Just what every kid needs but every parents worst nightmare due to the sound.

Electronic drum kit with headphones sounds like a parent's dream

      • Yep

It's all about the treble, no bass.

Given my 5yr old daughter starts drum lessons this Friday I think its a sign. Poorly timed sign due to lack of $ but a sign nonetheless.

  • Soooo, are that any good? I was planning on buying a used acoustic guitar (steel strings) on Gumtree, just a cheap one, but maybe these are good enough for my needs. I have bought some things from also in the past and quality had been pretty good for the price.

I would NEVER recommend instruments from shops like aldi, if you want a proper instrument go to a music shop/website and get familiar with the different brands. Keep in mind each instrument is different to each person, you have to go and try them out to see if you like them. Always research as every instrument is different and specific to a style of music e.g. guitars have different types of pick ups which create different types of sounds specific to the style of music. Additionally don’t think you have to spend a lot to get something decent, there’s plenty of cheaper brands which are good enough.

On gumtree, its a bit risky if you don’t already have basic knowledge on the type of instruments you want as you can easily get ripped off.

Gumtree is awesome for used instruments. But there is some know how involved to makes sure you aren't getting ripped off. Plenty of good deals, but also plenty of duds and dreamers. Look up some buyers guides on the net. The worst thing on a used guitar is a twisted neck, so look out for that. Get something newish for less issues in general (5 years - 10 years old max). My top picks for the used budget range are yamaha f310 ~$80. Yamaha fg700 (or similar model) ~$150. Look for something with decent action - if it needs a set up thats $50 which kills the value.

Without having played or seen one, the aldi one is probably pure junk.
Good luck and don't hesitate to ask if you have any questions.

      • Thanks! That's really useful information. I'll look for those price ranges and models. I knew about the action, I started playing with a really bad guitar whose strings were really high and it made it hard to play, so having a decent action is a must for me now. :-)

We bought a 3/4 acoustic (nylon strings) last year for our son to learn on and found it quite good for the money. I don't think I'd risk the brass instruments though.

FWIW - subjective review for Huxley guitars from 2018 here

          • @ShortyX: Thanks for that linked review. I might get one. Been missing my guitar terribly since I sold it (a 1975 K.Yairi Acoustic)… hope the current batch is as good as you suggest.

      • Yamaha fg700 $75 on Gumtree right now, however the F310

As a music teacher please do not buy these. We had two trumpets come through our school even the students noticed how hard they were to play and asked for their school ones back. I have heard similar from other teachers about the guitars and clarinets. 1. Talk to the instrumental teacher. 2. Buy a quality brand. 3. If a teacher finds it hard to play imagine what it is like for a child!

    • Thanks, this is the information i was looking for. Since you know about instruments, can you advise of any good acoustic guitar (steel strings) brands to buy here in Australia? I've just relocated here and have been wanting to buy one for some time. I'm thinking about getting a used one on Gumtree.

    • Can you explain why it would be harder to learn on this guitar ?

      • +1

Because the Aldi guitars are so crap they don't even stay in tune. The kids will think they are the reason it's awful, and get put off.

I tried one once and promptly took it back for a refund. Absolute junk.

      • Badly setup, high action, which means the strings are too high and makes it harder to press down. Makes the beginner more likely to give up.

Among other things, Google for more ideas

I would definitely recommend buying a second hand name brand guitar, much more comfortable to play. Good balance between price and something that won't be given up quickly.

  • anyone any know anything about electric drums can advise?

    • I heard that they make some noise

Nosolid body eletrics, amps or pedals again this year. Surmising they must have sold poorly in the past requiring slashed price remaindering. Shame, the blue Teles were decent kit, unbelievably so for $99.

  • +1

Idk about the percussion and strings, but cheap woodwind and brass always sound bad. If you're chasing a clarinet a used yamaha or leblanc (seem to go super cheap) off gumtree would be a better option and only a bit more expensive.

  • What no larger phones this year ?????

  • Anyone have any advice for someone who wants to give drums a go? Never played before.

    • Do you have good coordination? Able to tap with your left-hand, whilst tapping with your right foot.

      • +1

I like to think so. I'm a bit of a gun at Beat Saber if that's any correlation 😎

        • I'd say there is some correlation - that is people who are good at Beat Saber are likely to be better at drumming than a people who are sh*t at Beat Saber. Obviously note there is the added co-ordination requirement of having your two feet on the go too.

    • +3

      See how go with this:

      Count to 4 in time
(Eg: Back in Black - AC/DC)

On every count, tap your right knee
On counts 2 and 4, tap your left knee
On counts 1 and 3, stomp your right foot

If you can do this, congratulations - you can play almost every rock song!

      • Oh, I see. You were lampooning me. It was a simple lampoon.

Only the drum stool, keyboard stool and keyboard stand worth the price. For instruments, go for branded ones.

  • Whole catalog is up on Lassoo now if you need clear images

  • Years ago the guitars were surprisingly good. Quality went down year after year and I am guessing the trend will continue.

Anyone buy the drum kit last time able to comment? I suspect it was more of a toy than an instrument.

    • I saw a second hand acoustic a few years back at an auction. It seemed ok. Probably better with a strong they wasn't broken.

  • Disappointed. No capos or slides. Off to ebay.

  • Wondering how is the drum kits.

I did play a bit with my XBox 360 drum kit MIDI connected to a Roland v-drum from a friend.

  • Simply Music.

Started my daughter in 2008. She played great whilst learning. Not the best practicer, so you know.

She now reads & writes her own music.
