Dell Optiplex 9020 SFF - Video Card Won't Fit

I purchased this PC from recommendations on OzBargain - Dell Optiplex 9020 SFF i5-4570 QC 3.20Ghz 8GB RAM 128GB SSD Win 10 Desktop PC

and then I got this part Gigabyte GTX1050Ti 4GB OC Low Profile GV-N105TOC-4GL

I took to the computer shop today to get the video card installed and he told me this won't fit. Anyone know if it's tricky to install and maybe he didn't know how or anyone in Sydney (North Shore or Castle hill Area) that I could pay to help me get this installed?

At a loss now as I spent $200 on this video card that should fit but doesn't. Also did supply the computer shop with the smaller bracket as I know the box came with two.

That looks a little hard me me. I don't know anything about computers! I'm just happy to pay someone!

      • If you're only upgrading the video card, it's only relevant from 6:20 onwards. Literally plug and play.

I might be in the area next few weekends, be happy to help if you want to figure out a time? Full disclosure: I do this stuff purely as a hobby.

        • Wont fit, PCI 16X is bottom lane, but GFX needs top lane to fit and blocked by PSU. Bad advice buying these two together.

          • @Bid Sniper: Graphics cards will work on less PCIE lanes unless you're saying it physically won't fit? It'll still be an upgrade over the onboard.

Sorry just read this and I really appreciate you offering to help. I managed to get it in. Now just need to adapter as my monitor won't connect. Ordered that and fingers crossed!!

      • Incredibly easy! I haven't even built a PC and can easily remove a GPU and a hard drive or a CPU and such and such. The gloves make it look intimidating, but you don't need gloves.

  • Picked up one of these off the side of the road with an i7 hoping to change out the graphics card. Had the same issue and cut my losses because there's no way an upgraded video card will fit in there as its a small form factor ex business PC with a narrow card slot which next to nothing will fit. The length of the graphics card was fine, just the clip where the HDMI in/out was waaaaaay too narrow

    • Indication on this post that fits very tightly… https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/455363
      I really hope there's a way!

      • You might have to do it yourself because a computer shop is going to worry about liability with that tight of a fit with a used system that they can't confirm the condition of.

    • It's a single slot PCIE slot which will mean very limited cards will fit, ergo the recommendation to only try low profile gtx1050s.

  • not sure how, but a VGA riser cable may help part of it. Search for the other parts on aliexpress.

  • a PCIE riser cable would be the only way to attach your GPU to the motherboard if you cannot fit it inside the case.

I've got the same desktop with the same GPU.

The GPU goes into the PCIe 4x slot (Black Slot) and not the PCIe 16x slot (Blue).

Also make sure to life the back tab, so you can install the GPU.

Here's a YouTube video of a GPU being installed in the 9020 SFF

    • Just helped a mate with the same dilemma and discovered that the Optiplex 9020 SFF motherboard can only take a maximum of 25W on the PCIe 4x slot. The PCIe 16x slot, however, has a maximum wattage of 35W - source: Optiplex 9020 Technical Guidebook, p27. Many GPUs will struggle with the inadequate power.

Note that not all Optiplex SFF models are the same. The previous generation 9010 SFF has 25W and 50W slots respectively (source). These guides also provide max PCI card dimensions in case you're interested.

The good thing about some of these OEM desktops is that the documentation is in-depth and the community of support is vast. Dell even releases BIOS updates in 2020 for these 8+ year-old systems! Hard to beat if you're keen on the small form-factor design.

The trick to turning these into respectable gaming machines is to not over-spend, especially with the current price of parts. Pick one up cheap and scrounge around for bargain upgrades.

I have a 9010 which was no problem at all to install a 1050ti LP graphics card in (with zero computer building experience), so could you maybe look at 'downgrading' to a 9010 for minimal changeover cost?

Also by the time you add up your expenditure and the potential cost for someone to install/fix it now, you are probably better off just looking at one of the Techfast machines around $6-700.

  • I had no problem fitting a low profile GTX1050

    • in the exact same computer model Mikk?

  • Anyone know if there is a way to install a graphics card and a internal Bluetooth and WIFI card. Any advice would be good. I am looking at the i7 version, but they seem to have the same boards. The PCIe seem to have 1x4 and 1x16. Any advice would be great

    • I'm pretty sure there's not enough physical space for a graphic cards + a Wi-Fi/Bluetooth Card in the SFF (Small Form Factor).

Even the Graphic Cards installs into the 1x4 slot, as there's not enough space to fit into the 1x16 slot due to PSU.
