Uber Eats Terrible Customer Service

Over the years I have experienced below average customer service from Uber and this experience just tops it off.

We hardly ever order Uber Eats but as we had all had a few drinks we placed an order for our favourite restaurant, in our suburb. I noticed that the delivery fee was quite high at $6.99 especially as it is about a 5 minute drive at the most. Their response was "The delivery fee you pay will vary depending on the restaurant's distance from your delivery address and the restaurant's average cost of orders." So as I mentioned our house is very close to the restaurant so it must be due to the average cost of orders which sounds dodgy to me. It should always be based off location and maybe time of order like they do on Uber.

The conversation went back and forth for a while but still didn't make sense. Their final response was "We understand that you noticed this change on delivery fee within your area. While this means that the delivery fee you pay to order from certain restaurants has increased, it may be cheaper to order from some restaurants that are more closer to you". There aren't any closer to me but there is one further away (2 suburbs over) that is $3.99 for delivery fee. So I asked them how does that work? But they refused to answer me and literally closed the ticket every time I re-opened it and made a comment.

It's not the actual cost that annoys me but their responses that don't make sense and then just ignoring me altogether.

So now Uber is my last option for drives or food delivery.

Who else has experienced a similar issue with their support?

    • You got that out of my post??? 😂

  • There's a service and an associated price. Uber is not obliged to give you an explaination just because you thought the price is not right. If you don't like the price, don't use their service. Nobody is forcing you to do so.

  • I have my popcorn ready

    Love reading about people stupids

So many stupid going around lately

    • +1

      need more popcorn specials

    • Yep I was your comment above about a 5 minute walk when I clearly said a 5 minute drive which is TOTALLY different you idiot 😂😂😂

  • I'm not sure what the issues with the Uber's customer service but the last few times I complained to Uber, I was able to win my cases with only one message sent to them via the app each time.

However, that wasn't for UberEats though. I never had any issues with UberEats. If I see an expensive delivery fee, I just vote with my money and use other apps like Menulog etc.

  • It's not the actual cost that annoys me but their responses that don't make sense and then just ignoring me altogether.

It sounds like it totally is bothering you. $6.99 for 3.6km sounds reasonable. If you don't like it, don't buy it. Nobody is forcing you to order food from UberEats if you think they are ripping you off. I'm sure if the price is adjusted based on distance, how many drivers available and how busy the restaurant is. They might not explain it well enough to you but that doesn't mean they have to.

Don't like it? Don't buy it and move on. The time you spent complaining and posting here surely is worth more than $6.99.

    I have noticed this too.
My theory is that the prices are chosen by the vendors/restaurants - and perhaps they have some sort of hosting subscription model. So if you don't want to pay too much to be available, then the delivery fee is higher, thus causing less people to by from. Whilst restaurants that have lower delivery fees are paying more for uber eats services.
Just a theory - but if anyone knows if this is true, let me know.

On my uber eats i have a range: free, $2.99, $3.99, $4.99, $5.99, $6.99. These days i only ever order from the free section or on occasion a $2.99 or $3.99 option.
Why would i pay for thai food from a place that charges $7 for delivery, vs a place that charges $3 delivery.

  • Did you ask to speak with the manager Karen?

  • +4

You were ok with 3.99 not 5.99? You’re pissing money away on takeaway and your complaining about $3? Unreal.

    • +1

      $2 actually

    • That was never it but if it was wouldn’t this be the right forum to raise it!

Gotta love thriftybunny’s maths though haha I understand why most didn’t understand my post now.

I think you have gone too far for a mere $7. First with customer rep and then the netizens…

I jumped into the thread only to find its a delivery fee dispute which you’d knowingly accepted when you placed order…

How do you expect the drivers make their cut? Think of the total time it takes for the driver for your order… 5 minutes for pickup, 5 minutes travel, another few minutes handing over the food to you. Assuming all that fee goes into the driver (which is NOT), thats about $6 for 12-15 minutes and hourly may be $30? (best case assuming everything)

Why are you using a service you don't like ?

  • +2

    Don't use their service.

So, let me get this right. OP had the companies policy explained to them. OP disagreed with a company's policy. OP then harassed a customer service rep over a wire carriage?(Did you just admit to a crime under commonwealth criminal code?? irelevant) OP then was upset that a company they don't own has policies in place without first consulting OP and then not changing their policies to be cheaper for OP?
Why do any business set their prices??? to make money you muppet.

  • +1

OP, given the distance, I think the price you paid for the delivery is acceptable. Usually anything within a 1-2km radius is $4.95 (For me anyways), which likely fluctuates around peak times.

Customer Support won't do anything as technically you accepted the fee when you purchased your meal, you agreed to the fee.

Move onto something more pressing in your life OP

If you are going to get Uber eats, surely you know there will be delivery fee. Just shut it and pay up. You dont pay for the cost of travel, you pay for the convenience of food delivered.

  • +7

Lol. OP's responses in this thread reminds me of the saying "if everyone around you seems like an ahole, then you're the ahole".

    • No just a bunch of dummies can't read and think OP was complaining about the delivery fee. OP is actually asking why an order from the same restaurant that is further away costs less.

      • +3

Oh .. so I see that saying applies to you too

        • Posted with zero sense of irony… well done.

You and most others here just prove that you have terrible reading and comprehension skills, arguing with OP about something they never actually said.

    • Haha thanks for the laugh. Yes I’m an ahole when people don’t read the post and understand it, then say stupid things like you did.

Common sense and logic do not apply on this website, I do keep forgetting that but thankfully we have some that get it like lunchbox99

Get your own food by going there. This is a waste of space.

I share my story ordering off uber eats. I placed an order about 2 weeks ago and noticed that the food was taking longer than usual ~70 minutes for a simple pizza, pasta and drink I was quoted about 40 mins max. I called up the restaurant to see what was happening and they said the driver was no where to be seen and not picking up his phone so for my best interest give uber a call.

So I stupidly rated the driver a thumbs down and wrote to uber about being unacceptable for a driver to accept a job to be this late. 20 minutes later so about ~90 minutes total I get the uber driver banging on my door furiously talking about 30 plus hard knocks. Didn't even bother to open as I feared he must've got a call or something from uber and waited till he left.

I came out to get my food after he was gone and yes the food was barely warm at this point but whatever leave the food on the table. Notice the bloody driver parked across the road again 15 minutes after dropping my food looking around for cameras??? I was not sure so I ran to get my phone came back to him gone. I go outside after he's gone and this (profanity) keyed my car. That's right he (profanity) keyed my car (profanity).

I reported to uber saying who the guy was but they didn't offer me due to their privacy policy but they'll redirect it to another department that process this kind of response? I reported to the police saying they can't do anything without proof and details about the person. Talking to the restaurant to see if they're willing to help me out so in the process I should follow them up.

BECAUSE I saw that the driver was in a yellow mistubishi and not the registered car they used to sign up with uber. Uber was not able to help me further unless I have a police report.

In the end I learnt a few valuable lessons. I learnt how to buff out a scratch for the first time with polish. I learnt to not use a delivery service if its so easy for people to find out where you live and finally I should focus more on my health and begin my journey meal cooking.

    • +1

nice one! and of course another lesson not to leave any negative feedback for (random) people that know your address.
I personally have never had food delivered and never will for many reasons, including the fact that I don't trust said 'random' to handle my food. They have little vested interest in applying some duty of care. Not even going to talk about the lazy culture. Yeah I know, people are time poor blah blah.

  • I think there's a good chance anyone delivering your food will give you something in addition to food.

Probably not coronavirus because Chinese aren't that desperate to deliver food in their Model X's.

  • Hey so I live near the post office how come people don’t get a discount when they are sending me stuff? Just wondering if you can hit up Australia Post for an explanation?

  • On an unrelated note, I notice one restaurant had different prices on ubereats app for their food vs what they advertise online if you were to pick up. Is this a common practice?

    • Absolutely

Every place jacks the prices on Uber Eats, as UE takes a hit from the overall purchase price

      • I see. Makes sense. Always wondered how they made money from $5 delivery fees. Would prefer they just increase the delivery fees so every cost is transparent but I guess can't complain if you make the decision to order through them.

        • It's probably how they can offer free delivery offers, or the free delivery when combined with someone else's order. They're still getting their cut ;)

  • +1

OP's original question is not unreasonable. They just want clarification of how Uber eats bills. I would have the same query if my local charged more for delivery than a few suburbs over. OP was questioning uber eats, not the restaurant (the way I read it). The information he recieved was contradictory.

Everyone on the 'shutupandpay' bandwagon needs to hand in their ozbargain badge.

Be helpful and answer the query. Move on if you cannot do it in a polite and meaningful way.

    • Everyone on the 'shutupandpay' bandwagon needs to hand in their ozbargain badge.

By paying to get overpriced food delivered, without a free delivery coupon etc?

      Yeah try again.

So sick of people throwing that around.

      • +1

        Can you elaborate a bit?

When I read through the comments it seems that many people are unecessarily commenting about paying or move on. While they may feel the comment is worthwhile, it doesn't address the post.

        • +2

the op wants an apology for uber eats not explaining their pricing policy in detail. Uber eats is never going to do that… No business will. The low level csr you encounter on email will only have access to scripts they aren't allowed to say anything more than the information provided to them. OP got and answer didnt like and kept asking the question over and over again expecting a different outcome. Now he want an apology as well

        • You hit the nail on the head.

    • There is a difference between going for a bargain and just being pathetic.

  • -1

What a miserable, and grumpy (and no doubt old) individual the OP is , wasting some poor customer service person's time who has nothing to do with the pricing with a whinge. My advice is to get a hobby! This is a bargain website not a place to whinge hoping strangers will take pity and engage.

    • +1

Not old but definitely not as young as you must be. I was curious as to why it was cheaper for a restaurant that is further away, which is clearly involving money. Definitely don’t want anyone’s pity but I do hope for decent customer service. The problem with young adolescents like yourself is that it’s a rarity nowadays.
