Is This Good Enough for a Uni Laptop?

Hey everyone,

need a new laptop for uni. I have a decent desktop PC at home so am just looking for something small-ish that I can carry around easily enough. I found this Kogan one and will be putting an SSD in it, but I'm worried that 4gb of ram isn't enough these days? It'll mostly just be for typing so I assume it should be OK?

Otherwise I saw this one but it's bigger, has a lower resolution screen but has 8gb of ram.

What do you think of these two laptops? Or if you guys have any recommendations for something in a similar price range, please let me know.

8gb RAM minimum. But also, I wouldn't be buying a laptop from Kogan. Plenty of better on-shore stores with good value machines.

    Eg https://www.centrecom.com.au/hp-245-g7-6vz52pa-14-amd-e2-900…

    • Thanks. I've never heard of cenrecom before. Are they any good?

      • Have dealt eith them and they're good from my own exp

Always good when I've bought from them. You can also check JB HIFI for the security of a big brand store.

Second the minimum 8GB RAM; you'll need it when you open up multiple sources to write your essays

You're going to have a really bad time when it comes to returns from Kogan, better to buy directly from the manufacturer (e.g Dell, HP Australia or Lenovo.com) or from your local Umart or MSY.

If you can stretch the budget a little you could buy a $598 Acer Aspire 5 which has the current 10-th gen Core i3, 128GB SSD / 8GB RAM (same price on Amazon). Refurb laptops from Dell outlet also something worth looking at.

    • Just saw that Acer Aspire 5 right after I posted it.
I had a quick look at the refurb Dell laptops but nothing caught my eye. I will have another look after work.

  • Have a look on Gumtree, In particular the Dell Latitude series.

Please buy locally and cash on meet up only. For the love of Jesus please don't do it any other way.

Another 'I got scammed on Gumtree' thread in the making.

    • I'd rather not buy off Gumtree because dealing with people can be a bit of a pain lol

  • How about buying a tablet? This should suffice if it’s just for typing and probably be lighter.

  • Why not get a refurb E6540 for the same price with double the ram

  • 4gb is enough. Unless you are doing gaming or rendering. By uni I'm guessing you mean usual stuff like internet and word.
Maybe be a bit more specific with what you want it for as even a mobile phone can handle uni work.
