eBay Voucher Cannot Be Used on The Day It Expires?

Hi fellow OzBargainers.

not sure if this has happened to anyone before.

  • I renewed my eBay Plus membership in light of this https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/497553
  • However, instead of getting the $30 Gift card, I was given $20 instead.
  • After a difficult chat (eBay didn't want to acknowledge that I clicked the "button"), they sent me a $20 voucher on top. I was under the impression I would be given a gift card (expiry 3 years?).

  • I got back from holidays and to see that the voucher had an expiry date of 10/01/2020 (1-month expiry).
went onto eBay to rush to buy something and not let the $20 go to waste

  • only realise that that the voucher was "greyed out" and deemed expired when I tried to use it today at 11 pm (10/01/2020).

Voucher T&C:
"Expiry. The coupon expires on the End Date specified in the email and/or via My Messages. Any coupon which is not redeemed by 23:59 (AEST) on such End Date will cease to be valid."

my thoughts:
- that the voucher would expire at the end of the day. I attempted to finalise the purchase at 11 pm (Melb). I thought this is equivalent to 10 pm AEST?

my questions:
- is it standard for vouchers to not be used on the day of the expiry? (my impression was that it would expire at the end of the day)

  • if this has happened to others before, any luck with chatting to eBay in assisting with this?

  • Any coupon which is not redeemed by 23:59 (AEST) on such End Date will cease to be valid.

According to the T’s and C’s you have until 23:59 (AEST) on the day of expiry to use the voucher otherwise it will: “Cease to be valid” aka expire.

EDIT (10/1, 11:48PM): AEST is 1 hour behind Melbourne time by the way.

I share that exact thought. eBay deemed the voucher expired when I try to checkout at 11 pm Melb (10pm AEST) hence my confusion

        I would do the following:

        1. Take a photo of the voucher showing as “invalid” (also make sure the current date/time is visible in the photo)

        2. Take a screenshot of where it says when the voucher expires (including the time it expires)

Then if you have any hassles you will have evidence.

cheers for the protip. I took 3 screenshots:
          - 2x attempt to purchase > (1) input code and (2) it "saying This code has expired."
          - (3) on the eBay dashboard: the greyed out voucher showing expiry and computer date/time

          • @Ruisu: Nice job, just be careful as they may pull out the “you changed you computer date/time” card.

@WoodYouLikeSomeCash: I would not imagine that being a card to even be played!
that said, I've also sent them a message directly (so there is a timestamp there too I guess.)

But it's currently 10:51 PM on the 10th in Qld?

Is it because atm we are in Daylight savings time ?
    Australian Eastern Daylight Time (AEDT)
rather than Australian Eastern Standard Time (AEST)

    Theres your missing Hour

Not sure if they changed it but Maccas offers used to say "Expires tomorrow" and then you got to use it tomorrow and find it expired, the day before.. like expires tomorrow meant it expired today.

Telstra SIM Starter Packs regularly expire before the printed expiry date. Nobody within Telstra could override the activation server and simply put the blame on "faulty" SIM cards. Then either you escalate the issue to the TIO, or find the old receipt to obtain a refund from the retailer.

    Expiry dates cannot be trusted.

I had a $10 eBay voucher that I tried to use late on the day of expiry and it had alreay expired. I contacted eBay on the same day, and they ended up giving me a $10 credit to my PayPal account.

  • just a quick update,

eBay issued another $20 dollar voucher via their message system.
they outlined that the voucher has an Expiration Date of: June 1, 2020, at 12:00 PM AEDST

Touch odd, as their t&c still says:
"The voucher expires on the end date specified in the voucher section of your My eBay account. Any voucher which is not redeemed by 23:59 (AEST) on such end date will cease to be valid."

and the expiry stated on my eBay account is: 01/05/20

Hard to take the word of eBay given the whole month discrepancy.

TL;DR: Use the voucher before the expiry date.
