Need a New Car for My Mum

Hi guys, hope everyone is doing well.
Today we sold my mums 2004 Ford Territory, it was a great reliable car and it was hard to let it go. However, since my brother has his P's we need something a bit more fuel efficient and easier to park.
Now the car we need to buy will be driven my both my mum and brother. My mum doesn't drive much, maybe once a fortnight, but she wants to something easy to drive and with a lot of space. She really liked the Ford since the interior was open and pretty spacious.
My brother just wants something that looks modern, with nice interior design. His favourite cars are all European, but obviously we can't buy anything like that.
Now the budget is pretty open, we sold the Ford for around 4k, but I'm pretty sure my parents are willing to add up to 3-4k on top, maybe more depending on the car.
It's obviously needs to be reliable, and easy to maintain. My dad has a tendency to spend a bit less on his cars. He currently still drives his LPG BA falcon with 350 000kms!
TL:DR
Need a 6k-10k car which is reliable, spacious and easy to park and handle being driven by my brother.
So what our options?

Thanks OzBargain 👍

    Corolla

    /thread

    • Totally agree

      • Corolla seems a little to small, I was thinking more a sedan type with a spacy interior.

        • +1

          Corolla comes in sedan

But at the end of the day, isn't it just 1-2 people in the car?

          • +7

@spackbace: What about the start of the day, there might be more then?

          Aurion

        I genuinely lol'd.

Brother can have an opinion dependant on how much coin he’s chipping in

However, since my brother has his P's we need something a bit more fuel efficient and easier to park.

If your brother can't park a ford territory then he should hand back the license, brother needs better fuel economy drive a bit more sedately or cough more for fuel if he does more miles. You probably had the best car and got rid of it to pander to your brother?

No mere sedan whatever the make is going to provide the space that mum loves and 10k won't get the more modern "fashionable" car brother wants

mind you it's just my opinion, not a solution

    • To be fair the petrol Terrys are a bit thirsty. A newer diesel SZ would be ideal, kinda want one myself.

      • +1

Fair point, but we mainly got rid of it since it drank alot of fuel. Before it was great , when my mum drove regularly and it was carrying 5-7 people. But now it's just too expensive to keep, especially as it's km's are increasing and usually carrying only 1 or 2 people.

    i30

    /thread

    • Actually a good shout, but a bit scared on its reliability and cost of repairs, our mechanic said to only buy Ford Falcons or Toyotas 😂

      • +2

Because it's easy for them to work on. Not cheaper for you. Not easier in general. Just easy for them.

I think your mech might be a bit narrow minded

our mechanic said to only buy Ford Falcons

Then you need to get a new mechanic.

    • Second the i30; I'm normally a Corolla person, but when I had the i30 as my hire car, it was the first car I actually would consider buying instead of another Corolla

      • Same another upvote for i30

      • I third the i30, maybe the wagon for the extra space mum needs. Diesel or petrol engine, good reliability (FD autos were a bit funny when new but should all be fixed now). Goes well with price range.

Still has a good 200k clicks in her

Why? Its your mothers car not his, tell your lazy brother to get his own car and pay for his own fuel.

My brother just wants something that looks modern, with nice interior design. His favourite cars are all European,

As above, he can buy his own car. Who cares what he wants.

I think you mum would really like a Ford Territory, great reliable car, easy to drive and with a lot of space. I think she would really like the Ford interior as it is open and pretty spacious.

    • Yeah…. but dayum, that fuel economy! Holy shit the Ford Territory was a thirsty beast.

      • the Ford Territory was a thirsty beast.

She only drives it once a fortnight so ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

        • Yeah, but the brother is now driving, so that means its probably going back to every day driving. Would have to mortgage the house to pay for fuel once Jr. start giving it a boot full.

          • +3

@pegaxs: Want a free car to drive, you pay for the fuel. Don't like that, get your own car. The 'brother' sounds like a spoilt brat to me.

They are spending an extra $4k to buy a car so the brother saves money on fuel, that buys a lot of 'fuel' for mum on her fortnight drive.

            • @JimmyF: "But I want a VW and I want it NOW!"

They should have kept mum's car for her, and given the brother $3k shitter to ruin

              • @pegaxs:

They should have kept mum's car for her, and given the brother $3k shitter to ruin

Agreed…. The brother is a P Plate, so highly likely they might have a few dings in the near future (based on statistics).

    • +3

Exactly this. You sold your mums car, which was reliable and that your mum liked, only drove once a fortnight so fuel economy wasn't important all because it didn't suit your brother? That's bloody cold hearted.

    Kia Cerato

    /thread

    • I picked one of these up as a hire car today while my car is getting some hail damage repaired. It reminds me of decaffeinated coffee.

  • +4

Tell your brother to buy his own damn car.

  • What does ‘a lot of space’ mean? Does the vehicle need to carry lots of stuff, or just feel spacious for one or two people. There is a big difference between the two.

Also, might seem harsh, but does your mum need extra space over the average person? Meaning a hatchback that is spacious for some may not feel big enough.

  • +2

Came for the Corolla/Camry/i30/Cerato suggestions. Faith in humanity, restored.

Now, just waiting for the "VW Golf/Audi A4/Subaru WRX/Skoda Whocares/BMW 320i/etc" suggestions to turn up for shits and giggles.

PS: Tell your brother to buy his own Euro shitbox.

    • Not only that will he also pay for the higher insurance costs? A P Plater in a BMW/Audi etc etc

Sounds like he wants to go go go. Which to an insurance co is NO NO NO

    I suggest a fiat. A fiat 500.

    • +1

      Excellent choice!

      • They are very cute.

        • +1

And have Fiat reliability which is leaps and bounds ahead of a Smart

          • +1

@Euphemistic: If only we knew someone who has owned both and could do a comparison for us…

            • +2

@pegaxs: Who'd be stupid enough to do that, though?

    • I suggest a fiat. A fiat 500.

Don't be excessive. A Reliant Robin clearly fits the bill without being needlessly over-sized.

  • What about some variant of a Kia Sportage or the Mitzi ASX?, or if you have to, a Camry? but I can't stand them!.

    • +3

Can't stand a Camry but likes the asx. Does not compute.

  • +3

Territory and reliable in the same sentence….now I have seen everything.
(Foolish enough to have owned two yes two territories in my time)

    • +1

Yes, swap one 2004 car for another!

      • Sounds like the 2004 was perfect for some but not for the young. Where is your heart at.

  • Get them a moped each ;-)
