Optus 4G Wi-Fi Modem (E5577) with 4GB $14.95 @ Coles (Limited Stock)

650

Usually a popular deal at $29.50 but looks to be even cheaper now. Found at Coles Kardinya (WA) but assume it is nationwide, though YMMV.

It's National wide, but went to 4 Coles all "No stock", strangely the $99 50GB have stock.

  • Are these easy enough to unlock?

    • Gotta use the router for 6 months or recharge for $80 via Optus and they'll give you a code or something. Just recently contacted support about it.

      • If you are nice enough or get the right chat operator they might do the form for you to get one sent.
Took about a week and I got emailed one. Will be using in Bali :)

        • I purchased E5577 but have not activated yet.

Do I have to activate the modem with OPTUS first BEFORE asking for the unlock code from OPTUS?

          • @utsc: Yes device needs to be activated first. When you receive the code place a Simcard that is not with Optus and there will be an option in the router login page to unlock the device.

        • Spent over 2 hours on chat with 8 different support agents. Two of them told me they'd unlocked it, but it still showed "SIM lock" on the screen. Then a couple more agents passed me on to others since they said they were unable to help. Then lost chat connection a couple more times. Eventually spoke to an agent who insisted that they would have given an unlock code, but the system prevented them from getting the unlock code until I had been with Optus for 6 months or spent $100.

@Dacs: what a waste of time… not sure how they got me one…

Try a few chat support staff. Some of them will unlock it with no question asked. Optus management is very chaotic.

      • On Twitter, ACMA had a “Media Alert”
to announce Optus had paid ~Half a
Million (peanuts for a big corporation)
fine for “spamming” w/ link to details

    • A few DIY solutions that may or may not work - search "unlock E5577" on google

    • Got one today in VIC, a bit painful to unlock. 4th person I spoke to on online chat did it for me.

Also managed to get an unlock code for it via online chat (also took about 4 tries).

Don't waste your time with the other online solutions that involve opening the device up and trying to flash new software using 'boot pins'. Tried this, the boot pin locations have changed and even when correctly booted, it doesn't work as they have updated the software version to a type that no one seems to be able to modify.

        • They kept giving me their Optus unlock link that said the device was already unlocked. What was your experience like?

  • the battery on these are really inadequate. half a day max before you need to re-charge. wished it works without battery in it, then you could most prob hook it up to a portable power bank and let it run the whole day without overcharging the battery

    • +1

I often just do that with a power bank, no issues so far.

      • We do same w/ an older USB speaker set
It has fairly clear audio for YT vid’s & TED-
talks, Powerbank can idle ~all night or
power the speakers for almost a full bus.
        day.

        (Speakers have No batteries.)

    • +5

you can't overcharge the battery, it will automatically shut off when charged

Went to my local Coles 3 weeks in a row, no stock yet they keep advertising this at the gift card section. Just stupid

  • Does it come with any data or that is extra ?

    • -1

      Yes

    • Also want to know what the data sim is here

    • I'm guessing not. Because the $99 one that people mentioned above is the one that comes with 50G of data I think.

    • +1

Yep, comes with 4gb of data with 28 days expiry.

Has anyone tried the Unlock methods mentioned in this forum?

    https://forum.xda-developers.com/general/rooting-roms/unlock…

  • I’ve heard they come unlocked. But I’m
With Optus anyway so can’t confirm that

    • I can confirm its locked

  • y do people use these? just if u dont have cable wired to your house?
can it work with all the tvs and comps in your house like regular wife. or u gota carry it around so its close to whatever your using?

    • I used to use this as a hotspot for when I was on the train etc.
Now I just hotspot from my phone as I've got enough data to.

  • Can the newer firmware be unlocked with the methods shown on the how to videos / forums.

I ask because some of the methods were posted over two and half years ago.

    • Just keep trying Optus to unlock it. They cave eventually

  • the 50 gigs version is also 14.95

    • You mean it comes with 50gb usable for a month?

      .

    • The 50 GB Version has a different Barcode and scans for $99

How did you get it for $14.95? Did you buy two and they scanned the $14.95 Box (without the 50GB sticker) twice

      • There was only one in stock. It was scanned at 14.95

  • Anyone found these available in Brisbane?

    • Got one from Coles Greenslopes. It took a while for the lady to find one. Not sure if there are any more.

  • Got one today in.Parramatta coles.

  • No unlock code from Optus online even after one week

    https://secure-unlock.com.au/

Got the following message "This mobile device is not a locked Optus prepaid mobile device"

    • I'm getting the same message, though on chat the agent confirmed from my IMEI that it was locked.

      • what happen now? i thought of getting this ASAP…
