SodaStream Source $99 + $10 Delivery ($0 C&C or with $100 Spend) @ David Jones

90

This is the slightly fancier version of the standard and is compatible with the newer bottles. Also allows for 3 levels of fizziness apparently, not that you couldn’t do this with the older types by just holding the button down longer.

Also, now owned by Pepsi and no longer manufactured in illegal West Bank settlements apparently,

Depends on how much booze you mix with it…

Damn, you beat me to it by seconds

Autocorrect strikes again, if yo inhale the gas direct from the bottle I’m sure it will oblige though

  • Can I sparkle my vodka in this? 🤭

    • Just don't try and sprkle juice, it foams like crazy

      • lol yeah I tried to do apple juice once. So delicious but you cant put much in.

  • The real question is can I make diamond water with it?

Or save money, effort and benchtop clutter by buying soda water at 60c/l from the supermarket.
    (Are PET bottles still recycled?)

    • +3

How is that saving money? My soda water costs me around 8c a litre.

How is that saving effort? I don't have to lug around 1.25kg bottle of stuff I get out of my tap! Oh … and then the effort of having to travel to the recycling depot to get your 10c back!

Bench top clutter? Sure, maybe there is some of that, depending on how and where you set it up. Mine doesn't clutter anything though.

If you're buying any more than 3 or 4 bottles a week, a well set-up Sodastream becomes much cheaper in the long run.

Still … get the cheapest unit you can find. All the fancy stuff is just more that can go wrong.

Normally 30c/l for cylinder exchange, so you are one of those rare people who both uses enough, and is smart enough, to hook up a large CO2 tank.

In reality, most people never swap enough cylinders to pay off the capital cost. ("3 or 4 bottles a week" as you say, for a few years - certainly doable.)

On the whole, I'd say sodastream is more environmentally friendly.

It is if intentions are followed through, and you actually use it frequently for years.

        • I would think a lot of potential users would drink enough to warrant the tank approach.

Sadly, it's people like you who just rubbish the whole idea of a Sodastream without providing any helpful insights (which you clearly have)that are the problem.

Your post was just silly, given you know it was all a load of hogwash!

          • @photonbuddy: Calm down. The truth is that very, very few buyers hook up a tank.
Am not denying the exceptions like your good self.

Also I know of one person who bought it because they lived remotely, with no recycling. That makes sense.

            • @bargaino: Very very few people bought the original Hyundai Excel because people kept saying just how rubbish they were. Of course, most of those people had never actually owned one, because those of us who did, or knew someone who did, had a completely different view of things.

I suggest it's you that needs to calm down, and stop rubbishing something just for the sake of it.

              • @photonbuddy: Alan Bond's late-80's $9999 import? Well, it was kind of crap, but damn it was cheap. I think the argument was comparing to a second hand car as there was nothing better new at the same price.

But the original Hyundai Excel did not require exchanging the fuel tank at great expense when empty :-)

Tell that to the guy who put 300,000 K's on his, and apart from the usual replacements that occur on every car, he did go through 3 clutches …

But then … it was a driving instructors car!

It was brilliant! Plenty of oomph for such a cheap car, well equipped as well. He did have to pay extra to go from the 4 sp manual to the 5 sp though.

        • You've clearly never looked at the costs as with the 6kg you could throw away the adapter and refillable gas tank everytime and it still costs less than half as much.

          6kg tank and adapter = $131.

          400g refill = $20

          6kg / 400g = 15

          15 x $20 = $300

A 2.6kg will only save you $9 if you throw it all away each time at $121 for 6.5 * 400g = $130.

          • @Rutger: Clearly? You assume too much, and don't actually read what I said.

I've actually posted links to Kegland before.

    • money

There's ways to make sodastream more economical - buying generic refills or refilling yourself. It's not for everyone.

      effort

There's some effort involved in getting the bottles from your supermarket to your home.

      Are PET bottles still recycled?

Even though the PET bottles can be recycled, there's still an environmental cost. On the whole, I'd say sodastream is more environmentally friendly.

    • 72c/L from coles/woolworths.

    • I shared your thinking till I did the math.

      1.25L @ coles/wollies = $0.90 @ $0.72 per Litre

      Tap water rate
      $0.01 per Litre
      (https://australianmuseum.net.au/blog-archive/science/say-no-…)

Assuming you buy a Soda stream for $100

Equivalent cost in 1.25L fizzy bottles = 111 units

      111 Units = 138.75 Litres (111*1.25L)

      138.75 Litres @ tap water rate = $1.387

Thus in favour of Soda stream.

      HOWEVER..
Assuming the machine will last that long, you drink that much water and get refills CO2 for a decent price.

  • I added some $2 tongs to get the free delivery,

Since the Cottee's flavours are now no longer 9:1, they have dropped off the list if you want to mix in the bottle. Diet Rite still do 9:1 for their flavours though, and are cheaper than Cottee's unless the Cottee's are on special.

I used to buy the raspberry Sodastream flavour as a treat every now and then, but since they changed the packaging a while back, it lost it's lovely taste.

I haven't tried any of the Sodaking flavours yet.
