Help Understanding Travel Insurance PDS

I am currently overseas in a country where the electrical grid is extremely unstable and unfortunately my laptop was damaged by a power surge and won't turn on anymore.

I have travel insurance, but the PDS says that the travel insurance doesn't cover electrical or mechanical breakdowns. Does that mean power surge damage isn't covered?

  • Unlikely. That sounds like it refers to other equipment. Post a link to the PDS.

    • Description updated with PDS link

      • That section seems vehicle related

  • My reading of the PDS suggests that the damage won't be covered, but the only way to know for sure is to make a claim.

  • Does that mean power surge damage isn't covered?

    Looks like it,

Are you sure its just not the power pack that has died?

Any lights on the power pack? When you get home, get a Volt meter which will tell you whats happening, measure the tip and see if its putting out the right DC voltage.

    • Power pack is probably cheaper than the claim excess

      • Yeah cheap as chips and cheaper than any excess. I guess it depends if the OP is happy with the current laptop or wants a insurance 'upgrade'.

    • Everything is dead, power pack included. I have a volt meter with me and everything is definitely dead

      • As in Battery and charger have 18V and the laptop won't power? or the battery and and powerpack has not voltage on them? It may be worth taking the laptop in for a repair. It's unlikely that travel insurance will pay up for.

        • Battery has the correct voltage and borrowed charger has correct voltage.

I will repair it myself when I get back home if the claim doesn't go through.

      • if the power pack is dead, then try a replacement power pack.

You can't call the laptop dead until you try it on a working power pack, its most likely just gone flat.

        • I have tried it with a working power pack and the battery has a full charge.

          • @triviums: For someone on 'holidays' you're well equipped. I'm impressed.

Anyhow, lodge a claim and see what they say. We can't help you, its all in the PDS.

I would lodge the claim. There doesn't seem to be a definition of Breakdown in the PDS, but 1Cover has a decent policy.

FYI Machinery Breakdown is usually related to other machines, laptops and Electronic Equipment and pretty much all but the worst of policies cover Laptops and Phones for this type of claim.
