do it mate" and proceeded to buy the bottle and left.

We left the store feeling threatened & so empty that I & my wife did not say a word to each other in 5 mins as we never experience something like this before, my wife went bursting crying in the car. I mean, we both acknowledged that my wife was wrong sucking the bottle but the way we treated by the staff was very inappropriate & unprofessional. I have been to this local shop for years and have not had any bad experience with it and I am not sure if I would return after this.

I believe by the situation should have been handled a lot more better by the staff. Should I report this to the store manager? What would you tell the staff if he said that to you?

Update: Just want to be clear that we admitted the fault, at the shop to the store person and also said we would proceed buying the bottle. What I hoped that he would've stopped after that, but was very shocked hearing this: "I appreciate it but make sure you buy it because I will check the camera up front and I will make you buy it". I know he might have been triggered but if you were him, would you have handled differently in a proper manner? What bothered me most was the language used, threatening language, the way he rant that should never come out from a staff.

Update 2: So a lot of people have commented how bad my wife's action was, we knew & admitted it so disgusting, ewe, etc, all you can say but we've had enough, we've done our reflection. My questions actual questions are should this had been handled in an appropriate way by the staff person or differently? What would you tell the staff if he said that to you?

Report the incident. Admit the mistake but request the staff to act appropriately, professionally.

Forget it, you were wrong so suck it.

  • The idiot is likely racist and won’t change their behaviour based on what you do. The store manager will very apologetic and do nothing when you’re gone. Best you just move on, shop elsewhere and chat about it on ozbargain.

    • I also doubt that the store manager would do something if I reported.

    • It was more like racist to me, tbh.

      • +2

Nothing in your description suggests that he is a racist. Stop finding excuses to make yourself feel better. You guys screwed up.

Move on and go to a different chemist. You won't need to deal with their service and he won't need to deal with you

        • Tbh, I didn't want to touch that sensitive topic until @Halo375 mentioned it and don't want to go deep dive into it so I withdrew my previous comment. My intention for this post was not finding the reasons why he ranted. It was to see if the store person's actions were appropriate or not, and should he has handled the situation differently.

Interesting post. Do you assume OP and his wife non-Caucasian? He and his wife might be Caucasians from a non-English speaking country.
While racism still exists, I don't think it is appropriate to automatically assume that racism is the drive behind a rude behaviour.
A few years ago I went to a shop with a friend, he complained to me that the checkout person was racist because she was extremely grumpy towards him. I told him that she was actually grumpy to other Caucasian customers in front of him too so racism didn't seem to play a role in that case.

    • The idiot is likely racist

Why would you assume that he is racist without any reference to what race anybody is?

  • +3

You were hardly threatened, but it probably felt like it because you were guilty.

  • +1

Just go back and return the bottle now…you can have the last laugh.

  • +1

Some people are on a ppwer trip, but seriously. I mean where is your common sense or your wife's. Wtf

    • Totally admit that @mbck, she sucked and did not think twice b/c she thought she already decided on the bottle, it's wrong though. But it did not equally mean a staff can threaten their customers like that. wth is customer service? We were low but he was worst.

The guy has a responsibility to ensure everyone in the store is safe.

This is such an awkward and out of the box event, their reaction is to put their defenses up and that's how it came out.

I dont think i can blame the guy for doing what he did. And i don't think you've got a leg to blame him for bullying. There is absolutely no reason to suck the bottle in the first place.

Ps title needs to be updated:

Wife got caught sucking in store.

  • What happens when she shops for fruit?

    • +1

squeeze gently & nicely to test… no sucking though ;-)

  • +1

we both acknowledged that my wife was wrong sucking the bottle

Yes she was….. WTF sucking on a product in the store before buying it. You know other people have to buy and use these things if you didn't?

Would you like it if someone had sucked on that bottle and put it back, then your wife came along and had a suck too?

I believe by the situation should have been handled a lot more better by the staff.

Most likely, but then again, you as customers should have acted better in the first place.

Lots of blame to go around. Best to just move on.

    • I am with you for the first 2 points @JimmyF - it is a common sense. I have witnessed a lot of bad actions/behaviours by customers but they were handled so professionally by a professional protocol, appropriate language. What bothered me most was the language used, threatening language, the way he rant that should never come out from a staff.

      • The store is probably willing to hear you out if you contact them via facebook or their phone number. Managers care about how their employees conduct themselves.

she took the bottle out of the box and tested it by sucking into the draw!

Seriously? Did you hear about the ice cream licking incident?

    https://7news.com.au/news/crime/woman-who-licked-ice-cream-a…

He could have been more polite, but common sense says you don't go licking or sucking on items when at the shops.

with all my respect, the one in the link you sent is not something closed to this. As I said, my wife had decided to buy the bottle and did not intend to go away without buying it.

      • +3

If she already decided to buy, why did she have to test it?

I have to thank you for posting this, I will make sure that I wash everything I buy from now on.

        • +1

Exactly. Now op is diverting the blame to the store person. I mean. Some people in this world seriously.

          • @mbck: I am not blaming to the store person as I already admit here multiple times here that it was my wife's fault. What I was wondering and believing that the situation could have been handled in a professional way rather than using threatening language, here is an example script: "Guys, since you have opened the box, it is our store policy to require customer to buy the opened product. Also, it is prohibited to test product by sucking it like that"

      • +2

The shop attendant could not know your intentions, and is right to doubt your verbal intent to buy it.

      • +3

I'd say it shares some similarity. Sucking/licking something that others intend to put in their mouth is just disgusting.

As I said, my wife had decided to buy the bottle and did not intend to go away without buying it.

And he said "I appreciate it but make sure you buy it because I will check the camera up front and I will make you buy it"

He must have been shocked seeing someone do that.

  • +1

i think you should not open products in the store.

    learn and move on

  • +3

was it your wife's intention to put it back?, if you hadnt said anything. id be more focused on educating your wife that is extremely disgusting no matter where you come from.

i seriously think if you reported this you should reassess your logic… what happened was your fault

  • +2

He might have been a bit hysterical but what your wife did was not acceptable either…
    I don't see any threat…
Voted, forget it… and now I'm gonna sleep…

  • +2

We have no idea of the exact situation you describe and it is your opinion about "and he then started threaten us" Statement.

The term "threaten" can be misconstrued.

We have only one side of the story here…

  • Don’t use that chemist anymore.
    Vote with your feet.
    Their loss.

    • Their gain. No more disgusting behaviour from this customer.

  • +1

    disgusting behaviour from both parties

  • +1

    Crying, aw that's too bad.

Imagine if you guys didn't buy it though. It could be considered tampering.
Disease can be spread from the mouth. I imagine a lot of sick people come into the chemist.
Speaking another language I'm guessing OP's wife isn't familiar with the proper culture and etiquette.
It's a real big no no to do something like that to a product on the shelf.

  • You could name and shame the particular chemist.

  • A friend of mine and my grandmother both like to go to the supermarket to grocery shop, but while doing some opportunities snack on a bag of chips(friend, aussie) or a deli meat wrapped and barcoded from the deli(gran, very eastern European) sometimes with a drink! Once they get to the checkout they put the wrappers of their snacks on the belt just like other items and pay for the consumed food.

While I find it weird, it seems supermarket staff don't because they've never once been told off in my presence(not to say they never have been).
I think the issue is that a baby bottle is a sterile product until the baby uses it, maybe bites the nib, maybe it has inaccessible seals. Either way, or even if it were perfect your wife sucking on it would have made the bottle no longer sterile. Itd be like testing a sistema by putting your leftover lasagna in it.
The clerk's attitude was probably to harsh, a gentle explanation explaining the hygiene issue and that you'd have to pay for it(much like you break it you bought it goes) would have been nicer…but we've all met terrible retail staff.
Sorry your wife feels so bad, she made an honest mistake and didn't need some unhappy retail clerk making a mountain out of a molehill.

    • Why does your friend go to the supermarket for dates with your Grandmother? Doesn't that make you feel a little wierd?

  • 'Forced' to buy the product? Your dear wife already contaminated the thing, it can't be sold to anyone else, flyguy

  • +1

OP, you're in the wrong here, but toughen up. If it were me, following the line "I appreciate it but make sure you buy it because I will check the camera up front and I will make you buy it", I would have just responded with "go ahead, try" or something to that effect.

You can't be soft OP, if you're just going to get upset and start crying over everything, you'll just be the one who loses all the time. Bullies look for weak people to pick on them, it's just like in the school yard.

This is heart-to-heart advice because I used to be soft when I was younger too, just try to be nice to people and got trampled on. After putting up with this for too long, I know what my rights are now and I'm not afraid to stand up for myself. Many times I've been in this situation, just learn a few good one-liners and make them look dumb in front of their coworkers, they'll live to regret it.
