Answering a lot of people in more detail:

    I am immunocompromised.

    I buy masks every year.
    1. For me to wear if I get sick with something to protect others.
    2. To wear if I am around others who are sick with something.
    3. And to ask others who are sick with something to wear around me - but this is disturbingly difficult - so i usually resort to 2.

I usually buy them in summer - now - before flu season here.

But I have been caught by surprise this year with ncov19 and my supply is very low.
But I don't just need them for coronavirus.

I do also regularly hand sanitise, hand wash, and have trained myself to avoiding touching my face pretty well.
That is not adequate when I have to sit in a medical waiting room, or ride public transport with ignorant and/or inconsiderate people who are coughing and sneezing.

I am staying home as much as possible over the next few weeks - missing out on things.
I don't think I can explain what it is like to feel afraid to leave your house because somewhere out there might be an a$$***** who knows they might be infected but believes themselves to be too busy and important to self isolate: believe me, they exist with the flu, there will be someone with this too.

    • +18

Everytime I watch one of those “soldier on” Cold and flu BS ads I think of all the people the idiots who do this are infecting. If you are sick stay home and don’t spread your diseases. It is like the numpty anti-vaxxers. Herd immunity is what provides protection to compromised people, and very young children, who can’t be vaccinated. If people are ill they should call in sick or work remotely. However, there is also the problem of people being infectious before they realise he is sick. Best of health to you.

My sympathies at your situation. I can understand how the current situation would be making your condition even more difficult.

Given what you're going through, I would hope that you've already got a existing relationship with a pharmacy and pharmacist who have some understanding of your needs.

My suggestion would be to pursue that path in the first instance. Ask to speak to the manager or pharmacist on duty, explain that you normally keep the masks on hand at home & why, and seek their assistance in procuring what you need. If you're lucky, they will indeed have a stash in the back for people in your situation, otherwise I would hope they'd put some aside in their next delivery.

      • @bobbieb thanks
        i will try your suggestion

      • @bobbieb i am supposedly on a reserve list but they never call. i don't think they can get any. eta was a few weeks and then changed to who knows.

    • +1

Call ahead and advise your medical providers that you require to wait in isolation. That is something they can do given you have a legitimate, on record requirement for it. The limit in most clinical settings is doctors, not rooms to put people in.

      • @cfuse

thanks that's also a good suggestion

  • Try rsea.com.au.

    • out
also out of refills for elastomeric

    • +2

5 pieces for $100+ after delivery? My goodness.

      • +1

thanks but as hamlet said too expensive

  • just google p2 masks, you can even get them from catch.com.au or kogan.

bunnings should have plenty of stock.

    • +2

Bunnings doesn't have plenty of stock in fact we sell out as soon as we get them in but if you are going to check your local Bunnings, make sure you look in the paint department as well as in the power garden aisles and the toolshop.

      • thank you

      • +1

Funny because when we first ran out of masks at the start of this epidemic we told people to go to Bunnings because you guys would have much more stock than we do.

Until people started coming back saying you guys were out too…

        • @CMH LOL

          • +1

@bargain huntress: Funny thing was that the Bunnings was also sending people our way lol. Which was how we found out come to think of it.

They'll come in and go "oh, Bunnings just sent us here, they're out too!"

    • +1

Bunnings has no stock. I check three Bunnings stores as part of my travels and they've been out for over two weeks. The only masks you can get are respirators for $80 for spraying crops.

    • @mr valuepack

      bunnings out

kogan out except for too expensive
      catch none

No need to wear masks in Australia to protect from viruses. We are not a developing country, we have a modern medical system that will take care if you. It’s summer here so less chance of spreading / catching viruses. Deaths from viruses mainly occur in winter, in the old or young or those with serious underlying health issue in developing countries. Masks make you look silly because they are pretty much useless. Unless you are knowingly exposing yourself to viruses (ie health care workers) or damaging Microparticles then it’s just pointless and wearing one suggests you don’t understand what’s going on. There are millions of viruses and our bodies (as long as we are healthy) are very good at keeping us well. Wearing masks unnecessarily could actually have the reverse affect of lowering our natural immunity to viruses and make us sicker. Take a chill pill and ignore all the fear mongering by the media. You don’t need a mask in Australia for the virus that is hardly here and was brought from outside. There is no pandemic here in Australia for this new or any other virus I am aware of.

    • +1

I see that you state you are immunocompromised so you classify as having pre existing health conditions so I understand why you would want to wear a mask. Everyone else is just crazy and I feel sorry for you that you can’t purchase masks when you need them and others don’t.

      • +2

        @snooksy thanks :)
i don't think that everyone is crazy
some people might be like me
other people might be prepping in case it gets into the wild in australia - we won't know if we're safe for another week or so at least
and some people might just be scared - but every household should have some masks for flu season anyway - if it was common for people here to wear masks when they were ill with respiratory infections my life - and a lot of other peoples - would be a lot easier.

        • -1

Trust me you are safe and are acting crazy. It’s not a threat here in Australia. Once the media moves on, everyone will pretty much forget about it.

    • +1

If you stock up on essentials and end up with a pile of masks you don't need in 6 months, so what? If you need those things however, you'll be very glad you planned ahead.

    • +1

Ncov 2019 killed a healthy 25 year old. It doesn't only target weak immune systems. A virus that's mutated and isn't well known by medical practitioners is not something you want to teach your body to cure.

      • Did he smoke? Healthy is related to your environment and your health system. Also don’t believe everything you read. I’ve been trying to find detailed statistics on those who have died so far and I can’t find it. If anyone can provide me with the breakdown of deaths with ages, smoking, sexes, other underlying health issues that would be good.

  • -1

This remind me of a conversation I had with my co-worker who insisted on wearing mask coming to work, I inform them that the likelihood of fatality while crossing the street (about 12-14 a month) was about the same as them having coronavirus (15), keeping in mind that one was FATAL while the other has no death or even human to human infection in Australia so far, yet they have no issue with jaywalking across a city street.

Having say that, if you still want to throw your money away, or have a genuine need for them and you are in Victoria, there is a Nail & Beauty Supply warehouse on 5/294-296 Ballarat Rd that was selling 50 "Doctor Mask" for $12 about a week ago.

    • +1

Yeah it’s funny. I saw a guy driving in his car on a freeway by himself wearing a surgical mask. I’m like what the hell is that for? The NCP stays active in the air for about 2m around the person. It can live on the right surfaces though for about 24 hours if the temperature and humidity is right. Unless he was carrying some infected people very recently in his car he just looks really stupid.

      • +1

It can also infect through unprotected eyes. So he better have been wearing goggles too.

It is ridiculous people using masks right now when there is no reported people to people transmission.

      • +1

maybe he was infected with something and was about to pick up a passenger

  • +1

Masks are made in China just like everything else, please wake up the shortages are caused by China closing its factories but in the next few weeks they will have refilled all the back orders

    • The surgical masks I have seen are made in the Australia, the US and Japan.

At least those that are supplied to the GPs and surgeries.

Not sure about the stuff people are buying retail in Bunnings or Chemist warehouse etc though.

      • 100m people using masks every day. I doubt they are producing at those numbers.

        • Tbeir maximum production output is 20 million a day. So you are correct.

  • -1

Going on a cruise next week and stocked up on some P2s, packs of surgicals and some hand sanitizer. Was at a pharmacy in Westfield chermside. Even dodged the Chinese tour group who were walking by. 🚢

    • +2

It is not a good idea to get on cruise now. Three cruise have been detained.

      • Yeah. If I had a China/HK/Macau passport I could get my money back. Wondering what other angle I could use tbh.

        • +3

Even if you can't get the money back, I will forfeit the money and make sure zero chance to get stuck on 5he ship with the virus.

        • There is Aussies on cruises with the virus. You might be infected by reputation.

    • do you at least have a balcony cabin?

  • +2

Stop this ridiculous fearmongering. You do not need masks for everyday life.

    • +5

OP has a compromised immune system

    • A lot of people are wearing a mask of panic right now.

  • +3

People wearing masks when the virus can infect you from any mucus membrane Eg. Your eyes. They constantly touch and adjust masks without proper hand washing… What's the point?

You don't need a p2 for a virus, you just need something that will block someones spit. The viruses don't fly like smoke does

    • It is for comfort. Masks are the new adult pacifier.

    • they have to be used correctly

people are not educated in their use

    • +1

They constantly touch and adjust masks without proper hand washing…

Most people don't even fit them properly either. 90% of the people I see on TV wearing masks don't have them sealed around their nose. No point whatsoever.

  • +2

I'm perplexed by some of the inane comments directed at OP. Oh well. Here you go OP. https://www.officeworks.com.au/shop/officeworks/c/facilities…

Bought a couple of P2 rated masks from them when the smoke drifted into Melbourne.

    • thank you

    • they say they are in stock but they wont ship to my address and are not in-store in any of my locals

  • +1

As someone who needed a mask for cutting bricks on the weekend, it's immensely frustrating to call store after store looking for one mask because people are panicking over 15 cases in a population of 24,000,000.

    • +2

That's what happens in a pandemic.

I imagine some people are equally frustrated that their ability to source a potentially virus-averting face mask for at risk family has been compromised by anyone who just wanted one to cut up bricks…

      • +1

The masks at Bunnings are all marketed as for trades people. Working in dusty dangerous environments. They're an essential piece of safety equipment for many.

Now we have people clearing out the shelves to resell masks for 5x the price on eBay.

I'm not sure how you would like it if an essential piece of safety equipment was bought out by profiteers.

      • It isn't a pandemic, at least not in Australia or did you mean to type pandemonium? It is an utter joke perfectly healthy people walking around in masks.

Since the country is so cashed up I am surprised if some home refinancing goes through and we're all walking around in Merc branded hazmat suits.

      • potentially virus-averting face mask for at risk family has been compromised by anyone who just wanted one to cut up bricks

Probability of catching coronavirus in Australia: approx 1 in 1 million

Probability of lung damage if cutting stone/brick/asbestos/etc without masks: almost certain

The tradies are far more in need. Silicosis is a terrible disease.

    • @cluster i would recommend you upgrade to a half face elastomeric respirator anyway.

3m is a good brand and mine has served me well for years for many projects.

get one in a bucket kit or also get a storage container for it.

if you wear eye protection for your work consider a full face 3m if you can afford it.

versus disposables there is some maintenance cleaning but it will save you money in the long term with regular use and offers better protection.

supplies are low atm from the fires i assume but more available than the disposables because people have not realised you can probably use them for viruses as well.

  • I bought some P2 masks yesterday at Prahran Amcal Pharmacy, and they were only $10 each…good to see not everyone has price jacked them.
They still had a few left….

    • $10 a mask is a price jack mate

  • Plenty of P2/N95 mask available on eBay. Just be prepared to pay approx $10-15 each for them.

  • What about full face mask like this: https://www.amazon.com.au/Dr%C3%A4ger-X-plore-5500-Respirato…

Will it protect you from virus 100%?

    • hypothetically if you used it with the correct techniques

also i would recommend a better known brand like 3m

  • +1

"Also please make a comment if you think/know they meet Australian standards"

Smells like daigou. Throw in some Australian made baby formula and vitamins and you're making bank.

    • +1

Yeah that was a really weird comment to make. Like, why Australia standards in particular? Why not CDC, or any other organisation.

      • Australian standards to pacify Australian levels of panic.

      • any standard would be fine.

  • -1

Masks just protect others if you already have the virus

    • it depends on the mask

but that is their most important function

  • -2

hey the demand for masks will only grow…since the nationals and australian liberal party climate policy has allowed heavy industry to increase emissions by nearly a third

'The increases were signed off despite the safeguard mechanisms promised to limit emissions from big polluters to ensure they do not just cancel out cuts paid for by taxpayers through the Coalitions main climate policy, the emissions reduction fund.

Under the scheme, every industrial facility across the country that emits more than 100,000 tonnes a year was set a pollution limit, known as a baseline, based on either its historic emissions or an independent forecast of future emissions.

Under changes being introduced this year, all facilities will be moved to limits based not on their total emissions, but on how much they expect to emit per unit of production.

The Australian Conservation Foundation found increases approved over the past two years alone allowed more than 7m tonnes of potential extra emissions each year.. about 1.3% of annual national carbon pollution.

The increases allowed under Thursdays changes, including those from a new Jemena gas pipeline between Tennant Creek and Mount Isa, are at least 236,658 tonnes a year.

Bret Harper, director of research with energy and carbon consultants RepuTex, said it showed the safeguard mechanism was a pretty ineffective policy.

The bottom line is there is no accountability for any emissions increases that do occur, he said.' 8th Feb 2020

Part of scummo's review no doubt. There's no smoke without fire, and hellfire's good business..

  • -4

Most masks are made in China…think about that for a sec.

    • How long do you think coronavirus survives outside of the body?

  • +1

I have some P2V masks will they work for teh Woohan?

    • +3

      P2V masks?

      You mean condoms?

      • +3

        You're a man of culture and a scholar :3

  • +1

Lucky I bought a box of 10 for ~$18 a month ago for bushfire smoke purposes, and to finally replace the one I'd used for ages when throwing around garden soil or sawdust.

  • +4

So i use to work in a lab with the potential of receiving ebola virus samples and in place were strict protocols in regards to proper personal protective equipment. Not saying that 2019 nCoV is as contagious or as deadly as ebola but how do you propose on using the mask? how often will it be replaced? in what order will you remove the mask? what happens if you touch the mask? will you use disposable gloves? when and where will you use it? when do you consider the mask as being soiled? there are so many other factors that should be considered other that simply donning a mask and considering it a done deal.

    • It is the mask bubble of 2020. People just don't care. Being able to get a mask is the bargain.

    • correct.
      all important questions

      interested in your expertise

sanitising hands before and after touching is essential obviously

  • +1

I’ll give you a serious reply. Best options are to call hardware stores that don’t have an online store (so not bunnings) and also try workwear stores.

  • +2

Buy supplements to boost your immune system instead, more effective than a face mask and is not out of stock at the moment.

    • there is a little evidence of this. i do take some.

      what would you recommend?

  • +1

What about kids sized p2 masks
Anybody know if these exist ?

    • +1

There are kid sized n95 masks at Miniso but they get snapped up very quickly so you might need to keep checking their website or ask staff

  • don't forget about your goggles.

no you do not need a facemask if you are in australia literally the next closest person is going to be like 50m away from you, not like 5cm like in china.

i skidded off a dirt road and it was 30 mins before the next car came. you're safe. corona virus isn't going to catch up to you.

leave the masks for the tradies who actually need to use them and the medicos.

    • +2

      "don't forget about your goggle"

I can't wait until hardware stores are all sold out of goggles too. Stuff the people who need eye protection when cutting bricks, wood, tiles, metal, etc. There is money to be made!

"if you are in australia literally the next closest person is going to be like 50m away from you"

I assume you have never been on a plane, bus, train, tram, waiting in line for something, at a sports event, concert, cinema, etc.

      • After goggles eye patches are next. At least with one eye you only get half the dose of a lethal virus.

        • Or 50/50 chance which eye cops the spit.

      • swimming goggles are an option and create a better seal than eyeshields
