missing the option for none of the above

    • +18

I believe that's the "no vote" option

      • +23

I want to be validated for my contribution. not voting would mean i'm not contributing to the community

    • OP clearly states "from the below stores"
      Best of that lot.

If you think they're all jusat as bad, don't vote.

  • +2

This is a very subjective discussion as it depends on what your own personal preference is in a chip. A recent article covered this topic and used the parameters of crunchy/crispiness to graph out the best chips in Queensland.

Overall, The Yiros Shop won, and KFC came last given the parameters. I'll see if I can dig up that article.

    • +1

Subjectivity is the purpose of all polls, is it not?
The preface of ‘in your opinion’ is implied in the question.

      • +3

I love Ozb polls and opinions. Can't go wrong with doing the exact opposite of the majority

  • +30

Kfc when theyre fresh, cooked properly and have lots of salt. However 2 minutes out of the fryer and they go to the bottom of the list

    • +25

KFC chips have the most variability depending on how they are cooked and seasoned.

      • +3

Plus putting them into a cardboard box makes them go soggy very quickly. McDonalds have the right level of crispiness, but have poor flavouring.

Honestly, there's a fish and chip shop down the road from me who do better chips than any of the majors; one day I was waiting for my order when I noticed a stack of empty Edgell boxes in the corner. So, better chips than any of the majors can be purchased from pretty much any national wholesaler by any restaurant. That says it all.

      • +2

I think a lot depends on the franchise. I haven't had any good chips from our closest 2 KFC stores for about 20 years.

My local Hungry Jacks does very good chips nearly every time since the change to thick cut chips.

    • -1

      when theyre fresh…

I thought they were all pre-cut by machine, bagged and frozen somewhere in a big factory….

On another point I used to work with someone who had chips at least 5 times a week arguing that because he had them at different venues they were all different types of chips thus concluding they were not the same meal… I've pondered over that theory many times!

  • KFC chips with loaded amount of chicken salt is a must, otherwise bit bland.

    • kfc comes with chicken salt already but u have to ask for more to be put on, u have to specifically ask for chicken salt to be used when ordering, or they dont have chicken salt but that would be your dream chip?
      which is true?

      • +1

On their app you can select extra salt but also can do over the counter. If you don't want no salt in your chips they normally cook up a fresh batch. It's the best out the fast food chains in Australia imo. KFC chips overseas taste awful compared to us as they use normal salt. Seriously nothing beats KFC chicken salt

Kingsley's Chicken is better than all those

    • +1

      Awesome chips!

    • +1

I miss Kingsley's after moving away from Canberra. I went back recently and tried them again and they didn't disappoint

    • most charcoal chicken places do better chips than the above lot

  • +7

KFC are good when done right. Unfortunately they aren't done right very often at my local. Nandos chips are always good. Maybe it's cause they have so few customers they can cook them to order? That's my experience anyway.

    • I haven't had the pleasure of seeing KFC do anything right here. Long queue wait times in Sydney CBD (both George Street and Haymarket branches), really greasy awful cooked food unfortunately. Nandos definitely consistent as is El Jannah with plenty chicken salt.

    • +1

the tip for Mickey Dees it to ask for freshly cooked - others suggested ask for no salt which is supposed to 'force' them to cook a fresh batch, but I don't like to annoying people by lying (and then be seen to add salt)

the difference between steaming hot golden fresh and crispy - and sat in the pan for 10 minutes lukewarm, stale and cardboard limp - I think is worth the wait of a few minutes

the other day we walked around Australia Square (the tall circular office building in George St Sydney) basement food court at 11am on a weekday - all the food stalls had full displays of beautiful fresh yet untouched full platters of food on display looking fabulous and enticing - and there were mostly no customers yet from the office building above

and I thought - lunchtime rush is not till 12 - and this food is ready by 11 - it's gonna sit in the bain-maries keep-warm platters for over an hour - up to 3 hours - is that gonna taste as good as fresh from the stove ?

      I think nuh-uh.

But hey I don’t know how many of you here enjoy 20 min delayed backpack food delivery meals – if so keep doing what makes you happy …

Wheres the Red Lea (Cabramatta) option?

    • Agreed, are they still open? i heard rumours they closed…

      • Yes, they're still open. A lot of other Red Lea stores have closed though.

  • +11

Local fish and chip shop, hands down

    • Which one?

My local one has such greasy chips. Even crumbed fish is so oily. They then put it all in a foam container on top of a square piece of paper so you can admire the oil-heavy paper at the end of your meal. Went twice only.

      • Very good question. It’s one of like 10 of my locals. I recommend trying another nearby that might not be your closest. It’s an old local of mine and I now travel for it.

      • Sharks tail Fish and chips in Sunshine North (VIC) does pretty good chips, not to mention very low prices. Also has a separate fryer to do gluten free batter for the coeliacs among us

      • Colyton Seafood & Takeaway is always good. Their chips were wrapped in double sheets of butcher paper, with a vent hole torn just right apparently, because we waited until we got home (10 minutes) to dive in. They were still crisp and the inside perfectly fluffy. My heart sang. And for beautiful-chip-gluttons, they serve old-school portions. Haven't weighed them, a regular was close to a half kilo, I'd bet.

      Nando's.

It hurts to agree with H&D sometimes… :-)

  • +5

    Nandos

  • mgm grand

    • Agreed! Never goes soggy.

  • +5

Out of those options Red Rooster by far. But really it's Nando's, they also have the best burgers I've ever had.

  • +22

none of those, 100% it is Schnitz

    • +3

Absolutely agree, Schnitz chips are the best, right about of crunch, nice flavour, still fluffy inside, almost never soggy.

I don't mind KFC either but sometimes they are just soggy :/

  • +4

I think HJs has become consistently good now, where as they were very up and down/mostly shit. Macca's are hit and miss, but are fries rather than chips, how hard is it to make sure they are cooked properly/through ffs. Never had a bad lot from Rooster. But on a perfect day from all I'm going KFC.

    • I know I repeat myself, but the Minchinbury store is so consistently great on the fryer. Since they changed their chip recipe, every batch I've received has been delicious. Their onion rings, with the new recipe, are always perfect for my taste, too. Crunchy, not greasy, just wonderful. The training on the fryer station must be really good.

    No Grill'd?

    • Easily the best ones.

    • +1

      Grill'd hands down

      • Yes, definitely Grill'd. Best ever.

  • +2

Imo KFC chips have dropped away significantly
    Too regularly are they soggy
Used to be the premium chip option

Agree with above posts on HJs chips being good (almost like a classic kfc chip) and
HUGE fan of schnitz chips. Grilld also rate, salsas for something different

    • +1

used to be a big fan of kfc chips - but now opporto has beat them to be number 1, especially with extra chicken salt.

  • The poll doesn't include any "Local Fish and chip shops Just the fast foodies. I would always seek out a dedicated fish and chip provider over a fast food joint, But thats my thing. Out of the poll candidates I've rarely eaten their chips so can't decide which soggy 1/2 cooked chips were best years ago

  • Guzman y gomez

my local fish and chips place

    Salsas under rated af

    • +1

      We have a winner.

  • Jesters. Hands down.

  • +1

KFC have best everything, nothing triumphs the ol' Zinger Box

  • Smiths Salt and Vinegar.

  • I'm partial to Burger Project's without salt.

  • It is so hard to get good KFC chips, very much luck of the draw.

The best chips I have ever had were at the Grill'd at Tweed City a few years ago. No other Grill'd or other chips have ever come close to this, and it just must have been a random good day.

So I guess I am voting Grill'd, because they beat the others even if they are not as good as that magical experience at Tweed Heads LOL!!

  • +12

    Schnitz!

    • +1

They almost don't count as chips they are so tasty!

    • by far, any day of the week.

I don't eat out due to the Carona Virus

o no has australia contracted a new virus from our love of eating chips?

  • Out of those listed "Hungry Jacks" only since they went to the new chip.

But none compare to the local "Double Cooked" Chippy.

    • +2

But none compare to the local "Double Cooked" Chippy.

I worked at a takeaway stand on AFL games when younger (was awesome pay, good gig) and I double-cooked for the quality and to save time. Staff would be scoffing them down they were so good! Go to other stands and they'd be over or under cooked.

1 of those 'skills' you get good at and can be proud about lol it's the lil things

      • +1

Add an option for Spackbace's chips

      • We thank you for your service. Not a joke! I thank cooks personally whenever I can after being served something that tasted amazing.

        • What's double cooked mean

          • +1

@capslock janitor: Folks who make their own chips from scratch use a double-cooked method.
Boil your chips for 5-10 minutes in water,
then let them cool down for an hour or so,
then fry the first time in hot oil for the inside to get yummy,
then drain them and let them air-dry out a bit,
then fry a second time in hotter oil to get the outside crispy.

  • Damn Carona virus.

    • +3

Ooh, my little pretty one, my pretty one
When you gonna give me some time, Carona
Ooh, you make my motor run, my motor run
Got it coming off o' the line, Carona

Never gonna stop, give it up, such a dirty mind
I always get it up, for the touch of the younger kind
      My, my, my, aye-aye, whoa!
      M-m-m-my Carona

  • Best chip for me is Ribs & Burgers, and it's not close.

  • +2

Prefer crispy, crunchy chips but I find mushy KFC ones still tasty. Possibly due to chicken salt?

  • Maccas never disappoint but never excel. Surprised Oporto is so slow. Guessing it’s because of lower store numbers.

  • +1

    i have a thing for curly fries…

Also where is Nandos? (in the poll)

  • Oportos chips always taste like they only spent 3 seconds in the fryer.

  • kfc
