Looking for a Fast & Powerful Charger

Hello folks,

I am looking for a fast/powerful charger such as this one CHOETECH USB C Charger, 72W available in Amazon for $53.99 Sadly there are no ozbargain deals for this model at the moment.

Its for charging my mobile phones (S10), powerbanks, gopro etc. I am not sure if this model would be able to charge a laptop.

Are there any other models that I need to consider within this price range which have USB-PD ?

Sorry my knowledge in these devices is very less and any help/suggestions is appreciated.

Cheers !

  • I guess from your description and price you as talking about this unit where it says;

The USB-C port with up to 60W Power Delivery

    Where as this one is $44.99, has more ports, including a QC3.0 port and the post says;

Quick charge 3.0 wall charger provides the fastest charging speed for your Samsung Galaxy… S10 S10E

From what I have read, the Galaxy S10 only supports PD 2.0 and is limited to 15w when charging. So, trying to stick 60w up its charge hole isnt going to net you any faster charging.

Read about a good comparison of charging protocols and the S10 Here

Or are you planning to run something else off the PD port, such as a MackBook or something similar that would need the 60w?

    • oh man thanks for your reply. Sorry I did not put up any links.

You are correct the $44.99 is the one I was referring to. Apart from the mobiles, I would love the charger to be able to charge the laptop in future.

Currently, I do not own a laptop but will be purchasing soon to go overseas and I am hoping to buy a charger which can charge a laptop as well.

Well, if that is the case, you would need to find out what the laptop needs in the way of charging and if it will take 60w USB-PD. If it does, then it limits your choice down even further.

I found this charger that might be better suited to your future proof needs and is cheaper. This deal has expired but you might be able to look around for this unit as an alternative and see if it comes up on sale again.

Also look up Anker and Blitzwolf to see if they have anything. I have both of these chargers at home (albeit not the USB-PD types) and they are good quality.

I just recently started doing a research on this for my upcoming trip so I hopefully can help you bit.

The first thing is the charging input your laptop requires vs the total output of the charger. If a laptop requires 65W and you have a 65W charger, you obviously can't have anything else plugged at the same time. My laptop is 45W so it should be fine charging a phone with QC 3.0 (18W) simultaneously. Not quite sure what happens if another device (e.g. a camera) is plugged in, it either won't start charging at all or the phone would switch to slow charging but the camera would be charged too. I think that each charger will differ in this but they don't always put this in specification.

This is probably obvious but I will add it here just to be sure - your laptop needs to support USB-C charging, you can't just take any laptop and try to charge it with your new charger. Be very careful as some laptop models might look the same but can actually vary, e.g. Lenovo Yoga 720 supports USB-C charging on its 13" model but not on 12", 14" or 15" (weird, right?).

There is a new generation of chargers using Gallium Nitride (GaN). They are much smaller so if size and weight is a concern, have a look at these.

Last thing is a cable cable. You will need a quality cable which handles the high voltage/amps. When I look at my laptop charger it says "20V/2.25A" or "15V/3A" which when multiplied give you 45W. You need a cable which has the same thing in its spec otherwise the charging won't work.
My frustration with these cables is that you can't easily get one longer than 2m. Again, this is only a problem when travelling, I don't want to carry around an extension cord with me; for home use you probably won't care that much.

As for the charger, this is my shortlist.

The last one is my preferred option at the moment, it also clearly describes all the power options for each slot and their combinations.

    Cables probably these:

This one is a 3m one but the seller doesn't ship to Australia.

    • Not 100% true. I have a laptop that needs a 230 watt (not volts) charger.

      That looks like this

I use a 90watt HP charger from last 2 years for this. This is around 40% of the suggested charger.

      I do get a warning
      "HP Smart Adapter
For full performance, connect a higher capacity AC adapter. "

But life goes on. Laptop has three internal drives in it as well.

    • Hey, nice reply - thanks for your info.
      Dell XPS 13 9380(requires 45 W USB (Type-C)
      LG V30 QC
      Maybe wireless headphones
Is what I need to charge.

I have a Xiaomi power bank 3 pro 20000 and a xpower charger with PD and some USB ports I got a long while ago now. which are okay and are fine for use locally with the above

However, I am looking for something with more juice to be able to charge the XPS 13 at the same time as quickly charging my LG v30 when abroad + maybe charging wireless headphones etc.
Along with a juiced-up wall, charger to charge all of the above.
Also would prefer a direct wall charger as opposed to a figure 8 separate one.
      Euro input adapter/option needed
Lightweight is important but of course the power for the above.
Power output over capacity in terms of importance
thinking Will need output of ~70w for both battery and charger?

Happy to spend more to get the most suitable option

      What are your thoughts?
