  • Anyone tried these? Are they any good?

    • +6

They are WAAAAAAAAAY too salty, taste is right if you can even it out but I don’t buy these anymore because of the salt

      • +3

One way around that is to boil them, instead of fry in a pan. Then use the stock (if it's any good) later, just freeze it in containers

    • +14

Worst food purchase of 2019 (and what little of 2020) for me… absolutely vile. Forced myself to eat one and had to bin the other as even lashings of different sauces/cheese etc couldn't cover up such a disgusting taste.

On the other hand all of the following are better:
Quorn, Fry's, Beyond meat, Rebel whopper, HJ vegan cheeseburger, Grill'd burgers

    • They smell terrible.

    • Their schnitzels are really good, but never tried these patties before.

    • these taste so bad

    • +5

I've tried their 'beef' burgers. Meh. Same ol' over-processed junk with an ingredient list as long as your arm. Isolated this, modified that, with lashings of hydrogenated coconut oil. Yum yum.

Gimme a decent bean and veg burger any day. The black bean and sweet potato ones from Coles are decent — simple ingredients and next to no fat, so I don't feel guilty about bunging a slice of cheese on 'em.

As far as processed frankenburgers go, the Quorn Hot & Spicy burgers are worth picking up on special. They go alright.

  • Made from meaty plant proteins

    Yum???

  • +23

I am vegan and these are NOT good. I would not recommend anything in this range - even my son who is a huge fan of faux meats doesn't like them.

    • What sort of things do you recommend?

    • +1

I would however recommend the DIY unreal packs in the health section as you decide what spices go into the 'meat'. I wasn't a fan of the pre made ones but this was surprisingly much better

  • +8

Yeah I'm vegan as well and their products are garbage. Wouldn't recommend.

  • +1

    Yuck

  • these are really good,

just make sure you buy real chicken mince burgers to do a side by side test

  • I tried another of their products - wasn't a fan of the taste.

    • +2

If you could have lab grown chicken meat vs. killing a real chicken for its meat, which would you prefer?

I'd take the option for the same product without the harm of life.

      • Yeah sure, but this isnt that.

This is plant + chicken flavour.

        • your normal is someone else’s exception.

        • +2

You’re talking about that “real” chicken that is pumped with hormones and antibiotics? Yeah real healthy stuff there ya bellend.

        • I'm pretty sure Vegans have issues with Halal too. Because, say it with me, it's still killing and eating an animal.

You know who doesn't have an issue with Halal? Those who want Halal. They're 2 very different demographics.

Self righteous vegans are annoying, but ignorant comments like yours are just as annoying. I'd argue it's probably an underlying racism against muslims since you're targeting Halal and that's their demographic, but regardless it was a stupid and ignorant comparison.

          • @Snorkel2226:

probably an underlying racism against muslims since you're targeting Halal and that's their demographic,

            Muslim isn't a race.

He is saying that Halal is a more inhumane way of killing animals and he's wondering why vegans don't seem to have an issue with it.

            • @ozhunter: Read my first line again.

The reference btw to racism is more geared towards the demography behind Muslim i.e. middle eastern races, however i accept bigotry would have been a more suitable word for clarity purposes.

Regardless, i specifically said that "i'd argue it's probably underlying racism" not because i believe they blatantly just have an issue with Muslims but more so it was a contributing factor to them signalling out Halal, when - "I'm pretty sure Vegans have issues with Halal too. Because, say it with me, it's still killing and eating an animal." (Here i am referring to that first line that you missed).

Maybe i have to spell it out more explicitly: Vegans have issues with all animal/animal bi-products. It is not exclusive to regular butchered meats and that they completely ignore Halal. Of course they don't. It's a stupid comment. Also refer line second line where i further mentioned that ones without issues with Halal are those who want Halal rather than Vegans…

      • +3

I'm all for death. It's the natural way of life.
The way we treat them while they are alive is the issue, not the eating animals for food part.

        • -1

But you can’t separate the two - once upon a time, domesticated animals were well treated before slaughter, but it’s not like that anymore and with current level of demand, it never will.
No one who respects life can be anything but vegan.

    • +4

Agreed, these products are targeted at people who like meat but want to substitute a meat meal from now and then.
These however are way to salty.
Rebel burger at HJ’s is by far the best fake meat ever.
      Next is sanitarium “not burgers”
      And then Quorn chicken peices.

      • Rebel Burger was better than a regular whopper. Really good combo of spices. I'm not a vegan and I also don't pretend to eat healthy though.

Haven't tried any of the others, I've seen the Quorn stuff, so that's probably next.

        • I had my first ever normal whopper today and it was freaking disgusting and stupidly expensive. How is HJs still in business?

      • +4

Have you tried the Linda Mccartney? Only available at Woolies. For me, amazing product! Delicious burger! Just wondering if someone liked that as me.

        • +1

The mozzarella one is truly incredible

        • +1

          Love their sausages too!

        • Let it be

    • +1

i'm not a vegan and this product is genuinely trash :(

  • -4

Get your ultra-processed foodalikes here! Healthy because it's not meat!

    • +2

why do you assume people are buying burgers for health reasons

  • -5

Try my Vege Burgers (Meat Based), much tastier.

    • +1

the vege burger patties from woolies are actually nice, we have them at least once a week you slap some tomato and bacon on top in a bread roll…. very tasty!

      • I have had them too. Quite nice.

  • i eat meat but i sometimes eat these subs

  • +1

I tried this. Hmmm not as good as I remember chicken. Some of the next gen vegan beef burgers taste close to the real thing. From memory the next gen beef patties even had gristle bits which was a bit too realistic for my liking. These are good for transitioning vegans who need a fix, but I prefer a simple trail mix fruit and nuts, or baked purple sweet potato dusted with chilli powder, or a simple vegan curry over these faux foods. Even a plain simple salad. A decent dish that is what it is, is always better for me than a food trying to be something else. There are too many numbers trying to taste like a different product here… Just what is a vegan egg replacement or vegan chicken flavour anyway? Why not list the actual ingredients? It sure aint chicken, it it sure doesn't taste like the herbs and spices in my kitchen. Still if you are a transitioning vegan, these might be the ticket.

  • +1

Not sure wtf all these bad reviews are on about!

To me, these tasted exactly like the hungry jacks chicken burgers.

Their “meat” patties are also very similar to beyond patties!

These imo are probably the most realistic fake chicken patties I’ve had and I’ve tried a lot!

As someone mentioned, vegans that have never eaten meat probably won’t like it because it is so real.

People transitioning from meat to vegetarianism/veganism it is very close to the real thing.

    • +1

Wow…your review make myself buy one this asap!

    • +2

vegans that have never eaten meat probably won’t like it because it is so real.

      How would they know?

  • Nah this whole brand is stodgy and awful. I'm a huge fan of fake meat (it's vegetarian/vegan junk food for those who claim they don't get it). The only falsified meat product I've tried that has ended up mostly piffed in the bin for being ghastly. Most brands have a bad one or two items but this entire range is inedible.

  • -7

Why vegans eating food that looks like meat?

    • +9

Because it's tasty and it wasn't alive once. Not really a particularly challenging concept.

    • Because vegans has no problems with meat taste…

  • -1

How do they make fake meat

  • Not very good, stay away from these they taste awful

  • Slider lol

  • -1

    Whats the ingredient?
Some fake chicken is mycoprotein and can cause an allergic reaction

    • It says it's made from meaty plant proteins.

  • Anyone want to break down the actual ingredients to determine whether these are actually healthy?

Water, Protein [Soy, Pea, Rice], Starches [Corn, Potato, Rice], Fats [Canola, Coconut], Vegan Chicken Flavoring, Sugar, Vegan Egg Replacer [Maltodextrin, Fibre [Bamboo, Methylcellulose], Gums [Xanthan, Guar]], Fermented Rice, Nutritional Yeast, Herbs and Spices [Black Salt, Smoked Paprika, Black Pepper, Sage, All Spice, Basil, Oregano, Saffron], Citric Acid, Potassium Sorbate

    • Healthy: water, fermented rice, nutritional yeast, and the spices.

Not so healthy: all the proteins (refined), the fats (likely refined coconut oil, maybe even hydrogenated), the fibres (again refined), and pretty much everything else.

  • +2

I think the packaging has less artifical ingredients

  • I tried today. Wouldnt buy again but it wasnt too bad for its price.
