Things to Take Care While Registering a .com.au Website?

Hello

I have a plan in my mind to do an internet based service business. Nothing big, planning to launch it in a very small scale. And that too, after 6-10 months. Before that, I need to buy a .com.au domain. I have a questionregarding this.

As of now, I just want to concentrate on building the website. Creating good content and doing seo and stuff. No business planned at the moment. Obviously I need to have an ABN number while registering the domain, I understand-as it is a .com.au website. Do I have to sign up for GST now? I reckon I saw an option on the domain registrar website asking whether I’m gonna pay gst or not -if yes, select an option which needs me to pay $49 in addition. I’m not doing any business right as mentioned.

Or do I just go ahead and purchase a .com.au website without taking care of GST? I don’t want to get into any legal issues. If someone who has any insight could help me out, it would be much appreciated. Thanks!

I am under the impression you do not need an ABN to register a domain name. Equally, you do not need to worry about registering for GST unless you have a turnover of over $A75,000 pa.

You don't exactly need an ABN there's eligibility requirements that you can satisfy that would make you eligible for a .com.au domain name just the ABN is the easiest way to qualify for a com.au. Full eligibility requirements here

Unfortunately, currently you do for .com.au unless you want to take the root of meeting one of the other eligibility requirements.

Yep there should be no need for the OP to register for GST unless they're over there earning threshold.

  • Yes, u must have an ABN to register fr com.au. You must take [Masking ur personal details' package that needs few more bucks to pay. Godaddy registrar have sometimes, specials, check with them.

Actually offering such a service on a .au domain name is against the registry policy set between the registrar and auDA.

  • Just register for PAYG. You may as well get an ABN now as you'll need it in future and you need it for the domain.

Yep you're going to need an ABN to start with to register the .au domain as someone said unless you're going to be earning a serious amount of money they will be no need to register for GST Immediately/initially. I would question any registrar that's charging you $49 in GST as a .au domain shouldn't even be that expensive that $49 in GST would be owing. Check out zuver $10.50 including the GST per year.
